Wow. Wildlife biologist or psychology, that’s sure up there.

Any thoughts on this?
JoyfulLife, I honestly don’t know the answer to the question above. I have not spent very much time with religious and I’ve never been one myself, so I would not feel comfortable answering it. This is a question that would be best addressed to either a vocation director or a spiritual director. I hope you understand. God bless. 👍

Alrighty, thank you. 🙂

I totally didn’t see the date on that news article! Wow! That’s OLD. Thanks for pointing that out.

LOL, yeah. Wildlife biology is not a known like for personalities like mine, but I’ve always liked animals. I used to have a dream about becoming a veterinarian, but that dream kind of disappeared when I discovered animal research and I became intrigued. Research has always been a favorite past-time of mine. As a result, I’ve learned a lot over the years. My mom jokes that I’m like a human computer. 😊

You’re welcome. It astonished me to hear that there were problems within the RSMs, but then I noted the date and felt better. 🙂

Yeah, I’m very relieved, too, as I might consider them if things don’t pan out with the SsEW.

Have you any idea what I could do with this interest in google-researching supplements (peoples experiences and testimonies, and articles about them)? A nutritionist said she involves researching and advising supplements in her job. I can’t think of anything else…

What do you mean? Do you mean a career that would allow you to do those things?

I guess whatever kinds of work that would involve that…

If things don’t work with the SsEW, and I discern the Sister of Mercy, I’d be considering what kind of work to do with them. I’m pretty clueless as to what I would find satisfying and would be good at.

I’m sure that if you discerned that you were called to the RSMs, they’d assist you in discerning what apostolate you were called to. They don’t just have a medical apostolate, contrary to popular belief. They also teach in schools. The health care part is their main role as well as protecting and enhancing the dignity of human life. They are very pro-life as they deal with it in all stages. They are more of a missionary order as some of the Sisters who are doctors were sent to Haiti when they had disaster there a few years ago. Several people needed surgeries and medical care so the Sisters volunteered. I think that is beautiful, but I am not sure I am called to that because, as I stated earlier, I discerned during my time with the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus that I was called to a more semi-contemplative community. This is why I contacted the Sister Servants first. 🙂

I will try to look up some possibilities for you as far as the medical field. Would you want to do this outside of a religious order, too, if you found you were not called to religious life?

Wow, now that’s a scary thought… outside of religious life. I feel so called to religious life, and I just don’t feel satisfied in the secular world… I pray it works out…

Sure, please list if you find anything. It’s worth looking into.

And another thing is that I love to be in a Catholic environment. Being around Religious or Priests or in: Church, convent, Catholic gift shop, Catholic hospital, etc. It’s the closest thing to being in a convent, to me. I feel I need the support in my faith of being in that kind of environment.

Thank you so much for any suggestions. 🙂

On a sidenote, please say a prayer that all goes well tomorrow with my appointment w/neuropsychologist. I’m going to ask for a rec letter. My nurse and psych doc are working on writing letters for me. 🙂 All is going well for me. I hope you are able to get some, too.

I used to work at a health food store in the nutrition and supplementation department. I only worked there for a month, but I learned a lot. You might want to consider becoming a research scientist for a nutritional company like Solgar or Nature’s Way. Both of these are highly respected national companies and are well known. Solgar is one of the leading supplement brands and they are known for their nutritional purity as they don’t use any chemicals or man-made vitamins, only bio-available stuff. A good field to study would be biomedical research. Many schools have this department within their medical schools, like Florida State University (one among many).

hello all!
I am also discerning with the Sister Servants. What draws me so strongly to them is the Dominican Franciscan spirituality. I found out about them two years ago when I was visiting a Franciscan order shortly after visiting a Dominican order. I said to one of the Sisters on retreat with the Franciscans “I don’t know what He wants me to do. When I’m with Dominicans I feel Dominican but when I’m with Franciscans I feel Franciscan” She told me about the Sister Servants. I went to visit them in February and loved it there. I’m trying really hard to not jump to conclusions because I did that once before and asked for my application papers without discerning my discernment. I ended up really emotionally lost when I was told to wait a year because I had been emotionally preparing myself to leave home and when it didn’t happen I didn’t know what to do emotionally. I can look back on the past year and see many ways that it has been really good for me to stay here at home. I am also going for a certificate in American Sign Language which I know will help no matter where I end up and I know that in some way God is going to use that for His glory. I am also very attracted to the semi-contemplative life. I discerned with a Dominican cloistered order quite seriously and did my live-in over Christmas break. I loved the prayer life yet there was something inside of me that was dieing being away from the world. I’ve since learned that I am called to be in the world in some ways but at the same time my heart just longs to spend my life in prayer. I love the balance that the Sister Servants have.
I just looked at the clock and saw how late it is so I’m going to get off now but I’m excited to talk more about this later.

I just can’t say enough of how wonderful this order is. I have been on retreat there and found the SsEW’s the most Loving, Joyful, and happiest people that I have ever met.
Our daughter has been accepted to enter this summer, and I would have had reservations but after meeting the sisters and experiencing their joy my heart is happy and joyful like theirs. Please pray for my daughter that she my share in the sisters and our Fathers love in her vocation.

