OK sounds like I should watch it and not be afraid of the gore! lol! thanks guys

I was pregnant when it first came out, so I didn’t see it at the movies.

My husband watches it at Lent.

I attempted to watch it with him.

I thought it was violent to the point that it distracted me. I no longer saw Jesus as the focal point. I could only see human depravity.

So I stopped watching it. I’ve never seen the entire film. I don’t think I will.

I saw it when it first came out. I won’t see it again due to the violence. It did make a strong impression on me in terms of strengthening my faith.
The one scene that I still contemplate is when Jesus is carrying the cross and meets his sorrowful mother. He says to her “see, Mother, I make all things new!” It is so incongruous with the suffering and defeat all around him. Worthy of meditation.

It is violent, but I think it’s less than what is shown in many movies and Primetime tv shows (Game of Thrones springs to mind). The reason the violence in The Passion is so disturbing is because we know it actually happened to our dear Lord and Savior and was worse than what we see. It’s terrible watching someone hurt the Person I love most in the world.

I agree with Anna…I cried and cried while watching it…but it was still such a blessing to watch it…it felt like being there in person. I’ll watch it every Lent from now on.

Jesus refused to speak to Him when brought before Him (and some saints have said that is because Herod was in an automatic state of excommunication because he married his living brother’s wife,)
Not only had he illegally married Herodias, his living brother’s wife, but he also ordered the execution of John the Baptist. Either of those was an automatic excommunication.

I don’t watch tv or movies like that if I can help it. I have actually gotten up and left a movie once or changed channels on tv if it gets violent. I think a lot of violence can be “done” without actually being shown, but the movie/tv makers like to include it.

I watched it in a theatre when it first came out. A group of six of us, including our pastor, when to the evening showing. What was most amazing was the crowd as it left the theatre. No one spoke a word, no one could. If it doesn’t move you in some way, there is something wrong. It is violent, it is graphic, and it allows one to finally realize what actually occurred that Friday. I have a copy at home, I have never watched it again. I really think if you have seen it once, there really is no reason to watch it again. One time will, or should, leave a lifetime impression.
And you will never look at a crucifix in a Catholic Church the same way again, once you’ve seen the movie;

I’ve got a condition I can’t spell vasovagal fainting. That is that I can faint if triggered by pain, or sight of blood.

It’s not very frequent at all. It happened once watching an episode of ER. 😖

Another time in my teens we had gone to visit a family friend for lunch, and as she was preparing, she slipped and cut herself with a knife. The blood loss seemed extreme to me.

So I got very light headed and almost fainted. The paramedics thought I was the patient when they arrived.

😖

I think the film opened people up, who were not maybe familiar with the suffering Jesus went through, to the reality of the situation.

The barbarity aspect makes it difficult to watch. And I feel that this overtakes the spiritual depths of the overall Passion message, to some degree, as there was also spiritual pain.

To say, was this torment worse or a little lighter than what He went through, seems an awkward question. We were not there and answering either way, seems to me to be somehow irreverent.

Isaiah said no bones were broken, and so we know that. But He definitely suffered, both physically and spiritually.

In terms of the theology, there were issues.

It was nice to see a film that did not leave out the Blessed Lady. Although, such things are so holy, it is difficult to surmise such a life.

The effort gone to was obviously great and so it is an offering. And the actors had some experiences that were obviously not something that I would think my place to argue with.

I think it brings home a message but is still a film that sits mostly on the shelf due to the horrifically brutal scenes.

Yesterday I found an old episode of “The Big Valley”.

About 10 minutes in, there was a fatal shootout involving Heath. (Lee Majors played Heath I think, and he resembled Little Joe Cartwright)

It was completely bloodless, but there was a dead guy shot by Heath just lying in the street.

Jesus died because of human depravity. It’s kind of ironic that people know he died the way he did, but they don’t want to acknowledge that it was way beyond the norm.

If Jesus had been given the lethal injection instead, the impact would not have been as great. (I know the lethal injection did not exist back then.)

I’m not talking about anything he really said. I mean his appearance and behavior. It was extremely comical- that’s what I’m getting at.
A short definition of Herod Antipas, The son of Herod the great,

Jesus called him that fox.

Still in english their names have the same initials, just saying☺️

The movie was not anti semetic.

It was following scripture.
The movie also portrays people who were against Jesus crucifixion and who sympathised for Him, such as one of the Pharisees (whom it says in scripture complained at Caiaphas secret trial of Jesus: ‘Why is this trial at night? And where are all the other counsel members? This trial is a sham!’). Such as some of Herod’s slave are shown to feel sorry for Jesus. The Holy Women are shown to weep at His carrying of the Cross. It portrays just what scripture says.

The bible even tells us:

Scripture says:
‘The crowd cried aloud in one multitude: ‘Crucify Him, Crucify Him! Away with this man!’

Portraying a movie on the Passion of Jesus is not a sin, it was based on the bible, and a number of the saints’ visions of Jesus’ death.

☺️
Saint Pope John paul II saw the ‘Passion of the Christ’ movie himself, and stated about Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion of the Christ Movie’:
‘’it is as it was”
(That Jesus Passion would have resembled similar to what the movie portrayed).

Does everyone know, Mel Gibson said he is currently working on ‘The Passion of the Christ Sequel: The Ressurrection,’. And that Jim Caviezel is back acting as Jesus in it.
I hadn’t heard that. Thanks. I’ll be watching for it

Every Christian should watch this movie at least once. It opens one’s eyes to the importance of religion. It is the reality of Christianity.

Every time I do the Sorrowful Mysteries, I relive it. When I contemplate the Passion, I see it. It is why I reflect on a large crucifix before my EMHC rounds.

It is a reminder of where my priorities should be .

YES.

That was the movie. The sorrowful mysteries. Thursday evening to Friday afternoon. I’ve also been to the holy land. All the places, all the mysteries of the Rosary.

he movie itself, has to be close to the sufferings of Jesus. The crucifixion and death scenes made me break down and cry as if I had lost my mother, brother, sister’ If you know the Love of Jesus and feel Him in your heart you know what I mean. Alot of people were afraid to watch the Passion of the Christ because it was so graphic Jesus’s way to the Cross was beyond graphic…Watch the movie if you have not seen it…You will look to Him and know the true meaning of love. God bless you
When I saw the film, everyone in the movie theater was sobbing and crying.
