So who is the whore of babylon?

I was just wondering this today. I wonder, are we even meant to know? Sometimes I think it might be the US, or the Middle East, but I don’t know.

Pagan Rome was Babylon. The “Whore” of Babylon was Jerusalem.

“The kings of the earth have had intercourse with her, and the inhabitants of the earth became drunk on the wine of her harlotry.”

Israel was often a harlot in OT literature.
 
Actually, her name was “Miss Mandy.” She was well known and appreciated by all the Johns of that time, which is why she became so famous and got recognized as “THE” Whore, even though there were many others in town, too.

As it does most people.

The Book of Revelation is a tough book to just pick up and read and expect to understand. A lot of it’s immediate context is aimed at the original hearers, and it presumes a good familiarization with current events and recent history of the time and place, as well as the Old Testament, especially the prophets Daniel and Ezekiel. If you try to interpret yourself without this context (or ask the opinion of folks on this thread, many of whom LOVE this speculative stuff about the Whore of Babylon and the Anti-Christ), you’ll risk falling into the ignorant speculation many throughout the centuries and especially in the last 200 years have made and are making.

If you are truly interested in studying the Book of Revelation in a serious and not speculative way, I recommend you pick up a couple of the great Catholic commentaries and Bible studies that are now available. The best way to tell a counterfiet, is to study the real thing, and there’s no way to do it except by rolling up your sleeves and seriously pursuing it. Here are a few suggestions:

In David Currie’s book “Rapture,” he explains that the whore of Babylon is in fact Jerusalem. It is the city of seven hills. Now, Rome also has seven hills, but a Jew in the middle east probably wouldn’t have known that or cared. In Josephus’s writings, all of the names of the hills are listed. So it is probably safe to say that Jews knew Jerusalem as the City of Seven Hills.

Also, Jerusalem manipulated Rome into helping it destroy the Christian population which later backfired and Rome came and destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD, just as described in Revelation.

I highly recommend David Currie. He is very well read and even more thorough.
 
Who? good question. The key to knowing ‘who’ is the descriptive phrase " all the blood ever shed on earth is on her hands" Jesus say’s this to the leaders of Jerusalem. It’s a phrase that describes her several times in Scripture.
The earth opened it’s mouth to receive that blood and it cries out to God for justice. “Where is your brother Abel?” " What have you done?" " 'Hear your brother’s blood that cries out to me from the ground that has opened it’s mouth to receive it." "On her hands is all the blood ever shed on earth.

Eve is the original worshipper of created things as indicated in what she said when she gave birth to the first born of her sinfull womb. ‘I have got me a man". She see’s herself as the generative power of human life. She acknowledges God as a help. " with the help of Yahweh’ Where is Adam in this picture?

It is during this period she is the woman that say’s’ I am queen on my throne and am no widow and not in mourning’. ( not in mouning means that she is not barren).

She say’s nothing when Abel is born because there is no change in her view of her own meaning as a mother. But, when all the blood ever shed on earth cried out to God Eve heard it and she plumped the depths of maternal responsibility and grief.

How long did she mourn? How long was she barren?

It is when Seth is born that we see she has been renewed. She say’s " God has granted" she places God first, ‘another offspring’ she doesn’t refer to Seth as ‘man’ but as a woman who has come to know her maternal role calls him ‘offspring’. She doesn’t even say ’ granted me another’ but God has granted another. Pride comes before the fall and it was the fall of her generation of man in Cain that elevated her to know her true place. Because it must have been a great gift from God to her " because she ends her statement describing the birth of Seth by acknowledging that he is a replacement, a new first born son, another chance.

In this light the most revealing thing about Eve’s state in this story is that the new first fruit of her womb is also the first born in the image of his father. Adam is recognized as the authentic generative power of procreation on earth. Son of Adam Son of God

Cain becomes an anti-type of Adam with a heart distorted by that unholy maternal baggage and generates the culture of death. A matriarchy that will propogate and establish peoples who worship the power of fertility as the creative force of life and practice the idolatry the prophets would refer to as ‘acting the whore’

and the story today is buried within the psyche of man and manifests in a mostly unconscious worship of the power of fertility as the generative power of human life and meaning. But not as buried as it was in the beginning, more like it was a millenia later.

In Adam and Eve is the whole journey. From the whore that rides the beast to the People of God who’s hidden lives reveal God’s Word.

Yes. On her hands is all the blood ever shed on earth. I’m sorry about writing in such a fragmented way. There is alot between the lines. Perhaps too much. If what I wrote raises questions I’ll be glad to explain.

Funny, isn’t it, that seemingly the whole world hates the Catholic Church? “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first” (John 15:18). Lucifer (“light”-HA!) even has Christians hating other Christians.

Especially since St Paul describes the religion she generates as something hidden. The irony is that’s how most of those who accuse the Catholic church describe their view of the true church, as a hidden reality. The religion of idolatry they think is something as visible as the Catholic church. Manoman what a great distraction he’s made of the church in their minds. I guess something Paul say’s is hidden until the end events only applies if you aren’t part of the ‘in’ crowd. :rolleyes:

Why would the seven churches in Rev. 2 & 3, or anyone else in the first century AD, be interested in the US ? Or the Papacy, for that matter ? 🙂​

John was not writing a “Letter to the Washingtonians” - he was writing to & for people of his own time. The book is not an “anticipated history”, of the Church or anything else.

Which will not stop websites such as these attracting the gullible:

    We have no right to assume that because we are interested in X, Y & Z, people livings 1900 years ago also were. They were not interested in the USA, or the Papacy, or Napoleon, or Hitler, or Saddam, or [fill in space] - how could they have been ?
