Single, Catholic, and possibly pregnant (older readers only - need advice)

I agree that it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant. However, having been in vaguely circumstances at abouth the same age, and having the benefit of hindsight, I encourage you to see the baby (if you do happen to be pregnant) as a blessing from God and an opportunity for you to have a closer relationship with God through the sacrifices you will need to make as a single mom. I could never say that it was easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.

Remember Jesus’s words “Go and sin no more.” Nothing you have done removes you from His love. Take courage from this and resolve to be the best mother you can be.

I appreciate your care and advice. <3 I agree with you about Plan B and any contraceptives/ birth control/ abortifacients, whether they are similar or dissimilar to each other (am referring to the last few posts).

About the pains, I should have been more specific. Since ovulating 7 days ago, my breasts have been sore/painful, and I am cramping in front. But I am thinking stress may be causing the cramps… but I cannot explain the breast pain. Normally it goes away 2-3 days after ovulating, but they’re still strong a week later.

I know that, if I am pregnant, it’s going to be about the baby more than anything else. Part of my huge worry is that bf and I have grown apart, and marriage is not an option. He’s not Catholic, and we have some irreconcilable differences… if only marriage were an option, I might feel so much less stressed about this.
It sounds as if you are VERY aware of your cycle! Are you sure you ovulated 7 days ago? How are you tracking this? How long after you ovulate do you normally have your menses? I don’t think breast soreness was one of my early symptoms when I got pregnant…more like just nausea from morning till night. 😛 And the cramping…Not to give you medical advice but you could have a cyst.

Of course pregnancy is possible if semen is present near your vagina, but in terms of probability…it’s not terribly high. I’m not saying it CAN’T happen, but depending upon what exactly happened, it might not be that likely.

Probably time to go see your GYN doctor. I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Therese! First, breathe… 🙂 I know that sounds odd, but SOME of the cramping could be caused from the worry about the possible pregnancy. Our brains have a lot of power over physical symptoms. Since there is nothing you can do about the outcome by worrying, just worry about today…Yes you’re right, ANY form of birth control is against our beliefs, so good for you for standing up for your faith!

I have been in your shoes, but I never told anyone my fears except for the priest I talked to. Most important thing to do is to seek to make a good, genuine Confession as SOON as possible. The sooner you can wipe your soul clean, the better. The graces you will receive from this AWESOME Sacrament will give you the perseverance, poise and peace you will need this next few weeks. Also, the more you can go to Mass during this vulnerable time, the more God will melt your heart and show you that He still cares about you…you’re His child. He knows what you’re feeling…

A friend of mine in her mid-20’s recently shared the news to all of us via Facebook that she is 6 months pregnant. She is single and Catholic. But you know what happened? Instead of people saying, “How immoral!” or “How shameful!”, we all congratulated her and probably 80 people wrote on her wall saying they support her! She was humbled, but we ALL make mistakes in this life! I can’t tell you how many Catholics have made a mistake and gone too far, even though they didn’t get pregnant they still have to carry that burden.

Take this opportunity to rebuild your relationship with God…maybe take a retreat so you can renew your love for Him! Your next relationship with a guy, remember how tempting the passions of the flesh is, so keep up a little more boundaries to keep both of you from sinning…it’s hard! We’re creatures with physical pleasures…but we also have an intellect, unlike other creatures. Next time you’re tempted and things start heating up, just remember this “Don’t do in private what you wouldn’t do in public!” Hahaha or is it “in front of your mother!” lol even better! God bless you, my dear. I will say a prayer for you tonight!

I’d just like to point out that “Plan B” is NOT the abortion pill. They work in completely different ways. Plan B is basically an extra strength birth control pill. It does not interfere with an already existing pregnancy, and is only effective within 5 days of the act. The abortion pill is not over the counter like plan B is, and it is an actual abortion. Generally, it is 2 pills, one administered by your doctor, one taken at home. The first causes the pregnancy to cease to grow, and the other expels the fetus/embryo from your body.

