Yes, I do. The songs she chooses can be reinterpreted so it expresses the Catholic experience. On The Voice not all songs she sing may be her choice though. As far as her novelty as a nun, recall that the first performance is a blind audition. Those judges have her a good listen before all of them turned around. She had to have the vocal chops to even be considered.

They can be reinterpreted if one wishes to do so. I doubt that the average viewer of The Voice is doing that.

They might not without the invitation. Sister Cristina is extending that invitation. It’s not unlike Cornerstine media’s approach with Psalm 151, using the songs that people listen to and considering the message in the songs, good or bad and that some love songs could be sung as love songs to God.

It would probably help more if we just ignore people who actually believe music, as in just the sounds as opposed to lyrics expressing a message, can be “sacred” or “profane”.
Yeah, it generally crosses my mind to just ignore them. Still, it’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I blame it on being raised in an environment that didn’t allow rock and metal because they were “Satanic”. Well, in general, there was just way too much concern about what was evil and not enough concern for what was good, which I think is where a lot of the resistance to rock and metal comes from.
At the very least, this hand gesture is satanic.
And so is the Cross of St. Peter.

What concerns me is that the Priest in the video seems to make the assumption that Sister Christina is doing it to appear cool when in fact she may be doing it because God had gifted her with a good singing talent and she is doing it for His purpose and not for self fame or to appear cool.

I mean no disrespect to the priest but It’s almost like he is either lumping in together all the situations of ‘Catholic music issues’ he has seen -ie:he probably knows of some genuine abuses like rock music in mass for example-and then is lumping this nun into the same category and isn’t able to see the nuances/differences (I hope that makes sense). Either that or perhaps he is self projecting his own mentality onto her.
It seems premature to criticise her publicly and assume her motives etc especially since her own superior Nuns support her.

Sorry, I dropped this → /s
the hand gesture is rather clear.
No, it isn’t. I’ve never seen it used in anything remotely resembling a Satanic context. (Edit: I should add that I’m aware of some Wiccan uses, but I don’t hang out with Wiccans that much.)

It was used at my school because it mimicked our mascot, and I know schools with similar mascots do the same. No one associated it with anything other than a bull.

In rock, it is the “rock on” symbol, and it is generally attributed to starting with Dio, and he didn’t bring it into the culture because of some Satanic belief. In fact, he specifically said well after the fact that it was not the devil’s sign.

It’s not the music itself that is the issue though,it is the lyrics.
Ie:any type of music is not sinful and can be a good influence if used in the right way.
For example,if rappers used their music to rap about the perils of crime and drugs and turning away from these things, rapped against abortions etc as opposed to making the lyrics about guns and derogatory sexual comments about women, then the rap would be a good thing.

Growing up, I was always happy the Catholic Church seemed more sane than many of the evangelical/ fundamentalist Protestants on the subject of popular music. Not everything was considered OK, but there was a lot less of calling rock or metal “the devil’s music” or claiming kids would go to hell for listening or need an exorcism, etc. I don’t want to see the Church go down that road.

To me Sister Cristinas voice is good but not superb and I agree that it’s likely more the Nun factor that made her win rather than her voice being outstanding.
Maybe her voice would sound even better if she underwent training but either way, isn’t it a good sign and not a bad thing if she did win because of the appeal of a nun in a habit?

It could have went the other way in this modern world of Ariana Grandes etc.
This world especially the music world is often against religious expressions and the judges and audience could have showed disdain at seeing at the Nun.
Isn’t it a positive and not negative sign for Christianity that she won or am I seeing it wrong somehow?

On the surface her song choices can seem just like shallow pop songs but I think the song choices are quite intentional and can almost be tongue in cheek.
For example with “like a virgin” its like she’s reclaiming it-who’s more virginal that a nun touched by Gods love-she’s taking the seediness, salaciousness and sex away from how Madonna would want the song and is instead making it pure by singing the lyrics to reflect a relationship with God rather than sordid/sex for first time.

Do the people that have an issue with it is it because it is a Nun singing pop music or do have an issue with pop music in general?
Do you yourself listen to pop music?

It applies in that God has established a regulating principle in order to be pleasing to him-

“Stop imitating the Pagans. Stop it.” That’s the principle.

But rock isn’t pagans worshipping a false god, as was the case in the Deuteronomy passage. It’s people making music. There was clear evil associated with what God was forbidding in Deuteronomy. There is no clear evil associated with any music.

At first I thought it could be a good evangelization opportunity and I was rooting for her to succeed then win.

But then the fruit of her winning and recording “Like A Virgin” was in such bad taste and bad judgement that it made me rethink and doubt the whole thing.
