The phrase “get over it” angers me and others like me who have fought for years against loneliness. We are biological creatures as well as spiritual creatures. What Valentine’s Day does in a lot of ways is reinforce the loneliness many of us feel.
It is not so easy to “get over it” also when you have specific problems in your life that make you lonely. For example, in my case, I have OCD. It is generally well managed but on occasion the anxiety I feel gets the better of me and I can become a bitter, negative person. Often this happens when I’m in a relationship because for me that is a very anxious time. My periods of being like this don’t last very long, like sometimes a day or two. But often that is enough to end the relationship.
I get it, I mean a lot of people complain about being single on V-Day when they have the power to change this. Some people are not so lucky. I am a sensitive, very nice and very fun man who has had a life of loneliness because no one takes the time to understand me. Valentine’s Day exacerbates this.