I’m not that big a fan of the lab/chemist stuff. I just like learning about what supplements are doing for people (not “it raised G7YH cells in the upper geonatal android” but rather “I feel energy and alertness on this product” hehe) and sharing the knowledge with others. I guess I’d be looking for any excuse to use google and vitamin websites to learn about products, and an excuse to tell people a little about using it. I don’t know that this would be something I should use with a job, or if it’s just a hobby kind of thing…

I’m sure praying that I’ll still love the SsEW order and that they accept me and wait for me. 👍

I keep hearing about how loving and joyful these Sisters are! I can hardly wait to visit them. 😃

Your daughter was accepted? Wonderful! Maybe I’ll meet her one day. What’s the process like for applying and acceptance?

Awesome to the other poster, too, that discerned with them. We’re getting a lot of friends of the order around here. 🙂

Ack. I can’t see or read too well since I just got new lens today. They said it will take a few days for my eyes to adjust.

The appt. with my neuropsych went better than I could have hoped for. It sounds like he is going to take many of the suggestions I gave, and do very well. He looked at the suggestion paper I gave him and said that I am “conscientious” and will do very well with the Sisters. I think that’s awesome to hear. He really thinks that it’s a combo of councelling and medicine that is helping me, and there could be more factors at play. He was impressed to see I’ve been going on 1 year and 6 months on medicine without any relapse. We even discussed about what you said about convent wanting to have the resources, experience and finances to handle a person. He said that he didn’t think there would be much needed in resources to deal with me, just the medicine. I don’t have a continuous condition, just two separate episodes, and once medicine is underway, I return to normal. He did ask if there was much in the area, so that if I ever got really stressed, maybe I could go to a counselor in the area of the convent. He even kept the print out on the order, so he may even come across this thread and message. 🙂

Because I used to be discerning with this order, and the Sister was very helpful, I talked to a Sister with the Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist and she said of supplements: “Basic vitamins usually aren’t a problem, but you do seem to have quite a variety.” and “It sounds like you have a good grasp of what your body needs to function well and this is great…” I also learned that Mother Mary Gabriel of the Sister Servants is Mother Assumpta’s sister. Interesting. 🙂

Now I’ve just got my counselor and PCP to ask for letters of recommendation, but I think the letters from my neuropsychologist and psychiatrist are going to be awesome.

hehe According to this article, I won’t get Alzheimers and “In the study, “conscientiousness” refers to a person’s tendency to control impulses and be goal-directed, and is also known as will, work and dependability, according to background information in the article.”

Does anyone know what orders are the most like the SsEW? If things don’t work out with the SsEW, I would like to look at similar orders… Habit, traditional, semi-cloister, retreat apostolate, joyful/loving/supportive, 20s/30s, strong emphasis on prayer and silence, etc. etc.

Did you know laetita_crucis when she was on Phatmass? She went and joined an order in England called the Dominican Sisters of St. Joseph. They are very much like the SsEW in that they are semi-contemplative, they have a full habit, they do retreats and catechesis (but don’t teach), etc. I am very impressed by the similarities between the two.

Dominican Sisters of St. Joseph

I’m not sure how they feel about people with depression, but they admitted her with permanent blindness and knew that she would need medication for the rest of her life, so it’s worth a shot, although, you will have to travel overseas. Unlike the SsEW, these Sisters allow home visits.

I’ll research to see if I can find any more.

Awesome, thank you! I did learn about that order. I’m rather hesitant to leave the USA. Maybe Canada, but…

Yeah, I know what you mean. I am very hesitant go overseas, too. If they were in the USA, I would definitely contact them, but I don’t feel called to leave the US. 😦

I also thought of some other religious orders for you to think about. I don’t know how these Sisters feel about medication.

Children of Mary

This is a totally semi-contemplative community, who, like the SsEWs, do not leave the convent grounds for their apostolate. I don’t know about home visits, but they do retreats and have volunteer days. They are very ermetical and promote the love of the Eucharist through Mary.

Little Sisters of St. Francis

These Sisters are semi-contemplative, not cloistered. They are totally Marian and are a very beautiful order. I am not positive, but they may not accept people with medication. You have to contact them to get a definite answer, though.

Sisters of the Most Holy Soul of Christ the Lord

These Sisters were very welcoming to me when I considered discerning with them. As it states on their IRL profile:
Any young woman desiring to be a Sister of the Most Holy Soul of Christ is invited. The community states, “If you are a woman of courage who is not afraid of any challenge, then we are inviting you to open up to God’s call and join us with joyful spirit.”
The vocation director didn’t turn me away when I asked her if they accept people with depression and medical needs. They are not a semi-contemplative community, though. They are more missionary and they include teaching as one of their apostolates. They are worth mentioning, though.

Trinitarians of Mary

Totally Marian order with semi-contemplative emphasis. They offer retreats for priests, girls and young ladies and catechesis. They also host a boarding school for young high school age ladies who are candidates to the order. I really like to think that they have a Carmelite spirituality because they have a special apostolate to pray for priests since Mary is their spiritual Mother and intercessor.

Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary

The webpage linked above leads to an explanation of all their apostolates. They include catechesis and retreats. No education apostolate, either.

Wow. Thank you. You’ve given me a lot to look at.

The Trinitarians look soooo much like the FI sisters! Crazy! 🙂 I was turned down by the FI Sisters because of my medicine. They were okay with my history, but at the time, we weren’t sure if it was the correct diagnosis. Now we know…

Now, did you list those orders because they are all with the retreat apostolate? Or because they are semicloistered? I haven’t found out what all their apostolates are…
