Thank you for this. One of my pet peeves is people who criticize a priest for smoking. Are you kidding me!?!? With all our priests give up and everything they do 24/7, this is not something that should even be discussed. This is from a non smoker who at one point, smoked heavily.
NO I never got the idea to smoke from those who smoked in front of Church
YES I agree it is not very respectful but did not Jesus say, “Judge not lest ye be judged.”
How do you know that person who is smoking wishes they could quit. And is sitting there in front of Church praying for God to give them the strength to not light another cigarette?
When I was converting from smoker to non smoker I can tell you I spent allot of time in Church praying that God would lift the temptation from me.
I LIKED SMOKING! AND NOW I KNOW HOW BAD I STUNK! But I did it anyway. I quit for only health benefit.
YES I have seen Priests smoke. SO? These men are adults, and if you give up what most would call a normal life, vow to be celibate, etc etc. And if you want a cigarette …roll with it. After all, he could have just hear a bone chilling confession and cannot tell anyone he has to internalize this… FOREVER!
NO The Priest smoking did not make me want to smoke.
If you smoke, there are more respectful places than in front of a Church. But, instead of being a critic. Offer prayers. Because as much as I liked smoking, I knew the risks I was taking with my health. I always knew I needed to quit. And I wished I could. So instead of offering more guilt, offer to pick up the chains of bondage of a neighbor, friend etc. And help them.