It just bothers me a lot when people confuse the two pills. I have pro life friends that support plan B but not the abortion pill.
Catholic Church does not support use of Plan B

Plan B manufacturer has admitted it can cause the death of an embryo
How does Plan B work (mechanism of action)?
Plan B is believed to act as an emergency contraceptive principally by preventing ovulation or fertilization (by altering tubal transport of sperm and/or ova). In addition, it may inhibit implantation by altering the endometrium. Plan B is not effective if a woman is pregnant. Plan B is a contraceptive and cannot terminate an established pregnancy.
Will Plan B harm an unborn fetus?
There is no evidence that Plan B would harm a pregnant woman or a developing fetus if the product were accidentally taken during early pregnancy…. Plan B is not an abortifacient. It is an emergency contraceptive and should not be confused with RU486 or any other abortifacient.
go2planb.com/section/about/index.html
However, note also that the drug maker admits that Plan B “may inhibit implantation by altering the endometrium *.” In other words, Plan B may cause a newly-conceived embryo to die (and be expelled) because it cannot implant itself in the lining of the womb. For this reason, some South American courts have found the Plan B drug to violate an unborn child’s constitutionally-guaranteed right to life.
In light of the manufacturer’s own admission, its other statements above may at first seem to be flat-out lies. But careful analysis reveals them to be deeply misleading rather than flatly false. Although many people (e.g. the legal philosopher Ronald Dworkin) use the word “fetus” to refer to an unborn child at any stage of development, in medicine a developing human life is usually called an “embryo” rather than a “fetus” prior to implantation in the mother’s womb. The statement that Plan B does not “harm an unborn fetus” is true if we use this technical medical definition of “fetus,” even though it may be misleading for those of us who don’t distinguish fetuses from embryos.
But if Plan B may work post-fertilization, may cause the death of a newly-conceived human embryo, how can the drug maker say that the pill is only a “contraceptive,” is “not effective if a woman is pregnant,” and “is not an abortifacient”? The short answer is that the manufacturer appears to rely on recent (and perhaps politically motivated) redefinitions of conception, pregnancy, and abortion: According to the new definitions, “conception” and “pregnancy” begin at implantation rather than at fertilization, and “abortion” means the termination of a post-implantation “pregnancy.” The drug makers can claim, rightly, that their statements are true under these new definitions.
One large problem is that the lay readers of the drug information packet are not told up front that these special new definitions are being used. Thus this “information” is quite unfair and misleading to average men and women who may remember from high school biology that fertilization and conception meant the same thing and that fertilization marked the beginning of pregnancy.
Moreover, the drug maker’s insistence that Plan B does not terminate a pregnancy is a red herring to begin with. Nobody has any qualms about terminating pregnancies per se. After all, that’s what birth itself does! What pro-life women and men don’t want to do is to have an “abortion” in the ordinary sense of terminating LIFE. When the drug maker tells them not to worry because they are not terminating a pregnancy, they may conclude incorrectly that Plan B cannot cause the death of their unborn child. When they find out too late that they were misled and may have taken the lives of their own children, they may be devastated. And the drug maker, the media, and the FDA will be responsible.
In making this potentially lethal pill more easily available, the FDA should at least have required the drug maker to come clean, to say prominently on its label something like “WARNING: THIS DRUG MAY CAUSE THEÂ DEATH OF AN EMBRYO.” Its users would then be able to exercise informed consent about whether to take a chance on destroying a developing human life.*

I agree that it’s unlikely that you are pregnant, and that you need to see a doctor about the pain, to find out what’s actually going on.

God bless you, sweetheart.

“therese3879”’

If it should happen to be a pregnancy, do not fear your parents. If they are practicing Catholics they may be shocked at first, but will still love you.

Please be aware that there are alternatives such as adoption if that should come to your mind. If it comes to that, it is an unselfish act to do.
Those were my thoughts exactly. Though it may be hard for your parents to hear this news, they should accept the child with loving arms, and help you through.

Please talk to your Priest about this?

Hi therese3879, this is understandably very stressful and I hope it resolves as a case of psychosomatosis - your brain fooling your body into signs of pregnancy.

Given your symptoms, I’d head to your primary doc anyway. You can take an HPT and you should (they’ll give you another one at the office anyway and charge you thrice as much for it), but other posters are correct that other issues may be at play here that could indicate serious health concerns that should be checked out.

Also, you mentioned that the intercourse and ovulation were both recent but that you and your boyfriend have drifted apart. I’m sure that the stress of a possible pregnancy hasn’t helped things and may even be at cause of the drift, but I wonder if this is an indication that either your relationship clearly isn’t ready to become more serious (and hence you two should agree upon farther boundaries in the future) or that you two perhaps aren’t ready to grow any further together as a couple.

