But, is a nun/sister actually a “lay” person? They, after all, have received the Sacrement of Holy Orders, no?

I.
no, women do not receive Holy Orders. she made a profession or solemn vows when she joined a religious order, but that is not the sacrament of holy orders, and religious sisters belong to the laity.

In any case, unless and until the pewguy sees that indeed a non-ordained person, speaking from the pulpit, giving a teaching based on the readings (not an announcement, blurb for Catholic Schools Week, asking for volunteers for CCD or youth group) w/o a deacon or priest giving at least a brief homily on the readings of the day, there is no abuse. By definition whatever the lady says it will not be a homily, because she is not ordained.

no it is not the responsibility of the parishioner to tell the priest his job, nor does he incur guilt for attending or assisting at Mass in which an abuse occurs. However we the laity are entitled to Mass and the Sacraments which are licit and valid. for the proper way to register a complaint, see the Lay Witness Protocol from Catholics United for the faith at cug.org.

The Mass is not the place to protest.

Do it before and after – hopefully with a great deal of prayer. If you cannot enter the sanctuary without being angry, upset and/or hurt then get a replacement and stay away.

It really is that simple.

In my diocese, a sister speaks at mass once a year about the collection to support the retired religious of the diocese. She does this after the gospel. In my parish, the pastor makes some remarks about the readings, in effect a very abbreviated homily, and introduces the sister who gives her talk which she also relates to the readings.

This is done with the bishop’s approval. Undoubtedly, if her talk was given before the last blessing, many people would exit at that time. Also, the collection is taken up at the offertory, so the talk is given before then.

I accept that the bishop has the authority to permit this infrequent and mild abuse. I don’t agree with it but I don’t complain. I respect our bishop personally and as bishop.

My suggestion is to choose your battles and pick the most important ones and those you have a chance of winning. Otherwise you will get a reputation as a crackpot and none of your concerns will be taken seriously.

So IMHO you should attend mass (of course) and carry out your assignment. Take the priest as your model. He will do his part of the mass and obey the bishop. Perhaps you could explain your concern to him and he would do as my pastor does and give a short homily before the sister speaks.
I largely agree.

Students from the Newman Center do the same thing at my parish once a year. It’s advertised in the bulletin as there is a second collection. I usually attend Mass elsewhere that weekend. No sense in getting worked-up about it.

If I am scheduled to serve Mass then I buck-up and attend, but I DO NOT play the visible martyr.

I am positive the Church fully well knows John 8:7----yet She has indeed bound everyone to do all that is in there power to stop abuses. Are you now placing yourself above the Church. Are you now the “church of ethelzguy”.

Perhaps the more appropriate act would be to attend Mass, repentent of one’s own sins, grateful for the opportunity to receive the Body and Blood of Christ…and leave the judging to a higher authority…
How would the “higher” authority know about this abuse? A nun giving the homily is an abuse that has warrented the VATICAN to speak out about it. Redemptionis Sacramentum even addressess it. The Roman Catholic Church (ie the bride of Christ) is NOT a democracy. When the Vatican says somthing is NOT to be done then it should NOT be done. THe sign on the front of the church says Roman Catholic on it then it should act like a Roman Catholic CHurch. It is an outward disobedience that needs to be reported. AS MENTIONED IN REDEMPTIONIS SACRAMENTUM THE FAITHFUL ARE BOUND TO ENSURE THAT ABUSES ARE REPORTED. Carindal Arinze even give the address to the congregation and ensures that all inquiries are dealt with. Sooo just sitting in the pew and letting things happen is NOT accpetable.

To the OP I suggest you continue to press your pastor about fixing this abuse. I was the thorn in the side of the pastor and believe me it DOES work.

ANother thing to consider…you would be amazed at the other people in your parish who are distubed about it as you are but they simply sat on their hands. I found this out when I decieded to take action (AKA the THORN)

Again, I stand by my comments. If I see a woman bonk her husband with a frying pan, that does not make ME a “victim of abuse”. Simply being present during, or observing and alleged abuse, doesn’t make you a “victim”
No, but wouldn’t you be considered an accessory to the crime if you witnessed it and did nothing?
I do care about abuse…when it’s REAL abuse. This petty nonsense gets quite sickening…but after the sickening feeling passes, it becomes downright comical.
One small stone is of no consequence until it starts another stone rolling, and eventually there is a rock slide. ALL abuses are REAL.

And the sickening part to me is that people sit back and watch it happen.

Witnessing violence, i.e., domestic violence indeed could mean you are a secondary victim (as opposed to primary). And not “victim”.
/OT

Until you used it no one has used the word “victim”. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say that the PPs think of themselves as victims. What people are trying to say is that they have a right to go to Mass and not have innovations all over the place as though it doesn’t matter or the faithful don’t know any better. It does and we do.

Not at all. But I have enough “abuses” within my own soul to be repentant of when I attend Mass, that to walk in with my nose up in the air like I’m “Oh, so Holy”, and looking for reasons to complain about my Church and her clergy.

While I am certainly not in a position to ascertain the state of someone else’s soul at Mass, I DO know that I have myself and my relationship with God to ponder during the sacrifice of the Mass…far moreso than any need to be on the lookout for some petty alleged abuse.

But now you’re comparing apples and oranges. My post was in response to a post that claimed that by being present during an alleged abuse made THEM “abused”.

Let’s keep it in context? 🤷

Going off on a tangent here…I was using an example to illustrate a point, not discussing domestic violence

As I stated in another post, I was refering to a claim by another poster that by being present during an alleged abuse, that THEY had been “abused”…thus the term “victim”..

You have it backwards. This is not about one believing one is holier than another. It is having the humility to obey the Church.
For you to say abuses are “petty” — it is apparent you have not been following the mind of the Church. One more thing —the relationship we have with God includes the Church.

Who was given the keys to bind and loose —you are the Church. It is despicable to use scripture to undermine the Church’s authority to bind. And that is what you are doing.

Somehow, I fail to see the “humility” in the dozens of threads here regarding alleged abuses in the Church.

Please elaborate as to how I have “used scripture to undermine the Church’s authority to bind”. The John 8:7 verse? Or perhaps the verse about planks and specks?

I’m not undermining the Church at all. I’m taking a stand against those who seem to feel that they are above the clergy in determining what is right and wrong within the Church.

The sickning part to me is the gross overeaction to a Nun speaking at Mas. on the list of problems facing the Church this has to rank about 100,000th or lower.Yet this simple (and evdienly rare event) has people calling for videos be sent to the Pope, writing letters to the bisohop , going to another chruch, ignoring the speaker while praying the roasary and now is eliciting blanket condemnation of the congregation for not runnng this Nun out of the Church on a rail
