I moved to Texas and went back to school for a Master’s in Teaching. I found what I thought was a Catholic university. Over the past year, I have come to realize that this school is catholic in name only. I understood that. But tonight when I went to class I saw two flyers that just made me feel terrible. One was a breast cancer awareness seminar to take place on campus and sponsored by one of the sororities and the Komen foundation are the guest speakers. This university has a high school that did the race for the cure and they were already told not to sponsor any future Komen activities. Here we are again inviting them on campus right in the middle of the 40 Days for Life (which by the way there were NO flyers for). The other flyer was for a meeting for the Gay-Strait Alliance group to meet on campus!

I honestly would leave except that I only have a semester and a half to go before I graduate and have sunk a huge amount of money into this degree already. I am thinking of not walking for my graduation in protest. I will also write to the president and alumni association that I will never donate to the university until they start living up to their name. At this point the degree itself means nothing to me. I have already passed all my state certifications but am not considered fully certified until I complete student teaching which I do next semester. My certification is the only thing I am working for now. I am actually embarrassed by my university and will avoid telling people where I went if possible.

Thoughts, ideas?

Cool down. Most universities are liberal, after all, and showing kindness to gays isn’t such a horrible thing. Be proud of your achievements. Chin up.🙂

You have a right to be disappointed. A school which advertises itself as Catholic ought to be Catholic.

I’m sorry if you thought I was being unkind to gays, in fact I am very nice to all the students there. I think you missed the point of my post. This is a “catholic” college. There is a clear conflict when the university sponsors activities that promote something the church has very strong views against. The school actually has a very large gay population and they are very open about their homosexuality mainly because it is almost an unwritten rule there that you are not allowed to question it even with charity or even to defend the Church’s position (which I am aware is that we never disrespect or devalue the person because of the sin). In fact, I would almost say the university is proud of itself for this. I have heard they plan to sponsor a gay pride parade. Also, I worked there and was constantly shocked at the (non catholic) leadership. The person who approves all university sponsored activities and guest speakers flat out told me she is not Catholic and supports Planned Parenthood 100%. I gave her information on alternative agencies that do not support Planned Parenthood and she went with Komen again anyway!

My feelings of disappointment come from my assumption that because the University claims to be catholic they would be catholic when in fact they are about as uncatholic as they come. You are right, universities are very liberal, I expect that from a university that identifies itself as a secular university. My thought is if you call yourself Catholic, act like it!

Kindness is fine. Open acceptance is not. How can we as Catholics accept as normal something the Church tells us is disordered and therefore abnormal?

It really makes no sense at all.

Monica YOU MUST COMPLETE YOUR MASTERS…because you will make more money if you decide to teach at the Community College level. Most of them pay you according to the level of your education.

You only have ONE 1/2 SEMESTER TO GO!!! Don’t throw it away because you are disappointed with the so called Catholic University. No body will care what university you graduated from. Employers will only be impressed that you have your MASTERS.

Catholic Universities need outsiders in order to stay in business. Otherwise your university would have to close down their doors.

Catholic Hospitals are also faced with the same problems and it is really hard for them to stay open. I think most of them end up closing down due to lack of financial support and Catholic support.

I am a retired college professor and career counselor. Please stay in school. You are going to be really surprised how much the MASTERS Degree is really worth.

Stay out of the politics of the university and just go to class and go home.
When you graduate you can tell them off with all of the things you really want to say to them. Lucy

Just keep pluggin’ along.

I spent four years at a small “catholic” school and I too almost left. Then I realized that there were very few Catholic schools in this country who live up to the idea that they are Catholic AND have a respected intellectual foundation. For some reason in today’s university Catholic and intellectual do not go together.

It’s good that you’re at a Catholic school, even if it is having some liberal issues. Seriously - just keep it going and push through. It will only make you stronger.

I’m sorry I must be missing something about Komen. Do they support abortions or something?
Cuz I’ve been doing that Race for the Cure for YEARS! I thought it was a good thing?

Think of how St. Teresa, among others, worked for the reform of the Catholic Church or her corner of it, within the Church. I can certainly appreciate your horror, however look for the ways that you might be able to turn it around. At least it isn’t a university that won’t use the name of Catholic! Contact Fr. Pacwa or a pro-life organization and find out if there are pamphlets that you can put around the campus. Also, contact a body which teaches JPII’s Theology of the Body (EWTN?) and see if there are brochures/pamphlets that you can put around of theirs. Of course, you’ll need to contact a campus authority for permission for this, however the person you choose to contact might be feeling much as you do, but feel their hands are “tied” whereas a student has more leeway. Besides, if they are trying to be “open” to all thoughts, they should not be against the Church’s since there is money involved in using the Church’s name. If they still won’t, contact their bishop (very well-documented, of course), whose job it is to ok them calling themselves Catholic and for the teaching of the Church in his diocese.
Even saving one soul is certainly worth this!

100% agreement (also with the post by Ad_Deum telling tou to “keep pluggin’ along”). Please don’t quit now if you’re even thinking about it.

You’re going for an education. Your going there is not an endorsement of everything that goes on there. Where I got my master’s there was a pro-gay organization and other things I might not necessarily agree with. I just had to tell myself that I was there for an education and accept the fact that the education is made available to people of different backgrounds and beliefs.

Good luck.

I am glad that Signet agrees with me 100%.

I attended a none prestigious university but because I had my MASTERS I was able to find a job as a career counselor at UCLA.
There were others with masters from UCLA & other prestigious universites but I was better qualified when I applied for the job…

In our life time we experience and see many things we don’t like in this world. There are times when we can do something about it and there are times when we can’t.

Attending college is a very stressful time because you need to study and pass your exams. You have a home life and you may also be working. You have enough things to keep you busy in your life.
I have seen students self destruct because they were too busy trying to make changes in their universities. They didn’t get to graduate because they didn’t put in the time in their studies.

My last words to you is your main job is to be a student right now.
If you want to throw that away you will be sorry for the rest of your life since you are so close to graduating.

Once you graduate you can get envovled in making changes at your university.
