Our Lady said at Fatima that “Wars are a punishment from God for sin.” That " polite little light show in the middle of nowhere" is one factor in an apparition that has spread devotion and prayer to millions since then, so it is not an isolated event even in the least.I think you’re straining the credibility of evidence there - as I understand it that’s what the girl who claimed Mary spoke to her wrote 24 years later.
There were 37 million casualties of WWI and then another 60 million of WWII. God (or Mary) could have softened hearts, stopped the mechanized slaughter, and established far, far more devotion in the world by placing the miracle over the battlefield at Ypres.
By that one small change of location God could have stopped war for ever and made all of us devoted Catholics. Those who believe in the miracle need to explain why an all-loving God didn’t do that obvious thing, and instead gave every appearance of turning His back by putting on a polite little light show in the middle of nowhere.
