They’re not able to do it. The Church says NO.

Your asking “but what if they were able to do it?” is like asking “what if pigs really could fly?”
Not happening.

You have seen something that was wrong and fake and which the very attempt to do violated the law of the Church, then. You have seen a person committing a sin by taking a needless risk, or else you have seen a complete fake staged falsehood, also a sin.

What I’m saying is, if God gave a lay person the authority to perform an exorcism that you saw, what would you think?

God DIDN’T give lay people this authority. God doesn’t give people the authority to do things that the Magisterium has expressly forbidden.
You might as well say, “What if God gave a lay person the authority to fornicate?”

I think that’s a little different. I think I’m going to have to go to a higher up to do some further investigation

Sure, please feel free to call any bishop, archbishop, cardinal or the Pope.

The answer will be the same as the canon law posted in this thread.

By the way, when you saw this how did YOU know that the person was possessed?
The Church never performs an exorcism without extensive investigation first.
The person would have to go through a full physical and neurological examination to make sure there are no medical problems.
They would have extensive examination by a psychiatrist.
If these check out they would have extensive examination by a priest who is a qualified and authorised as an exorcist by the Church.

Oops… I shouldn’t say those words from now on. If I encounter the attack again, I’ll just say the powerful name of Jesus. Thanks all for your insights.

Sleep paralysis is a purely natural phenomenon. When you become aware that an episode is occurring or about to occur, perhaps pray for peace and comfort until the episode passes, rather than focus on the malevolent feelings generated during the episode.

If these are happening frequently, or are particularly distressing, it may be helpful to speak to a doctor about potential treatments.

Incorrectly attributing natural phenomenon to a malevolent eternal entity may increase your distress, and prolong the episodes unnecessarily.

That’s the right way. You can always say “Jesus, help me!” Or just say His name.

You can also call on the Blessed Mother, St. Joseph and St. Michael for extra prayers.
St. Joseph is called “Terror of Demons” in his litany.
St. Michael is the Archangel who fights off Satan.
And Mary will always help protect her children from Satan just like in the art works of her punching the devil or beating him off with a stick.

This. I had it several times in my teens and early 20s. There’s nothing demonic about it any more than a sore throat is demonic.
My daughter suffered from benign rolandic epilepsy, which commonly strikes while a child is sleeping. Although it’s not the same thing as sleep paralysis, to the layperson it looks like sleep paralysis on steroids. Scary for a parent to witness.

How do you know?
Because exorcisms require authority that has only been granted through the church.

It’s kinda like a young kid saing that they are an archeitect and a builder because they made a tree fort. No matter how well built they just don’t have the authority to call themselves an architect. That’s a degree.
