So what do you tell them when they come to your door?

I have done a variety of responses…

JW’s:
The one that had the most profound effect was simply answering the door nude with a bloody meat cleaver in hand. (Waiting for the shower, making stew. College.) They ran. Literally.

In general, I simply ask them to note the sign that says “No Soliciting. No preaching.” Then I point out that I’m unwilling to convert, and would really appreciate being added to their scary people list. If they still haven’t given up, I start showing off my weapons (swords and knives). I’ve never had one stick around after I pick up a rapier. They then don’t come around again until I move.

Mormons:
Mormons are, to be honest, more fun. They’re more prone to ignore the sign, too… mostly due to youth.

Fun things to ask Mormon Missionaries:

“Isn’t coffee banned to you mormons cause of the caffeine?” [Nods] “Want some cocoa?” [Nods] Cup profferred, then label shown to them showing caffeine… and then the article showing that Chocolate is a (very very mild) Narcotic.

“You guys don’t drink alcohol, right?” [nods] “Christ makes wine, and gives it to people to drink. Christ drinks wine, in the Gospels. So what’s wrong with Wine?”

“Are you wearing the famous Mormon Underwear?” [if yes:] “Can I see it?”

“Is the Order of Nephi still serving as the Mormon Inquisition, or is that the order of holy magi? I forget…” (Based upon references in the game “Mage: The Ascencion” and its supplement “Sorcerers”)

“Since Christ promised to be with the Church Always, and he’s the son of God, how come you make him out to be a liar?” [sputtering usually, especially if the cocoa bit worked.] “Well, y’all claim he withdrew his spirit at the end of the Apostolic Era. So, either Christ Lied, or the spirit remained with the church.”

“Do you realize just how [pick one of: Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican] your ward service looks?”

“So, like, y’all claim that the virtuous become like God is now in the afterlife… So if I die and go to heaven, I get to create a universe?”

“If God once was as man is now, and Man shall become like what God is now, what will God be like by then?”

I’ve shaken a few up that way. At least one later joined an RCIA program. Usualy, that gets me off the list for AT LEAST a year.

If they’ve been really obnoxious with a neighbor:

“Стравтвица! У вас ест Книга в Мормонь? Хорошо, спасибо! Я надобнося туалетная бумага!”
(Hi! Do you have a Book of Mormon? Good, thank-you! I need toilet paper.)

In general, tho’, the sign does the trick.

Most J Witnesses are amiable enough, except for the two that told me I was going to go to hell…
They must not have been “good” Jehovah’s Witnesses since the Witnesses don’t believe in hell.

Sometimes I just send them on their way…sometimes I preach…my neighbor said the funniest thing she ever saw was me chasing after the JW door knockers that had invaded the neigborhood…my bible in hand…preach, teaching and exhorting them all the way to their van…they left…and didn’t come back for a LONG time.

In general…unless you know your faith and the bible QUITE WELL…debating with them is NOT a good idea…they take classes on this stuff…weekly…the “Theocratic Ministry School”…where they practice public speaking…debate…and rehearse their sales pitch (which is EXACTLY what it is) using their proof texts.

The Mormons I have a much better time with…they aren’t as pushy. In fact…when I know some Mormon missionaries are living in the area…I watch out for them…make sure they’re eating good…not getting picked on by the local thugs…etc.

I love reading the responses…

I think the holy water stoop, the Theotokras and the crucifix and rosary beads have the desired effect at my place, always offer them a glass of water as it is often hot and humid here.

Use to think up funny and often rather rude comments but the above works well, and I think there is a black mark on my property as I have not been bothered for years…🤷

Hi:

A Catholic layperson who really knows their faith and is well-trained in how to effectively present it to a JW can and will really shake-up a JW. You guys might find the following article interesting and helpful:

The following article was written by a former JW who is now Catholic who has become a very effective Catholic apologist. I thought you guys might find it helpful too:

I had once thought about getting some “book bags” to mount on the porch like animal trophies and scattering various JW tracts and magazines in the yard.

I post in a forum for recovering JW’s and have been told by several that they were met at the door more than once by naked people…it can be an effective tool. Seriously though…if you don’t want to be bothered with them simply contact the local Kingdom Hall and tell them to put you on their DO NOT CALL list…it works…sometimes…though you might get called upon once a year to see if you wish to remain on the DNC list.

met at the door more than once by naked people.
I had one woman answer the door when I was a JW in a see-thru nightie…So yes this does happen.

A friend and I were actually discussing this topic and we concluded that as the Mormons all seem to wear exactly the same outfits (black trousers, white shirt) we would make comments along the line of, ‘oh that’s so cute, does your mother often dress you like twins’ 😃 or perhaps a valley girl impression ‘oh my God, like, how embarassing that you two ended up wearing the same outfit,’ and then tell them a story about how it once happened to me with my best friend which ends with 'and I was like you go change, and she was like, no, you go change, and I was like no, you should go change and like I wouldn’t talk to her for like months because she was such a cow and totally stole my outfit."😃

I surprisingly found an extremely effective way to witness to Mormon Missionaries who came to my door a few months ago. . .

