Size and shape of the New Jerusalem and how will it fit on the Earth?

I like to think that God has given us an inquisitive questioning mind because He wants us to seek Him. That’s why He poses to us many enigmatic problems, such as this huge, 1,500 mile cubed measurement for the New Jerusalem. God sent the prophet Daniel answers when he pondered the 70 years and gave him glimpses into the future and also end times. God says in Romans that He can be found in the works of His hands.

John when he wrote his book on the Isle of Patmos did not understand some things yet he wrote them down, including the New Jerusalem. John wrote about a 200 million man army when at that time there were barely that many on earth. It was such an unbelievable figure that John seems to be saying: " Hey guys, don’t blame me - I just write down what is told to me!" (paraphrasing, of course) But today, China can field an army of 200 million(I checked out this info from the CIA website)! Even instant world-wide communication is mentioned in Revelation when at that time the fastest communication was a pony express. I am sure that there were many in John’s time who would say, those things are just metaphors and not even give it a time of day.

So it is good to wonder about these things, especially eschatological matters because the end is near. Now as well as ever is not the time to be complacent and lay back and say God will handle. God wants us to stand up and search for Him,

I thought Christ said no one knew when He was going return. What makes you think the end is near my friend? Have we not been living in the end times since Christ rose from the dead? Also, what do you propose we do if we see this big cube descending down from the sky…other than get the heck out of it’s way. 🙂

Jesus also said, that we should be able to read the signs of the time, that we may know the season of things (though not the day).
Some of the signs that I see that His coming is near is the fact that there is a nation of Israel, rebirthed in 1948 in fulfillment of scripture. Before then the end times could not happen since Israel plays a particular role in it. I see the mark of the beast possible in today’s technology that no one can buy or sell without it via way of implanted computer chips in the hand or forehead. I see a nation with that impossible (at John’s writing) figure of an army of 200 million people. I see the possibility now of people being vaporized as described in scripture via atomic warfare. I see the frequency increasing in large earthquakes and alarming changes in weather and temperature. There are many other signs I would like to talk about but just know that Jesus said He is near, even at the door!

Christ is near my friend…though not in the doomsday way you imagine. I had a very beautiful encounter with Christ mere hours ago in the Eucharist at mass. I shared in his body, blood, soul, and divinity. That gift is offered to you, too.

I believe you’ve received some incorrect interpretations of Revelations and the Book of Daniel. I don’t fault you for that as it is soooo easy to come by. If you’re open to it, I would be happy to share with you in more detail how things may not be as grim as you say. Feel free to PM me.

It is not a grim thought to think that the end is near…in fact, as believers we wait for that day. There are many, many signs that can point to the end being end, yet we can never know the actual time.

Whether or not there will be an actual cube shaped Jerusalem, we will not know until the end does come upon us…yet it is certain that there will be a new Heaven and a new Earth…equating to the new or Heavenly Jerusalem. Even as this world is already passing away, God is preparing a new home for us. The vision of New Jerusalem is quite possibly a metaphor for the fulfillment–by God alone–of the establishment of His kingdom. All things will be made new. Rejoice! 🙂

I do, however, feel that there is great reason to contemplate our Lord’s return at this time in history…but not from fear, rather from great expectation and longing with and eye towards deepening our faith and helping to convert the world.

May the Lord Bless you according to the prayer of Numbers 6:24 for your response. Surely we, who long for the Lord look long and hard for His return. Maranatha is ever in our hearts!

I’d be interested to know what part of the interpretation of the book of Daniel is false? The Jews return to Isreal in 1948?

Yeah, I think you folks who interpret it that way miss the mark by about 1,878 years. A lot of the controversy seems to stem around the “fourth kingdom,” and what that means. I’ve come to believe the scriptural gymnastics you have to go through to make 1948 work are not an acceptable interpretation.

Christ and His Kingdom were foretold to be coming during this fourth kingdom when Rome ruled over Jerusalem. At that time he would establish His kingdom which would grow up to encompass the whole earth. In my view this points to a time of about 70 AD, after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

When Christ was talking to his diciples about watching for signs, he was warning them to watch for signs that would happen during their lifetime. When John wrote Revelations, he was talking to people of his day. What did they need to be on the look out for? Read about the Jewish/Roman war that Josephus wrote. The images he depicts are very close to what John describes.

