Thanks guys. My fiance and I talked more about this tonight. WE agree that whatever happens, happens, but definitely want to try working this until he has his degree, at least.

So…where to begin? Is there a catch all go-to resource? Certain thermoeter brands that one would reccomend? Best books?

I recommend “Taking Charge of your Fertility” by Weschler. Again disregard her advice to use a barrier method while ovulating. My Thermometer is just a standard digital basal body temp thermometer. Mine does beep and light up so it makes it easier to use when you are comatose in the morning. Make sure it is for measuring basal body temps as regular ones may not be sensitive enough.

I also kept the thermometer and a pen in a small binder with my charts on my nightstand. That made it really easy.

I have those bookmarked online no 🙂 I’ll buy giftcard monday so I can order them.

Syri if you anticipate any health issues, or if you do not have regular sleep schedules use creighton method (or marquette).

Creighton is connected to Napro technology and this is the method used to diagnose and help treat health issues.

The main methods are sympto thermo, Billings, Creighton and Marquette. I’d recommend reading up on all of them together and mutually deciding. I would not recommend Cyclebeads or the Standard Days method which are simply calendar based methods.

I wa wondering about sleep lasat night. My job requires me to get up at 5:30 some days to be at work by 6:30, but I sleep in other days. Would I be fine setting my alarm for 5:30 every day to temp, then going back to sleep when I dun have to get up? Does it work better after a consistent number hours sleep?

I’m looking into symptothermal or Creighton. I’m a very dedicated person with an amazing attention span, so I’m definitely not afraid of the commitment a more involved method would bring.

I’m so glad y’all have had good experiences with this. And finding non religious/secular suport for it has given me more confidence as well. Not to doubt Catholic websites by any means, but it’s good to know that people OUTSIDE the support of the church even approve of NFP

I have read that taking your BBT the same time every day is ideal. I have been slacking with it lately to be honest. Slacking on the time, not on taking it, I mean. As long as you’ve been sleeping for (I think) at least 6 hours, you will have an accurate basal temperature when you wake up. You could always set the alarm for the same time every day, and then on days that you’re gonna sleep in just go back to sleep after taking it.

six hours. Well I guess this gives me insentive to break my up all night routines!

At least you’ll be prepared for a surprise baby in that respect. i hear they do keep you up all night lol!

I can work a 10 hour shift on three hours sleep and be a-ok…now! I’m sure that will change as I get older!

Yes - you’ll work a lot more efficiently when you’re older -stuff that takes you ten hours to do now, will only take five hours, once you get over 40 - so you’ll have more time to sleep. 🙂

I just find it sad that I see people posting everywhere here that NFP is used as birth control and people are so afraid to have children. This is what society has done to us. Brainwash us that children are an inconvenience to be avoided. Sorry I just find this whole thing so sad,

Me, too. Children have really been commodified - we can “want” or “don’t want” children, the same way we can “want” cars, or some other kind of luxury item - and we can “can’t afford” children in exactly the same way - people say “I can’t afford children right now” in exactly the same tone of voice that they say, “I can’t afford a Mercedes Benz, right now.”

Excuse me, I am not AFRAID to have children, I just know it would be better for us to WAIT to have them. I want, like, 7 kids eventually, but right now we’re hopinh to wait, but accept that accidents may happen. We’re college students. fair jobs, just getting started. a baby wouldn’t be a burden, but it ould be best to wait a few MONTHS at least. My motherr had 7 children, ones she couldn’t feed, who went hungry for days on end, who couldn’t be given medical care. Pardon me for wanting to avoid such a situation.

Call your parish or diocesan family life office and take a class. I suggest you learn via an instructor, chart, and have your instructor review your charts.

Sierrah, your judgmental attitude is not helpful at all. Children are wonderful, but they are also the biggest responsibility a person will ever have. The OP is wise to be doing some planning ahead of time. The Church puts no requirement on the number of children a person should have; it does, however, call for us to be RESPONSIBLE parents and make RESPONSIBLE choices for our families. Using NFP IS being open to life by its very nature.

I’m a 100% devoted sahm of 3 (barely surviving, to be honest) with one on the way-- it seems to me that only a person with no children could make such a judgmental statement about NFP because you simply don’t understand what you’re talking about.

Man I wish I could do that…I don’t handle lack of sleep well. God must have known that because our daugther slept through the night at 1 month old. My husband on the other hand is like the energizer bunny…lack of sleep doesn’t even pahse him.

NFP isn’t birth control…It’s responsible family planning. Having a baby while both my husband and I were in grad school, working full time, and paying off debts, would not hav been the end of the world, but it certainly would not have been ideal either. The stress load would have meant less time and attention to the baby. We used NFP to get through those first 3 years of marriage, learn about each other and grow as a couple and now we are much more prepared to add kids into the mix. I can stay home with them, and really get to enjoy being a mom (most days 😉 ). I don’t think being responsible is a sin.

Syri…you are being very intelligent about planning your family, and that shows great fore thought and common sense. You are going to be a great mom. Taking time to be just a couple is healthy and wise, learning to be a family of two is important, so that you can build a healthy family of more later on.

I too knew a family that had tons of kids and no way to financially support them, the mom was always pregnant. They kept saying that God would provide. Well it got really bad and ended with the mom embezzling from her employer to feed the kids. Turns out the dad was doing the same thing and both ended up in prison for stealing over $20,000.00 between the two them. The kids had to be split up among relatives. It was a bad situation…a little NFP might have gone a long way to prevent their family from being ripped apart.

Thank y’all again! I spoke to my fiance again tonight, more in depth, sharing some of my concerns. He says that like me, this makes him nervous, and he hashis doubts, but if I believe this is what I need to do, we’ll try and make the best of theoutcome.

I realized today my main anxiety was him feeling like he may be pressured into this, even though he’s part of the Church of the Nazarene, and thus has no hangups ith ABC. I told him I didn’t want this to happen (life long marriage commitment) if he felt as though this was unfair, or I was cheating him, but being the wonderful man he is, he spent a looong time assuring me he didn’t feel any such thing.

Looks like you found a keeper. Marriage is so much deeper than just the physical part. After 5 years and 2 kids trust me, it’s only a small part of the bond between husband and wife. I’m glad you found someone who loves you and that kind of level.

Congrats and I hope you have a wonderful marriage.

I’m glad as well. There as a lot of pressure form som epeople in my family to leave him to find a Catholic man, but he’s far more accepting of my faith than any Catholic I’ve dated.

That’s exactly hat he told me. If we have to be super safe and not have sex 2 eeks a month at first, we’ll deal. We talkes about how we’re so excited for so many OTHER thngs besides that. We got all giggly and happy abour how nice it’s going to be to just SLEEP together. Actual sleep, not inuendo sleep 😉