I was bathing twosweetgirls, getting them ready for bed, when the doorbell rang. Answering the door with a toweled baby and seeing that it was Mormon Missionaries I groaned in frustration and shot a prayer heavenward (something like, “oh God, help me get rid of them” or “oh God, why now??”, I don’t remember).

They were really nice and, seeing my full arms, asked if they could come back at a better time. I told them no, this was as good a time as any (with twosweetgirls it’s the truth!), and they proceeded with their pitch. When I told them I was Catholic, they said “Great! Our message of the gospel is for people of all beliefs”. Realizing this was their new tactic, I told them we love Jesus, pray the rosary every day, the chaplet of divine mercy, go see Jesus in the Mass and Eucharist, stuff like that. . . it just came tumbling out!

And then, the neatest thing happened—I don’t remember exactly how it was brought up, but I gave them my heartfelt testimony of my conversion. How the example of nuns and other religious people give up everything to spend their whole lives with Jesus, and what was I not doing, as a Christian, to do the same thing? How everything about the Catholic Church made sense to me logically. How the dumb Protestant misconceptions and predjudices I held against the Catholic Church were completely unfounded.

I realized that what I was saying and how I was saying it was exactly the truth; I wasn’t nervous, wasn’t trying to “get them off my doorstep”, anything like that! It was as if Jesus just stepped into my words and presented them. They listened politely and then asked if there was anything else they could do. I told them yes, that as my brothers in Christ, they could pray for my husband and his job. They said they would and off they went. And you know something? I was strangely hoping—even now—that they’d come back. They haven’t. 😦

Yet. 😉

Before we moved, we had a men’s halfway house next door, and I told the JW’s that yes, I believe in God, and that there’s a halfway house next door that could really benefit from the gospel. 🙂

Haha, wow these are all great storys! Thank you all for your (name removed by moderator)ut!

i remember being 18, loading up a huge cooler full of beer with my friend. they asked us what we thought of war and other topics. i noticed them just staring at the beer. finally i told them we had to leave and they asked if they could come back. i was like “sure, whatever.” and then they gave me their literature. i just smacked myself in the head thinking “what did i get myself into?” anyway, they came back maybe a week or two later and my mom told them to leave me alone and never come back. i saw the main guy at the local gasoline station, since he lived up the street, and he never talked to me after that.
there is someone that keeps on leaving 12 year old AWAKE! in the landry room where i live. i can’t fiqure out who it is though.
my only real experience with them.
but if you really don’t want them to come back i heard, from an ex-JW, to tell them you gave up on jehovah and they will walk away because they think of you as the living dead.

When I was a JW in-training (before being baptized), I was constantly being warned about the horrible “persecution” I was going to face from family, friends, and householders upon whose doors we knocked.

Well, even though I was initially a very aggressive JW evangelist, I was NEVER “persecuted” by anyone. Even the most disinterested people were still very polite and kind. No one EVER “slammed” the door in my face (as I was told to expect), my relatives didn’t turn against me, not one of them, and all my friends (the “worldly” ones) didn’t turn against me either, in fact, they were intrigued. My high school drama teacher DID warn me that I shouldn’t join “that weird religion,” but she remained my friend. Nobody ever turned a garden hose on me or sicked a dog on me, either. It was really rather anticlimactic, now that I think about it, after expecting to be brutalized by “worldlings” and
“goats.”

When I was a single man in my 20s living alone in an apartment, I had a huge poster of the lead singer from Metallica in my living room. He was snarling with water pouring over his face. It was very scary, and I loved it. It kept the hip-hoppers in my apartment place away from me. And it scared away the JW’s as well.

One morning I was sleeping in late and I got a knock on the door. Opening the door with messed hair, rumpled clothes, looking groggy. It turned out to be a couple of older JW ladies looking to evangelize me. And I happened to know them from customers at my work. She started to talk to me, then her eyes hit the poster on the wall behind me. They went wide open, and she started to back away from the door. She made some excuse and said she’d come back later. Which she never did. It wasn’t until I turned around and saw the poster that I realized what had happened. 😃

When they come to your door, tell them: “Come on in you’re just in time for the rosary.”

When they come to your door, tell them: “Come on in you’re just in time for the rosary.”
See, I did that. And much to their credit, they stayed. I let them know that they were welcome in my home to share their faith, and I expected the same reciprocity. They came back next week and asked if I had read the materials they left. I said of course, and had a list of questions. Then, I asked them if they had read my tracts on Marian doctrine. (Of course not.) I reminded them of our agreement and told them how disappointed I was and how they weren’t taking this exchange seriously. Hurt, I asked them to leave. I didn’t understand they were pioneering at the time. I just thought we would open into an exchange of ideas. Hrrumph.

