Six bystanders were killed today when a car bomb exploded near a secondary school for girls in Baghdad and, in a separate attack, one of Iraq’s most prominent female politicians survived an assassination attempt. The attacks came the day after 49 Iraqis died in a series of explosions, suicide attacks and drive-by shootings.
In today’s first incident, residents alerted police after they spotted a suspicious-looking car parked opposite the school for girls which is near Withaq Square, a Christian neighbourhood in the Alwiya district of eastern Baghdad. As bomb disposal experts approached the vehicle at about 10:30am (0730 BST), it exploded and killed six people police said.
