So let's talk about today's readings 5/29/09

“all my being, bless his holy name.” This line from today’s psalm is what strikes me.
It’s what I want.

Today’s gospel makes me smile because I once had a little one who loved to say,
“Do you love me?” (yes) “then feed my sheep”!

Also, this part of the gospel:
“but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands,
and someone else will dress you
and lead you where you do not want to go.”
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God"

How do these words signify being crucified upside-down?
There are many today who have grown old, someone else dresses them and
leads them where they don’t want to go. Not one of these is crucified!

So what struck you about today’s readings? :bible1::twocents:

In mass today, Father asked us, “What would you say in reply if Jesus asked that question to you?” Poor Peter, after denying Jesus 3 times, Jesus asks him 3 times if he loves Him…that was what struck me. Father said, our answer should be a loud and firm “Yes!!!”

But, being honest with myself, my answer would be, Oh Jesus, I hope one day to love you as you created me to love you. I am still so far from loving you with my whole heart, with my whole soul and with all my strength!..

I disagree with your statement about the people who’ve grown old and that “not one of these is crucified!” These people ***are ***being crucified, through illness, loneliness, pain, mental anguish or some combination of difficulties, each one having a unique cross chosen by God. We all need to embrace our crosses and be like Jesus, Who showed us the way to Heaven when He died on His Cross. Jesus went through the Crucifixion on Good Friday to get to the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Each of us will have to do the same.

so sorry I haven’t been around been busy .

Todays readings My opinion, Pauls condemnation because he was teaching about the risen Christ, Yep hes alive and I feel him , and I listen to him Jesus Isn’t he awesome!

Peter telling Jesus he loves him 3 more times , and reminding us he denied him 3 times in knowing Jesus, ( before the Crucifiction) Like my Priest said in his homliy at 5pm mass tonight, follow Christ now and always. Years ago they followed Peter because he was First pope , today we follow Christ and his apostles ( our bishops, priests, and popes). I really like these verses in John But I know if I don’t read between the lines I won’t understand a Great Gospel. We do everything for the greater glory of god.

I disagree with your statement about the people who’ve grown old and that “not one of these is crucified!” These people ***are ***being crucified, through illness, loneliness, pain, mental anguish or some combination of difficulties, each one having a unique cross chosen by God. We all need to embrace our crosses and be like Jesus, Who showed us the way to Heaven when He died on His Cross. Jesus went through the Crucifixion on Good Friday to get to the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Each of us will have to do the same.

Bless you, hollyangel, you surely have a heart for the suffering… I’m completely not
saying that suffering people are not suffering. My point was about these words,

was that I can’t see how these words signify an evil and violent death by being crucified upside-down. That is the way Peter was viciously killed. To me, these
words offer no clue of the kind of death he will one day experience…

I too have a heart for the suffering elderly…I am sure you bring much joy to those
you are helping…

Years ago they followed Peter because he was First pope

That’s right, I remember reading where people would try and get his shadow to land
on them, and as many who did, were healed. They practically followed him like a
second Jesus, and additional people followed Paul. Some claimed to follow Apollos.
A visiting priest once said to us, “If the pope runs off with mother theresa tommorow, my faith won’t be shaken. My faith is in Jesus”

That’s a good question. If I had denied Him 3 times and He asked me this, I am sure
that my yes would be very quiet. In fact, I think even without that, it would be quiet.
It would be quiet, but I would look Him in the eyes.

“you will stretch out your arms” signifies Peter’s death by crucifixion because the arms are outspread or stretched out when one is crucified. That the crucifixion would be upside down is not part of what was foretold by Our Lord in the John passage.

I recall being told that there is a tradition (small “t”) which says that when Peter was sentenced to be put to death by crucifixion, he requested to be crucified upside down because he felt he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner as Our Lord.

Well… okay. In that case, they should have reversed the order in the description
to read first someone will dress you, next they will lead you where you don’t want
to go, then you will stretch out your hands…then it would have made sense.

So what do you think then? Do you think he was really crucified upside down?

I think he really was. The testimony goes back to very early times - Tertullian, born approx. 160 AD and Origen born 185 AD.

Like Irenaeus, Tertullian appeals, in his writings against heretics, to the proof afforded by the Apostolic labours of Peter and Paul in Rome of the truth of ecclesiastical tradition. In De Præscriptione 36, he says: “If thou art near Italy, thou hast Rome where authority is ever within reach. How fortunate is this Church for which the Apostles have poured out their whole teaching with their blood, where Peter has emulated the Passion of the Lord, where Paul was crowned with the death of John”. In Scorpiace 15,* he also speaks of Peter’s crucifixion. “The budding faith Nero first made bloody in Rome. There Peter was girded by another, since he was bound to the cross***”.
(Tertullian seems to take the word gird/dress as a reference to ropes used to tie/bind St. Peter to the cross after his arms were extended on the cross.)

And from the same encyclopedia article:
*Concerning the manner of Peter’s death, we possess a tradition — attested to by Tertullian at the end of the second century (see above) and by Origen (in Eusebius, Church History II.1)—that he suffered crucifixion. Origen says: "Peter was crucified at Rome with his head downwards, as he himself had desired to suffer". *

In regards to “lead you where you do not want to go”, I can only speculate. Do you suppose it could be a reference to the Romans intending to crucify him in the normal upright manner - the manner in which Jesus was crucified? And Peter “not wanting to go/die that way”, (unworthy to die in the same way as Our Lord) requested instead to be crucified upside down.
