That is if you really understand what this is really teaching…this is teaching of a complete and utter rejection of the gospel…now, it may take the form of premeditated sin that is enjoyed and continued without conviction and without chastisement…but the root of that sin is unbelief. And if you continue in the context…

1 John 5:18-19 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

This cannot mean that they never sin - but that they will never commit this sin…Mortal sin is not the loss of salvation as some say but a sin that is commited by unbelievers…one who has been born again will not commit mortal sin.
Who’s interpretation are you using? Yours? As to your last statement that one born again will not commit mortal sin, I can tell you that I’ve managed to do it.

This is the problem with OSAS – I have known some Born Again Christians who were pretty sinful. So either there is no sin for them (because they cannot lose salvation) or there is sin – in which case OSAS falls apart, since the Born Again can lose salvation just like anyone else.

Well, to apply truly circular logic, that would mean you were not “truly” born again; you merely thought you were.

I don’t know how someone so believing would explain how Peter managed to deny Christ three times, which one presumes was a sin (a literal turning away from Christ). We Catholics take comfort in the fact that even the greatest among us can sin, repent, and return to the fold.

If that were the only passage in Scriture I guess one could come to the conclusion you do but of course there is more Scripture, much of which contradicts what your personal interpertation tells you.

But the greater question is if one saved by Faith alone why would it matter if they sinned? Luther conteded that one could sin all they wanted once they had been saved.

The problem is, if you ask certain Protestants if coveting a wife is different than coveting a donkey, they will say, “No difference.”

All of the groups of evangelical Protestants that I was associated with over the years said that no sin was greater or less than another sin. I remember someone gave us the example once that stealing a pencil from work is no different than raping and murdering a child.

So don’t ask the question about coveting the wife vs. the donkey, because you might not like the answer and you will probably want to punch the Protestant in the face. (I wanted to when they gave the pencil vs. child rape/murder example.)
I agree with you. How flat out ridiculous is that??? It doesn’t even go along with the law of Moses in the Old Testament. If every sin is equal, then why are some sins worthy of death and others simply flogging or paying back what you owe? Ridiculous, so ridiculous!!!
