I’ve noticed that at my parents’ local parish, they do this a lot. Is this something common and allowed in NO Masses, or is this something that I could justifiably complain about. Personally I think it should be in there, but I’m unsure as to the necessity of saying it.

The priest is not obligated to use the Confiteor if he uses one of the other options for the Penitential Rite. There are 3 that he may choose from, one of which begins with “I confess”. The others are:

The Priest says:
Have mercy on us, O Lord.

The people reply:
For we have sinned against you.

The Priest:
Show us, O Lord, your mercy.

The people:
And grant us your salvation.

The absolution by the Priest follows:
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Followed by the Kyrie (or Lord have mercy)

OR:
You were sent to heal the contrite of heart:
Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

The people reply:
Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

The Priest:
You came to call sinners:
Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison.

The people:
Christ, have mercy. Or: Christe, eleison.

The Priest:
You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us:
Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

The people:
Lord, have mercy. Or: Kyrie, eleison.

The absolution by the Priest follows:
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.

If you look in your missalette, the Confiteor is one of four options that the priest has in the ORDINARY FORM. In the ORDINARY FORM, there are three legitimate options:

A. The Confiteor

B. Have mercy on us, O Lord.

C. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart.

Also, the Rite of Sprinkling of Water replaces the Penitential Act.

Our Pastor prefers Option B. And there is a certain beauty to Option B. In Lent, we usually pray the Confiteor with the Kyrie.

Our Assistant Pastor prefers Option C.

Hmm, and what if it seems that none of those is said? I have never heard that first one that you mentioned, and I have heard the second but I know that it’s not said every week. So it seems like the Penitential Rite is sometimes skipped altogether. By the way, is it also necessary at daily Masses?

I’ve haven’t heard the Confiteor used much at the Ordinary Form Masses I’ve attended recently. I am sure with the new translation that priests will use it some so that people are used to it and the other options we have too.

I’m wondering what the Mass looks like if the Penitential Rite is skipped.

The priest makes the Sign of the Cross and then (outside of Advent and Lent) starts the Gloria? There’s nothing in between?

You would not have heard the first one until today because its the new translation that began today.

The Confiteor was in the old translation, albeit a botched translation of it. It was still there.

there are 3 versions of the penitential rite, are they using B or C?

Read what I was responding to please. It was about the options that were listed above, I was referring to what the OP was referring to.

Will I guess it was the C form then, looking at this again, though it was not following the words laid out before. Is that still fine if the C form is modified?

We say the confiteor almost every day at daily Mass. Today we said it at Sunday Mass, as we often do.

But then, we are a sinful group! 😛

In the previous version of the missal it was permitted to use other invocations. I don’t know if that is still the case. There are quite a few musical settings for option C so we tend to use that one at our parish.
