So, did you see the new Star Wars movie yet?

I’m not a fan of Disney, but id rather boycott and petition ABC for televising the O Neal’s. I haven’t watched many Disney monies the last few years because of their PC correctness in their movies and also their “redoing” fairy tales" so it conforms to feminist ideas. If you boycott anything it should be Disneyland, where it will hurt. This park has a Pride Day, and has had this for a few years, yet it was built as a “family” park. However, Star Wars will be a huge movie both here and abroad. And I do plan to see it although I may wait until the DVD comes out. I still love the original 3 movies, not do much the prequels.
Concur. Disney probably could give or take people seeing the films it sponsors, provided they herd en masse to its parks in California and Florida.

These are supposed to be family-friendly venues, yet they had light shows to celebrate gay marriage??

Not yet.

I will probably use the new film to finally watch Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress first.

Then I want to see the new version of Macbeth.

I saw it opening night. Good but not great, I thought. But it feels like a film that could grow on me.

I am going again this Sunday – just booked my ticket for the AMC Waterfront in Pittsburgh. AMC Theaters has this thing going for the first four Sundays of the movie’s release, where if you see it at one of their theaters in IMAX 3D, you get a free poster (while supplies last). Different poster each Sunday; this week it’s X-wings. I booked a ticket for the 4:00 show, and will plan to get there early so hopefully they have some left when I arrive.

Seen it I still have not.

On the posters , good luck I wish you amigo.

As I was walking out of the theater my brother noted that it really didn’t have a plot. I agree with him. I did enjoy it, though. “Rey’s Theme” is a great track.

I share similar sentiments, though I liked it more than you did.

I thought Carrie Fisher’s plastic surgery made her face look frozen at times when compared to Harrison Ford’s face. General Leia’s horrid lines didn’t help at all. The scenes between Han Solo and Leia were borderline corny.

While I’m not as harsh as you on Abrams’ Star Trek movies – I enjoyed them – I have to agree with a lot of Trek fans that, at least to some extent, he really doesn’t “get” Trek. By his own words he is a lifelong Star Wars fan so TFA was a dream project for him.

In fact, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that his Trek movies have some Star Wars in them. (Complete with planet-destroying superweapon in the first one. 😛 )

I’ve seen it twice now already (hey, don’t judge me!) and I have to say, it was better the second time around. First time I had so many expectations and was slightly disappointed they decided to go with another “blow up super weapon” plot, but going in a second time, I found I really enjoyed it! Sure, it wasn’t a terribly original story, but it didn’t need to be. It needed to bring the fun back into Star Wars, and it succeeded in that terrifically.

And I love Rey now. She’s a worthy succesor to both Luke and Leia. She’s everything a female protagonist should be. Strong but not masculine, soft but not weepy, and not sexualized at all. I thought the actress did a great job. I totally believed that was her first time seeing trees when she landed on that planet. Hope she goes far in her career.

And both have the characters watching the planet be destroyed from another planet a few light years away even though they technically shouldn’t be able to see it for a few years because light doesn’t travel that fast. 🤓

I liked parts of it, but had serious problems with the others.

I read the following in-depth review by John C. Wright, a well-known SF author who is also an unabashed fan of the first two films. (He explains why he is not a fan of the 3rd film, or any of the prequels, in the review.) Mr. Wright is also a very orthodox Catholic, so he is writing from that perspective as well as that of a science fiction fan and author. He put into words a lot of the things that were bothering me, including the use of what is known in fiction writing as a “Mary Sue” character in the form of Rey.

His review is well worth reading.
