I moved to Texas and went back to school for a Master’s in Teaching. I found what I thought was a Catholic university. Over the past year, I have come to realize that this school is catholic in name only. I understood that. But tonight when I went to class I saw two flyers that just made me feel terrible. One was a breast cancer awareness seminar to take place on campus and sponsored by one of the sororities and the Komen foundation are the guest speakers. This university has a high school that did the race for the cure and they were already told not to sponsor any future Komen activities. Here we are again inviting them on campus right in the middle of the 40 Days for Life (which by the way there were NO flyers for). The other flyer was for a meeting for the Gay-Strait Alliance group to meet on campus!
I honestly would leave except that I only have a semester and a half to go before I graduate and have sunk a huge amount of money into this degree already. I am thinking of not walking for my graduation in protest. I will also write to the president and alumni association that I will never donate to the university until they start living up to their name. At this point the degree itself means nothing to me. I have already passed all my state certifications but am not considered fully certified until I complete student teaching which I do next semester. My certification is the only thing I am working for now. I am actually embarrassed by my university and will avoid telling people where I went if possible.
Thoughts, ideas?