Having had JWs in the family for a long time, we loved to debate back and forth. I ask about Charles Taze Russell, his perjury in court and divorce.

If they bring up the Priest scandals, I read them something from the Silent Lambs website, or this this.

I usually have something printed out from the pro-and-con JW sites here: religioustolerance.org/witness4.htm. But lately, I’ve given it a rest. In fact, I ask them to “shake the dust from their feet” and leave the property.

Two Johova Witnesses rang my son’s doorbell. They told him who they were. My son said he was a devout Catholic, but if they promise not to try to persuade him to change his faith, they were welcome to come in and have a cool drink. (It was a very hot day). They agreed and came into his home. They started talking about different non-religious subjects, including music. It seems that they liked the type of music my son liked, so they spent about 45 minutes drinking cool soda and listening to tapes. When they left my son told them if they were in this area again, and would like to visitt under the same rules, they would be more than welcome.

And guess what, they came one more time , a week later, and enjoyed refreshments and music. That was the last my son seen them. But you know, they were also brothers in Christ and were treated as such. Nothing wrong with that! Nothing wrong with showing hospitality to those who are of different faiths, as long as they don’t try to evangelize their beliefs on others. They ARE our brothers in Christ.

I am so happy to have found this thread! It touches on a subject that I’ve been dealing with for some time, now - the Jehovah’s Witnesses. I have somehow gotten myself involved with having a meeting with a JW on a regular basis. She has been going over a small book that they publish called “What the Bible Really Teaches”. I have repeatedly told her that I have no intention of leaving the Catholic faith, but she keeps coming back. I’m just not the kind of person who can ignore the doorbell or shut the door in someone’s face. And the fact of the matter is that, outside of her beliefs, she is a very sweet person.

Anyway, we’ve had several discussions about infant baptism, Immaculate Mary, and the Trinity. None of which they believe in. The JW’s say that the Bible says we should pray only to God and not to Mary or the saints. They accuse Catholics of worshipping Mary. I explain that we rever Mary, and that there’s a difference. They also accuse Catholics of worshipping relics. I explain that they are merely symbols of what’s important to us. They don’t believe in partaking of the Eucharist, that only those chosen by God are allowed to do so. They celebrate Nisan, a commemoration of the Last Supper, but no one takes the bread and wine unless they feel they are one of the chosen. They think Catholics are wrong in our Eucharistic celebration.

Unfortunately, I am not as versed in Scripture as I would like to be to be able to answer all of their anti-Catholic statements. Which is what brought me to this website. I am learning a lot of what I’ve forgotten from my early days of Catechism classes. Which is actually one of the good things about getting involved with these discussions. I feel more convinced every day that I am in the right faith and that they are the ones who are wrong. I find it interesting that, when confronted with Scriptures that support Catholic belief, they are often at a loss as to how they should reply.

Anyway, I apologize for the length of this post. I am just so gratified to be able to discuss this with others of my faith. I’m hoping that it will strengthen my knowledge of the Scriptures, which will help me in showing the JW’s not just what I believe, but the reasons why.

Well, I’m glad you’re learning much…I don’t think there is anyone here who genuinely considers themselves above learning even the smalles bit of Catholicism they might have been unaware of before! You will find some who love to chew on a bone for days on end 😛 and others who are so full of knowledge that I am sure they come with their very own personalized bookmarks! 😃

Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope the lady in your post comes to realize what she is missing…when she does, she’ll come to you and give you thanks for taking the time to live your faith with her. In the meanwhile, I will pray that Our Father continue to grant you the beautiful graces you seem to possess when talking with her.

When I was younger, my father entertained himself with the JWs by dousing them with the hose (always unintentionally of course) and my mother on the other hand, at the sound of their knock on the door, would always turn to the one closest to her and ask “Who’s That*?!*” Her tone of voice terrified us so that it is remarkable that I can even open the door at all to anyone now. 😊

My bumber sticker lets everyone know we’re PROUD CATHOLICS so it pretty much keeps us JW free…I do love a good debate though…especially the ones where I still have limbs attached afterwards. Welcome and God Bless Us All! 😛

Well, the sad thing is that she used to be a Catholic, but turned her back on the faith. It didn’t fulfill her, I guess. But, every time she tells me that I am most welcome to attend a meeting at her Kingdom Hall, I tell her that she is more than welcome to retun to the Catholic church.

sometimes I wonder if these are the persons Our Lord has placed in our path primarily because they need to connect with someone who IS practicing and living the truth.

I find that sitting in front of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday has been such a saving grace for me…if I may, I’d like to pray for your friend and for you also…we need to take the time to help our brothers and sisters see through the clutter that may be blocking the Truth from them. You are a true friend to her; what a beautiful way to show your love for Christ Jesus…don’t give up on her. 👍

God Bless us all indeed! 🙂