The family situation makes me think of my two daughters, who are far too young to worry about getting into a situation like this, and how we ought to raise them so that they will know what we expect of them, what we believe as truth, but also that they can come to us in times of crisis like this.
My deepest fears are because my family is very conservative Catholics, which makes my situation all the more unbearably hard. I find myself feeling lost and hopeless, because my family and even friends have looked to me as a role model for chastity. Because I always was, til weeks ago. So this is just the most humbling and painful experience I could ever imagine right now…
If I drive drunk and smash up my car, I’m not a hypocrite for telling you that you ought not to drink and drive - I’m just a lesson. You can still be that role model, but if you are pregnant you are right that it will scandalize some. Honesty is best in these situations, even if it is difficult. And take things one step at a time - bearing in mind that even with the difficulties of raising a child you still want to go to school and accomplish certain things in your life. All things can be done but you’ll certainly need their help, so honesty is best.
Looking for advice… if you are a parent of somebody my age, how would you recommend that I break the news, if I have to (if I AM pregnant) to my parents?
Just tell us. Let us help you. Give us the opportunity to be disappointed but then to forgive. It’s part of it, we’ll be mad but we’ll deal with it. And let us help you. We’ve been there with pregnancy tests and follow-ups and morning sickness and labor plans and delivery and healing and late night feedings and colic and diaper changes. In my house, and I hope in yours, the sin will be forgiven, the family will grow by one, the nights will be less restful and the days more work, but we accept gratefully the gift of the child and the opportunity to show a forgiving and selfless love to you, our daughter, once again. Pummel the boyfriend a few times perhaps, but …
And how on earth am I going to explain a pregnancy to my friends?
Simply. Maybe over dinner so they can’t run out the door screaming “Sinner!Sinner!Sinner!” Not that they would. Give them the opportunity to be supportive and let them be disappointed but reflect on their own lives as well.
What about at Mass, where it seems like everybody knows me?
Count yourself deeply blessed to have such a tight-knit parish in which to raise your child. Give them the opportunity to become community.

I’d like to IM you, Sapphiregirl, to help me understand this difference that’s often been stated. It may be that we approach the definition of pregnancy distinctly so that one considers it to begin at implantation and the other at fertilization. Rather than continue to take the thread of this very stressed and open person off into a different direction.

Breast tenderness can be from eating too much salt. Did you enjoy chips and popcorn lately? I tend to crave salty things after ovulation and tender breasts result, and it takes a bit of water drinking to get a good flushing out.

Prayers for you.

First, don’t panic. Find out 100% if you ARE pregnant before you go breaking the news to anyone or getting yourself any more worked up!

If you are pregnant, sit them down and just be honest with them. Sometimes going to a member of the family who may be the most accepting of it (and easiest to talk to about it) might help, and then enlist that person to help break the news to your parents. You are an adult and what is done is done (IF you are pregnant). Just from what you described, however, it is highly unlikely that you’re pregnant.

As another poster said, if you are, please know that this baby is a blessing, a miracle from God and congratulations! 😉

Don’t worry about the what-if’s at this point.
I just wanted to send hugs and congratulate you on your strength. 🙂

I am a Catholic Health care worker. PlanB prevents implantation not conception. We Catholics believe that life begins at conception. ergo, if you prevent implantation of a baby ( which is exactly what a “fertilized egg” or a “zygote” is) you are killing the baby. So for us Catholics, it is murder if you poison the baby and it is also murder if you allow the baby to starve to death because he/she has nowhere to be nourished.

I am posting here because I am beside myself with stress right now.

Therese, go to an EPS center ( emergency pregnancy center) (NOT PLANNED PARENTHOOD !!!) and get tested. From what you are saying, chances of you being pregannt are very low.
If you are, then as a previous poster stated, it is time to think of the baby and not yourself. Believe me, your parennts may be very upset and sad at the turn of events but they most likely will stand by you and help you out. There are many otions for you. You can keep the baby, you cam give it up for adoption, but whatever you do, it is the baby’s interests that should come first. You will be in my prayers. Please keep us posted. (feel free to pm me).

Hi, Honey.

I am so sorry you are feeling so scared right now.

I want to tell you something - that very conservative family of yours loves you more than you will ever know. They are faithful Catholics. They will be angry for a minute, disappointed and then they will absolutely wrap you up in love. You will be ashamed, you will cry, you will feel bad (I think, when we commit a sin we are kind of supposed to feel bad) and then you will be surrounded by love.

