So it's May already. Did your parish have a May crowning?

Mine didn’t, and to my knowledge never has. I’m guessing that most people around here probably have never experienced one, and wouldn’t even know what they are.

Things like May crownings wouldn’t go over well around these parts, apparently. 😦
 
Ours is scheduled for next Sunday. (It’s like this every year–first Sunday in May = First Holy Communion for the 2nd graders, second Sunday/Mother’s Day = May crowning.)

My parish does this Sunday as well as a Living Rosary. As the Phoenix diocease’s patron is Our Lady of Guadalupe, its a pretty common event.
 
When I was young my Catholic grade school always did it. I’m not sure if there was a separate one just for the parish or not but it was, and is I am sure, so beautiful. As an Eastern Catholic attending a Roman Catholic grade school this was definitely a tradition I loved. The 2nd graders get to wear their first communion dresses and suits and the 8th graders wear their graduation gowns. An 8th grade girl and boy crowned Mary. The boy held the pillow and we walked side by side through an aisle of 8th graders holding flowers and when we reached the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary I placed the crown on her head and the little second graders started singing. It was really very cute and beautiful. I’m fairly certain it is done the same way. I believe ours was always done during the first week of May.

Parish and interparochial school both have a crowning; it’s tradition.
 
We will do it on the 18th after the last of our 4 weeks of First COmmunions and all the kids have received. We invite the kids to dress up in their communion outfits and we process from the church around the block to the back of the church where we have an outdoor statue of Mary. There one of the girls crowns Mary and the choir sings and we all recite a prayer. It’s very nice.
 
This is one ceremony that I have never experienced, even though I’ve been a member of at least 10 different parishes in my lifetime.

Reading that the children wear their First Communion outfits means little here as our Bishop has asked his priests to actively discourage the ‘little bride/little groom look’ and to simply insist on clean & modest clothes that can be worn for other occasions.

Maybe misgivings like that’s is why it’s not as prevalent.
 
They have them here all May, and the bishop has a big one in Rockford.

Our parish one is Thursday at 8:45 AM. More people actually attend this one in the deanery than the evening ones.

Every devotion is open to abuse. Every faithful doctrine is open to heresy. You don’t suppress the devotion or the doctine because evil can subvert it – rather like throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

And, yes, every parish in which I have ever lived (St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland and now Alexandria, VA) has had May crownings. Some were “bigger deals” than others, but they all had them.

What I DON’T see any more is home May crownings. When I was a girl (and the dinosaurs roamed the earth 😉 ) one of the things that so drew me to Catholicism was my best friend’s home and family. They always had a little altar for Mary in the girls’ room and, on May 1, had a family May crowning with an aluminum foil crown. I, of course, was left out of this devotion (being Protestant and all) but always longed to participate. So, when my own girls were little, I got the chance! 👍
 
yes, one ceremony for each CCD session–I got our own statue in Mexico specifically for this purpose
the school has one–they have a larger chapel size statue

and before every Mass the first weekend in May, run by altar society, which is when people bring their fresh flowers. there has to be 6’ x 12’ array of flowers in vases, packed tightly together, in there now.
 
We already had one for our school, and I know of another one happening at the end of the month.
 
We certainly did.

The girls who recently recieved Confirmation and the girls who are about to receive First Holy Communion next week processesd around the Church wearing light blue satin cloaks.

The Confirmation and FHC boys formed a KoC 4th Degree style “honor guard” for the girls as they processed up the center asile.

Three of the Confirmandi girls did the actually crowing while the kids sang Marian hymns.

No more so than giving your Mother flowers for Mother’s Day.

How could THAT be considered idolatrous?

This is how my Parish does it. The Mission parish I attend had ours this past Sunday, during our usual CCD time, between the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mass and our children made their First Communions at the 11 a.m. Mass :D.
