Same thing happened today at our morning Mass. The Yellow Pages Flip.JReducation said:Speaking of Franciscans, did anyone see the Sunday mass on EWTN? The Friar was so attentive to the changes in the wording that he lost his place in the missal. Our missal has many more pages and things are in a different place, because we have all of those Franciscan holy days. When you get used to one missal and they throw another in front of you, you have to learn where everything is. At one point, he had to turn from one part of the missal to another and you suddenly saw him flipping through it as one does through the Yellow Pages and the look on his face was priceless.
Father has been a priest for 25 years, and I could see him struggling against his habits, the words, postures and gestures which have become a part of his life. I feel sorry for him, because he is so used to everything, stepping back, bowing and clasping his hands at certain points, and now everything is thrown out of whack. It really brought home what a big change the priests. It’s not just a few different words. They have to relearn almost the whole Mass, and instead of concentrating on praying, they have to worry about the mechanics of the whole thing like when they were in seminary.
So I’ll hold the new 75% bigger missal for Father on Thursday evening. Gonna have to eat my Wheaties.