Go to confession and then talk, with your boyfriend, to your priest. If you are pregnant, then the two of you should be going to your parents together. This may be difficult and it may be scary but it is your cross to bear right now and you both should be carrying it together.

Remember, always, that our Church is not a hotel for saints. It is a hospital for sinners.

If you didn’t have intercourse then it is extremely unlikely that you are pregnant.
I got pregnant the same way. I was still a virgin; I was even examined by a OBGYN to confirm it to my mother. I was about the same age as well. I too, thought it was impossible to get pregnant without intercourse but if the sperm makes its way in, you can fall pregnant.

I would do those pharmacy tests. I only found out because I had a bladder infection, and continued to have pain in my lower abdomen. The doctor felt it necessary to conduct a pregnancy test before giving me higher dose of antibiotics. It was a shock but for some reason I was pleasantly surprised.

Based on what you have written, it is extremely unlikely that you are pregnant. First of all, you would probably not be having symptoms described as “painful” this early on. You need to get to the doctor because you could have an infection or cist, or any number of serious issues if you are in pain. I highly recommend that you do not take a chemical abortion medication and no you are not a hypocrite if you decide to do the right thing after doing the wrong thing. Go see the doc and then worry about the rest of it.

Dear Sister, Life proceeds from our father in heaven. We are not allowed to take life or stop life, whether it be a just a pill in the earlier stage or an abortion at a latter stage. " Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" Jeremiah 1:5. Even if you have to face wrath from your family or even if you are put to shame in front of your friends and relatives, don’t worry. he will give you the strength to over come these situations. There may be many pro life activists who may advise taking pill in earlier stage is Ok. It is not true.
I pray that the lord may touch you and heal you from all anxities regarding these issues and promise the lord that you wont make the same mistake again.
God Bless.
Milton

I agree. My family reacted in the same way. Unfortunately, alot of rumors began to spread. I was the last person this would ever happen to. I was unaware of what was to happen later. I suffered when my boyfriend and I decided to get married quickly. He and his family abused me . I was hurt and alone and ostracized from my family. Whatever you do, dont let anyone influence you to do something that is against your conscience. Listen carefully and the Lord will help you. Marriage shouldnt have to be an option if you are not ready. One thing for sure, your bf should be responsible towards you and if it is so, to the baby.

Another thing, at the time, the priests did not help me much. One even told me to live with my bf before marrying. He said that I already commited the crime why should I get married? Other churches refused to marry us. I had to go through an extensive interview with a parish priest to see if we should get married. I was so sure that that was the best decision to make. I did not see the trap I was to fall in.

The CC does not offer much help to women like us or girls that are pregnant. This still hurts me. They offer no help whether it be spiritual or for the well-being of the woman.

Be strong and pray to the Lord. Our Blessed Mother was of great help to me.

God BlessGod bless and I will pray for you.

I am posting here because I am beside myself with stress right now.

I am a practicing Catholic, mid-20’s, and could possibly be in the most difficult situation I’ll ever face – being a single Catholic mom. And wondering how to break it to my very loyal, conservative family.

Bf and I got carried away a couple weeks ago (never, ever happened before… we both agreed sex is reserved for marriage). We did not even commit the act itself… technically I’m still a virgin… but after researching online, I believe I may still be pregnant.

I don’t have positive proof of pregnancy, am waiting to take a HPT. But I am having symptoms. Although I cannot tell if it’s stress or pregnancy symptoms, but they’re painful. I won’t know for sure for week or so.

A friend of mine urged me to do Plan B but I refused… which sort of makes me feel like a hypocrite (commit one sin but not the other?) Still I couldn’t do that.

My deepest fears are because my family is very conservative Catholics, which makes my situation all the more unbearably hard. I find myself feeling lost and hopeless, because my family and even friends have looked to me as a role model for chastity. Because I always was, til weeks ago. Well if you’re truly Catholic there’s only really one thing you can do that’s keep the baby if there is one and trust in GOD to see you through it. I would be honest with your family they maybe angry, hurt or upset especially at first but they’ll come around eventually if they really love you. I think the world is too quick to throw of anything that is the least little inconvenience and so it will tell you to go another direction but remember if your catholic then there’s really only one road to follow when it comes to certain choices. If the opinion of the world gets to remember there. Why is it a baby when it wanted but not even human when not wanted. The world will tell you there’s no absolutes but GOD will tells us otherwise. Prayer for you and your family.

Um, there is nothing against Catholic doctrine or belief that precludes someone from giving a baby up for adoption.
