Bath salt? 😱

Are we talking actual bath salts that you take a bath with, or is this a new street drug referred to as ā€œbath salts?ā€

This is news to me. Now I’m starting to wonder if I need to get rid of the lavender bath salts we haveā€¦šŸ˜¦

It’s a drug. They used to be passed off as actual bath salts, though, from which the name comes. Perhaps most famously, they were possibly responsible for the ā€œMiami zombieā€ attack.
The Catechism defines drug as that substance which ā€œinflicts very grave damage on human health and lifeā€ and which is not being used on ā€œstrictly therapeutic groundsā€.
The actual text of CCC 2291 reads, " The use of drugs inflicts very grave damage on human health and life…" So it seems less that that is what a drug is and more why they are wrong. Alcohol, tobacco, and medicine are likewise condemned when used in excess (CCC 2290), but their separation from ā€œdrugsā€ indicates that they aren’t considered drugs.

Sure, use of drugs: psychotropic rather than medical purposes. As it states in the Compendium succinctly:
Also to be avoided are the use of drugs which cause very serious damage to human health and life, as well as the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco and medicine.

Passing on what my parish priest told me on this issue. He’s a great guy who is very well educated and I trust him, but he’s by no means infallible.

It depends entirely on your reasoning.

Doing it daily to ā€œchillā€ and enjoy ā€œThe Matrixā€ with cheetos and a mountain dew is probably not a good idea. It may likely constitute sin as a chemical dependency issue.

However, if you are doing it to alleviate something like anxiety, depression, nausea, pain, etc… and it’s cleared by a doctor and monitored, combined with consent from the people you live with (spouse, generally), and it does improve the quality of your life and helps you function better in your daily life, AND it’s legal where you live, then it is not likely sinful any more than taking a daily anti-anxiety medication or tylenol, really. If the person is functioning BETTER as a result of the ā€œmedicationā€ then the negative effects of cannabis use becomes on par with the side effects of any prescribed medication. ALL medications have side effects.

I personally don’t think the church has made a declaration on the issue because it’s not a cut-and-dried thing.

In my personal opinion…I agree with him. But again. Just passing on what I was told.

Smoking has not traditionally been condemned on the grounds of reason, but like getting drunk, Marijuana usage can be a violation of the 5th commandment in that it kills the reason, and not for reason’s sake. Smoking is to be disliked for its disastrous health effects.
It is best to avoid drugs such as these.

The argument for smoking being a sin is that is self-harming (given medical records) and leads to addiction so it is a fleshy passion, you smoke because your body wants it now not because you want to.
Considering the price going higher and higher because the powers that are want to encourage people to stop smoking (actually the extra fees put on tobacco go to healthcare because it is believed that as a smoker you will more likely use healthcare so, if you insist on smoking you should pay more) the smoking addiction can lead for you to no longer be able to take care of those who need you because you have to feed the addiction.
However I don’t know how it can be a mortal sin at the point where it’s an addiction because you no longer have much control over it.
Getting an expensive addiction will make you be very unhappy unless you are financially endowed to afford it, that is for sure.
I smoke. I wish I didn’t. I don’t feel guilty for it but I wish I didn’t.

I’ve known many cigar and pipe smokers in my lifetime and none of them do it for pleasure.
Well, I do… I certainly don’t feel that I ā€œNEEDā€ the tobacco. They’re a tasty treat in my opinion.
All started off smoking cigarettes and moved up to smoking cigars and pipes
That’s rather unusual. Most people who smoke cigarettes don’t jump over to cigars or vice versa. I tried a cigarette. It tasted like scrap paper filled with ashes and dipped in peppermint oil. It was disgusting.

Really it’s two different philosophies. Cigarette smokers want a nicotine fix and are definitely going down the road of addiction. Whereas Pipe and Cigar connoisseurs are trying to coax the flavor out of their tobacco and enjoy themselves.

I attempted to introduce a cigarette smoking buddy of mine to fine cigars. These weren’t cheap gas station cigars. No, these were $12 hand rolled imported sticks. Anyways, I showed him how to properly light, toast, rotate, and draw. He couldn’t smoke it! He was literally unable to resist the urge to inhale the cigar smoke. He was coughing and choking immediately! I was astonished that a regular cigarette smoker couldn’t handle a cigar.

After that I came to the conclusion that these two tobacco camps aren’t really compatible. Nor are they truly comparable.

Uh huh. Do the research and you’ll see that there’s a big difference between cigarette smokers and cigar/pipe smokers.
