So I'm eating my Yoplait yogurt and it hits me - I think I just sinned!

I was eating my lunch today and looked at the lid of my Yoplait yogurt and noticed that it was time for the yearly Save Lids to Save Lives campaign. I looked at the lid a little closer, and was horrified to realize that the program supported the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation, who gave over $600,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2009-2010.

While I don’t think I committed a mortal sin, I’m finding myself getting lost in scrupulous thoughts. Do I throw away the two yogurts that I have in the fridge, or eat them since they are paid for? Do I never buy Yoplait again, or only not buy the yogurt that specifically supports the Susan G. Komen foundation? Or do I simply abstain completely and offer it up for the intention of saving the unborn?

Buying the yogurt and eating it is not a sin. The contribution to SGK only happens when you mail the lids in. As long as you throw the lid into the trash, you are fine.

I think you are being scrupulous about it. I’m sure there are many other things that we buy that somehow make it’s way to uncharitable hands (to say the least)

You already bought the yogurt - eating it is not a sin. If yoplait donates to PP, then I would stop buying from them in the future, but buying the yogurt without knowledge is NOT a sin. How can it be? Now that you are aware, you are responsible. Before, you weren’t.

You realise that even if you did mail in the lid, it wouldn’t be a sin unless you did it with the purpose to have a percentage of that sent off for planned parenthood. So, don’t worry about things like this unless you put a check in the mail with the intent of the money going toward abortions.

Buy Dannon next time. They contribute to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which is pro-life. Its a win-win situation.

Better yet, buy those big tubs of greek yogurt! And then you can recycle the tubs when you are done, instead of trashing them.

I didn’t know this. I eat a lot of yogurt. I’m glad this thread was started.

(but really …I must add that Yogurt in the US is not the best anyhow…the real Yogurt is in France…or other European Countries…if only they would have it here…

or maybe some kind Yogurt expert out there will point me to anyone who does do the real thing…I mean someone who knows from experience the French plain Yogurt…that you add stuff to…heck they even had it in a gas station there!)

Even if someone did tell you you could find “real Yogurt” in the US, wouldn’t you want to know if buying such would be contributing to PP or not? Isn’t that what the OP is really concerned about? Wouldn’t you want to know there is an alternative that’s pro-life?

I am happy to know that Dannon is pro-life; I was not aware of that. Thankfully, it is the only yogurt I eat - mainly because it is fewer calories than Yoplait.😛

Also, a local parish collects the round yogurt containers that Dannon uses. I believe they get money for them, which is always a good thing.

I second the motion on buying Greek yogurt.
My mother made yogurt herself in a Salton. Bitter, but it was very real. Dressed it up with her homemade StrawberryJam and it was edible then. Not a glop of slop that is Yoplait.

Not quite. If you mailed in the lids knowing that a portion of your contribution was going to Planned Parenthood, you would be guilty of remote material cooperation with evil. Whether that rises to the level of sin is between the mailer and his/her confessor. But you don’t have to intend the money be used for abortions to make it wrong.

I did not know that. Thanks! 👍

I love Greek yogurt. I want a yogurt maker for just that reason. But until then, Dannon is making Greek yogurt now. That sounds like a win-win. 🙂

Twas a side comment.

(others had the OP question well in hand)