And for you folks looking for someone with 666 tatooed on them…Using the Jewish numbering system of John’s day (gematria?) the number 666 spells out the name Nero. It was common practice to use this system when identifying political leaders as the Jews would know what the numbers meant, but a Roman soldier who intercepted a letter would not. Nero was the one who ordered the destruction of Jerusalem, though I don’t think he actually lived long enough to see it. Seems that he died and someone else actually carried out the order to destroy the Temple…I could be wrong there.

Most of the prophesies in Revelations have already been fulfilled. Christ already established His Church on earth. I went to mass there, today. Oh boy, that’s going to make some folks upset. Sorry. That’s the truth as I see it.

StCsDavid: Your Preterist view is showing. Basically your position is that every prophecy including the ressurection and second coming was fulfilled at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70AD. Preterism will not fly, has not flown, has tried and crashed.

You have to negate the Book of Revelation to hold on to Preterism because it was written about 96 AD, 26 years after Jerusalem’s destruction, and it is plainly written that the events described in Revelation are yet to come.

*"After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven and the former voice, which I had heard as of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up hither, and I will show thee the things that must come to pass hereafter.”
(DR english translation) Apocalypse 4:1

*The RCC does not hold to the Preterist view and I would consider that view quite heretical.

catholic2,

Why do you seem to reject that the NEw Jerusalem as a cube is likely to be a metaphor?

No, I don’t believe that every prophecy and the second coming have been fulfilled. I’m not sure what you mean by the ressurection as last I check that happend 3 days after the crucifixion. The second coming has not happened or we wouldn’t be writing to each other. The final battle has not happened either. I’m not a hyperpreterist.

I place the authorship from 65 to 68AD, before the destruction of the Temple…the book wasn’t compiled until 96 AD. John writes that the events will happen “soon” not at some distance time in the future. Why would he use Gematria to disguise the names of people if those people were already dead ( i.e. Nero and 666)? Why would he write to only 7 churches when by 96 AD there were many more? I can expand, but let’s start with this.

StCsDavid,

How do “you” place the authorship so early? Many top notch scholars place the authorship at 95-96 AD.

Personally, I think the 1500 mile wide cube is a borg cube coming to assimilate us into christ…

🙂

Sorry,
I jest…

thought…

How wide is the moon…
not a cube, but I think it is somewhere around that diameter

another thought…

a moon sized planet in a near by solar system that can support human life…

Final thought…

God knows hwo he is going to do this and we simply need to ahve Faith that we will understand what he meant when god says it is time for us to understand… Not trying to be rude… all three are things I think abotu with that… jsut wanted to throw them out there… 😃

Cheers

Josh

catholic2,

Why do you seem to reject that the NEw Jerusalem as a cube is likely to be a metaphor?
…because the New Jerusalem in all it’s biblical description is possible!

Last night on Coast to Coast AM a person who I believe is a scientist described a “sky hook”. Let me digress a bit. Up to very recent times, we had no material such as a string, rope or cable capable of holding it’s own weight after say a mile or two or so. Eventually it would break from it’s own weight. Now this person says that a new material was developed that would hold for 320 kilometers, the end of which if it was a ribbon, or cable would stretch out into outer space.

This cable would be attached to a satellite in geosynchronos(sp) orbit and it would be possible then to develop a lift or elevator attached to this cable for movement to space and back w/o the use of rockets, etc.

The new material was described as ribbon like, almost paper thin. It would start off from the satellite (say the Space Shuttle or a Space Station) and be sent down to earth.

Now I like Gottle of Geer’s idea of the New Jerusalem as a space ship. This space ship, a 1,500 mile cubed space ship, would extend upwards from earth, it’s top being 1,500 miles above earth! In effect it would be in geosynchronous orbit, even though it’s base touches earth! Now I want to have the privilege of calling this the Sonship!

Just a little more information. For perspective, the International Space Station is a mere 250 miles high. The New Jerusalem would tower six times higher than that!

Compared to the United States which is 9,631,418 sq. Kilometers, the New Jersusalem’s base is 5,827,473 sq. Kilometers.

Thus the New Jerusalem’s base alone is 60% of the USA.

catholci2,

Okay, those are all pleasant fictional ideas…yet none of those are rooted in Scripture. A very significant portion of Revelations is NOT literal text, so why should we think a 1,500 mile cube should be considered literal? I understand it “might” be a cube, yet there are compelling reasons to think that the text is speaking metaphorically.

I gotta throw the chalenge to you. Please back up what you say. I’ve already shown you that the City as described is physically possible, the 200 million man army is already here, etc. etc. etc.

Now why do you say it is metaphorical? What are your “compelling reasons”?
