What does it mean when someone sees smoke rising from the cup before and during Consecration?
Anyone ever heard of this?
Thanks for any help.

I can mean a number of things.

Some of which we are not allowed to discuss on this forum

It might mean that incense is burning relatively close to the chalice.

It might also mean that your vision is getting a bit cloudy and it might be time to set an appointment to have your eyes checked for cataracts.

Sometimes God allows us to see things that others do not see. What you saw could be just for you. Perhaps for your faith, perhaps a message, perhaps nothing at all.
Pray to God about it and ask Him if it was from Him to allow you to understand it and if it was not from Him to help you get rid of it (erase it from your thoughts). Pray the same to your guardian angel and to Mary. They will come to your aid. If God allows you to keep this in your thoughts sometimes it’s part of a bigger puzzle.Keep it to yourself, it’s for you.
I saw something once that helped me to understand something else some time later. (vague I know, but it was for me)
Praise God in all things!

Sometimes smoke comes off the candles on the altar.

As St. John of the Cross advises, dismiss these things, even if they are divine.

Probably an optical delusion.
Possibly a temperature difference between the contents of the cup and the air in the church. Similar to the mist you see rising from your Starbuck’s coffee in the morning.

Matthew

Amen to that …Especially the last part EVEN IF THEY ARE DIVINE.

RIght Maura?
More than one saint has advised, or been advised, to stay way from private revelations - so I apply the “if it is good enough for them (the saints), it is good enough for me” rule.

Really? Name just one saint that has said we should stay away from private revelations…(which includes Church approved ones)

Are you picking on me? I responded to a quote from St. John of the Cross put up by another poster - so what is the problem??

Persecution Complex?

Claiming that a Saint said something and providing a source are two entirely different things. You made a claim that multiple saints have advised staying away from private revelations. You are being asked to back that up. How is that picking on you?

James

The quote from St. john of the cross said nothing about staying away from private revelations.
So please - in this discussion about the meaning of someone seeing ‘smoke’ (as the OP listed) what are the things referred to in “dismiss these things” quote?

I don’t want to see people getting into arguments over this. Basically the gist of the advice here is: forget about it, correct?

I did not quote St. John of the Cross - yet this person made a crack about the even if divine section of it as if I said something wrong.

As they say - just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you. :yup: 🤓 :doh2:

I looked up things that are not supposed to be mentioned in posts on this forum and one of those are private revelations. So I assume that is what they are talking about.
