Such families do exist. Why shouldn’t this fact be acknowledged on TV?
Maybe it should but I’m taking issue precisely with the assertion that this is simply some neutral objective portrayal. I think that’s incredibly naive.
The gay men are shown as ordinary people, not perverted monsters, which is also realistic.
I don’t think they’re perverted monsters, I just don’t think they have any business being married or raising children as their own. A child can only have one father, not two.

Loved al bundy in married with children. Hard to watch him in this role.
This has to be a joke, right? So you hate a show about monogamous couples and love a show about a guy always trying to cheat on his wife and teenage kids having premarital sex?

Pope Francis is right. Some people are holding gay people to a standard they don’t hold straight people to.

Very perceptive! You got me there. Johnmann wins

What TV show ever presented gay men as “perverted monsters”? I think you’re projecting a preconceived notion on others.

Such families do exist but it’s not normative. That said, nobody needs my permission to live how they want, but an agenda is being pushed. That is the issue.

Peace,
Ed

Indeed. There’s an obvious message in the seeming normalcy of how it is portrayed.

I think it’s kind of apples and oranges. I never particularly liked “Married with Children” because the tone was so cynical and sour, it squashed (for me) any impulse to laugh at the (alleged) comedy. It was also a sitcom so more about broad comedy and didn’t have any high-minded morals to impart as I suspect “Modern Family” does.

If I were forced to watch one or the other, I’d probably go with “Modern Family,” since it seems to have a sweeter disposition. The gay couple thing does irk me, though.

Married with Children? Ugh. Might as well have been called the Dysfunctional Parents Show. The wife doesn’t do much and she’s married to a man who is not ambitious, a whiner, reluctant to have sex with her, a couch potato and a fan of Hooters. The daughter has a bit of morality as she exits a car with a guy whose idea of a date is POOGO - put out or get out. And the son? He’s out in “No Parental Guidance Wanted” land.

Ugly show. Marriage Bad.

Ed

I watched this show a few times but could not stomach it anymore, it is SO far from reality, its hard to watch, I wish these networks would create shows that actually portray regular families and not something so off the wall that nobody can relate to their lives!

It did make me laugh a few times though, but not because the show is funny, the episode I watched, Phil had a chance to cheat on his wife( who in real life, a guy like Phil could NEVER end up with such a good looking women as his wife LOL), but anyways, Phil pondered over cheating for a few days and decided to meet the other women, but started thinking about his family on the way, and turned back and did not meet the women, and the show made a big deal about showing him happy with his wife and kids at the end, but the same time, they were showing the 2 gay guys and some struggle they were going with about one of their ex-BFs, but of course, they made the right decision, and ended all contact with the ex and focused on their relationship together…thats what me laugh, the show makes a big deal about showing a guy deciding not to cheat on his wife, but at the same time, shows 2 gay guys going thru the same thing as a regular heterosexual couples LOL

Like I said, this show is SOOOOO far from reality, I dont know anyone who could relate to any of the characters!!!

The name is also very bad, how in the world did they come up with ‘modern family’? a better title would have been ‘alternate dimension family’

You have to teach the peasants to accept gay relationships. It’s “modern”! Yeah, about as modern as gay relationships were 20 years ago. Yawn.

Yep, “The Alternate Reality Show” would be my title.

I’m saddened but not surprised that so many people on this site don’t get Modern Family.

Why would someone as gorgeous as Sofia Vagara marry someone like Ed O’Neill’s character? Perhaps because she’s a single mother who has had her fill of men who can’t see past her looks and finds a fairly wealthy man who is smart enough to have created a successful business, is gruff but basically kind, and treats her son as his own, even though their tastes and interests are completely opposite, to be just what she needs.

It’s pretty apparent that the O’Neill character is very uncomfortable with his son’s homosexuality. Given the fact that he’s far from reticent, it’s pretty unlikely that he wouldn’t have made that fact known to his son. But this is a sitcom, not a morality play, and a discussion like that on screen would be out of place. So he continues to love his son (that whole “hate-the-sin-love-the-sinner” thing) and does the best he can to maintain a relationship.

I don’t think it’s unintentional that the gay couple who strive so hard to be perfectly correct are creating a bratty child. I think it’s an intentional poke at the downside of political correctness.

The rest of the characters are often shallow, vain, selfish, jealous - just like most of the people in my family. (Not I, of course.;)). But they do generally try to do the right thing in the end, and, as much as they squabble, they love and support each other and deal the best they can with their family as it is today.

Frankly, I think there are many shows that are far worse than MF.

Yes, it is very clear that TV networks are trying to push the gay agenda, by showing gay characters living normal lives, raising kids, being good people, doing good things for others, going thru struggles that everyone else does on a daily basis, etc. LOL I would think anyone could see thru this, but it seems alot of people have already been brainwashed!

you did a good job explaining the show, but that is not even close to the modern family. I have never heard of anyone living remotely like any of those characters.

In real life, the hot columbian wife married to the older rich guy would definitely not be faithful to him, she would be all in for herself and herself only…in other words, a gold digger, now this kind of thing is quite common today, so the network missed the reality on that one. I could go on and give more details about how actual ‘modern’ families live, but the jist is, most of the time, it is the complete opposite of what the show is portraying, I think most of us have better common sense to learn good morals and behavior from a tv show!!! if that was true, we would be in real trouble!!

this is TV and I hope most people see it for that…its just entertainment, its not real, and is not an accurate depiction of anyones family.

This is how I see it – “teaching the peasants”.

Never watched the show, would have no interest in wasting 30 minutes of my life doing so. I have to agree with the poster who said American comedy is like a pre-teen boy making fart jokes.
If I would not watch a TV evangelist preaching heresy to me, why would I watch a liberal evangelist preach depravity?
Just cause there’s a laugh track, doesn’t mean it’s not preaching.

I’m not understanding how you say it is “pushing” an “agenda” (especially since you’ve never seen the show) just because it has a gay couple as characters.

Are TV shows that have Catholics in them “pushing” a “Catholic agenda”?

This show is representing a very typical example of a gay couple. The writers show this couple in all their flaws and good qualities, too…and as well as showing all the flaws and good qualities of the other non-homosexual characters as well.

The show is not presenting them in any superhuman light or whatever.

.
Name one popular tv show where any of the main characters are catholic. Ive never seen one.

I disagree about their depiction of a normal gay couple…I have known a few gay people over the years and modern families idea of ‘normal’ is FAR FAR from reality!! LOL

America has become like Sodom and Gomorrah.
This reminds me of the quote from Billy Graham," If God does not destroy America, he would have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah"

Actually I believe the US is modern day Babylon, If you look thru my posts, I posted a huge list of things that the bible attributes to Babylon, and you will see EVERY single one fits perfectly with the US and could not be any other nation currently on the planet. I was shocked when I read thru this list!!! If you cant find it let me know and I will try to find the source again and re-post.

It is said when Jesus returns, he will destroy Babylon in 3 days, I truly believe this will be the US.

I’m pretty sure that if they are showing Lily as naughty (which I haven’t really seen them do) it is because she just went thru “the terrible twos”…not because her adopted parents are gay.

.
Exactly - it’s not like the other children in the show are wonderful in their behaviour compared to Lily.
