When you have confessed major sins like murder or rape, how do you forget them after confession and is it good to forget your past or should you be proud that you confessed it all?

If you’ve confessed major sins like those, it is a fair assumption that the only way the priest forgave you was upon the assurance that you were truly sorry. A major piece of showing that assurance would be your promise to turn yourself in. Though the priest may not require this as a condition of absolution, he also cannot simply say ‘oh well if you’re SORRY no need to do anything more’. You don’t just forget major sin in the sense of thinking you need not atone, just say ‘sorry’. When you make adequate restitution you have not so much forgotten your sin but you will have made restitution and what is remembered is not ‘sin’ but God’s grace and your cooperation with him.

But it might be better since you seem unsure of what confession is to start with looking up “Confession’ here in the website’s library so you know that it is NOT just “I’m sorry for murder now I’ll just forget about the whole thing”

God forgives and forgets our sins once’s forgiven. It is impossible for us to do that. Just try to sin no more!

No, no, a thousand times NO. How many times must we remind people that the priest cannot require the penitent to reveal his sins in any way. This breaks the seal of confession and CANNOT be required by the priest.

I’m not sure where you’ve gotten the idea we “forget” our sins after confession? This isn’t a teaching of the Church.

While God forgets our sins as does the priest in persona Christi, we don’t necessary do.

Reparations should still be made. If it is especially something like rape and murder, and if one is truly sorry for this, it is right and just for that person to go to the authorities.

We are intended to learn from our mistakes. If we forget the error and what it cost, we risk forgetting the lesson learned. Confessing is not to be proud of, but to be relieved that the burden was removed; but even more so that you have conformed your will more closely to God’s.

God is omnipotent. He cannot forget anything.

God’s forgiveness and mercy is abundant.

Also, while some may forget, not all priests have this gift, nor is it part of Church teachings that the priest forgets. I rejoice that while hearing my sins, my holy priest will never mention them to another living person.

Neither. I don’t believe most people have the ability to forget something so severe, and pride is definitely not the proper response. What we do is learn to live with the gravity of our error, which changes our lives forever. That is true repentance; the very purpose of our call.

You didn’t read the rest of what I said which specifically stated that such a thing may NOT be demanded as a prerequisite of absolution.

Pray! Pray! Pray!
Especially, go for Mass, visit Jesus frequently in the Bl. Sacrament, Rosary, The Way of the Cross and Divine Mercy prayers are great! Take a close look at the Divine Mercy image or even the Sacred Heart of Jesus- in it you see the heart flamed with His love for you!

"Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy, with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul" (Diary of St. Faustina, 1602).
" When you approach the confessional know this, that I, Myself am waiting for you there. I am only hidden by the priest, but I Myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of Mercy (Jesus to St. Faustina)."

***REMEMBER: Our Lord’s mercy is bigger than our sins!!!
