Okay, Posters - is it just me?
There’s been some TV / radio announcements re Pope Benedict’s upcoming visit to New York. Children have been asked to design skateboards in a competition - with either the Papal colors or otherwise. Winners get to attend one of the Papal visits in April. I’m not exactly sure if Pope Benedict is aware of this (although I think so). I’ve only gotten some brief details and can’t give you anything too precise. Below is one link I’ve found but it’s been reported on TV news and as late as this morning on radio, referring to them as “holy rollers”.
Now, I’m not sure in what way His Holiness himself has authorized this - but is it me? Do I sound like sour grapes here? Or is the thought of putting the Cross (only one or two of the designs I’ve seen) on a skateboard where people will stand on it - sort of disrespectful? I know that basilicas and cathedrals have crosses in their tiled floors - but on a skateboard? Do children have any idea of the religious significance or are they in it just for the excitement of the competition? Personally, I’d rather see this done on something else - sweatshirts, maybe - but skateboards? What’s your opinion?
