So why do you think we have so many scandals in the Catholic Church?

Good post Matt. Question: The CC is suppose to be a picture of Jesus, What picture do most people unfortunally see when all this is happening?
**The Church is a true picture of Jesus, a picture Jesus painted Himself!

His Apostles all failed but Jesus accepted their repentance (except Judas who did not repent).

"Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." (Mt 9:13)

I am afraid tweetymom with this all happening many unfortunately may see a picture of Satan superimposed over top of the picture of Jesus. Or at the very least, a faded, stained portrait of Jesus weeping. If only those in charge of protecting the portrait in the gallery had been less careless with the portrait, this could have been avoided.

I think as followers of Christ we should quit pointing fingures between each other and trying figure out who is better among us. I don’t care if it was a protestant, Lutheran, catholic, or methodist, etc…

Scripture calls us to be above reproach so when we are accused of something we can stand in court not guilty. Here lies the problem. For when one leader of any christian body falls, it becomes a stain upon us all, and our witness to the world becomes null and void.

Why would anyone including satan try to divide the Church if even Christ said that evil will not prevail against his Church, so why even bother going against Christ?

Only an idiot would try to disprove the Catholic faith or Christs Church. Didn’t the bible specifically say that evil will not prevail against the Church, so why even bother trying?

Also, if there are more Catholics then anything else today, then wouldn’t just that fact lead people to believe that the Church will not fail despite of anyone’s efforts? There are many denominations out their all claiming false truths about the Catholic faith, but yet they only have maybe a few million in their denomination? Anyone else see something wrong with this?

Simply because Holy Scripture tells us that there will be scandals within the only Church which Jesus Christ founded. If there were no scandals, then Holy Scripture would be in error, would it not? So how can anyone become upset when scandals do arise within the Church?

“Woe to the world because of scandals! For it must needs be that scandals come, but woe to the man through whom scandal does come!”
Matthew 18:7
And He said to His disciples, “It is impossible that scandals should not come; but woe to him through whom they come.”
Luke 17:1"

In the time that Jesus walked the earth, there was the greatest human scandalizer of all time, Judas. Judas was one of twelve chosen by Jesus Christ Himself, so what was the scandal rate among Christ’s closest disciples? It was about 8 1/2 %.

“From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and men of violence take it by force.”
Matthew 11:12

“Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.”
Luke 6:26"

“Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Matthew 5:11-12 Cathkoic treasure chest
The Catholic Church is in turmoil??? This must be a first.

U really don’t think there are any idiots out there trying to disprove the CC. Every Church has faults. The secret is to stand up to them, and then do something about them

Amen Brother.

The reason there are scandals in the Church is due to one and only one reason: the church is made up of sinners. The church has as its members perverts, theives, murderers, gossips, racists, republicans, former satanists (of which I am one) and every other kind of scumbag you can think of. With all of these repentant people who have done such wicked things there is bound to be some relapse and it is the duty of the Church to both forgive and take steps to ensure it does not happen again whether that be turning the perpatrater over to civil law enforcment or excommunicating them until the have done proper pentance. history has showen that exept for disaster relife the wheels of the church move very slowly and the scandals that have come up over recent years is something that the church has not really ever had to deal with, it is natural that mistakes will be made but that we learn from them and never repeat them is the only way we will get through theis difficult time.

A broadbrush or an insult?

There wouldn’t be so many scandals if the CC had of faced them when they happened instead of hiding,

I believe it is because when they found about individual sex abuse Priests, some Bishops or other Priests wanted to be compassionate and so they sought therapy for them, trying to ‘‘cure’’ them instead of reporting them, and that’s how the cover up started. They didn’t learn from repeat offenders and then it became public. The recent cases now emerging in Austria and Germany, like those that have shocked the American, Canadian, Irish and Australian churches, all date back 20, 30 and even 50 years. They are not repeatable. There are now child protection systems in place in Churches which have been judged by outside experts to be working well. A little unrelated, but I have just been reading about sex abuses cases in the Orthodox Church, Jewish community, Mosques and Anglican Church. People, aka. the media need to stop making out like this a Catholic problem. Do a little research, it most certainly isn’t.

There are so many scandals in the church because we are in Satan’s hour…and we lay people were exhorted over and over again to pray for our priests…but instead so many followed the pleasures of the world…

So Benedict made this year the year of the priest…let us pray for them to be protected and nurtured in Mary’s Immaculate Heart…and pray and do penance for them.

Bill,

I suspect that, because there are so many more Catholics, there are more opportunities for scandal to arise. I doubt that Catholics are any more inclined to scandalous behavior than other Christians.
Most of the scandals involve priests and religious. In the past, up to recently, the position of the priesthood and men in religious life was unexamined, unsupervised from outside and unassailable. In particular, priests ruled. No one would believe a child who dared to allege improprieties by a priest.

The scandals, mainly involving pedophilia, were not rare in Ireland, and not even in the US. And they are expecially damaging to the developing child. So they are truly heinous. Thus I absolutely reject excuses that ‘everyone sins’–‘these crimes are so rare’=–they weren’t rare and these crimes involve some of the worst an individual can commit.

I apologize if I seemed to be excusing the behavior of those who abused children. That was not my intent at all. I was merely saying that because the Catholic Church is so large there were and are more opportunities for abuse to occur. That in no way excuses criminal behavior. I share your opinion that these are particularly heinous crimes.

Likewise, the sex abuse in the public schools is 100 times that of the Church.

And the abuse within members of international secular society that promotes sex enslavement of children and women, the American porn industry and its connection with public organizations promoting sex for children, aka Planned Parenthood and the Girl Scouts, these are calling down God’s justice.

Perhaps we need to focus on defending and restoring the innocence of children and our teens.

Proallen, Have you been a bigot all you life or did you just learn to be one, have a great day
Bill, I have dealt with proallen’s bigoted rants on another thread, and his whole agenda is to use any and all means to attack the Catholic Church. I do not know how many times we as Catholics had decried and denounced the pedophile/predator priests, the cover-ups, and the mishandling of the whole issue, and the fact that we have taken steps to eradicate them from the priesthood, but that is not good enough for him and his ilk. It is just a holier than thou mind set.

So let’s look at some data. For the full report go HERE

The data on the Protestant clergy tend to focus on sexual abuse in general, not on sexual abuse of children. Thus, strict comparisons cannot always be made. But there are some comparative data available on the subject of child sexual molestation, and what has been reported is quite revealing.

In a 1984 survey, 38.6 percent of ministers reported sexual contact with a church member, and 76 percent knew of another minister who had had sexual intercourse with a parishioner. In the same year, a Fuller Seminary survey of 1,200 ministers found that 20 percent of theologically “conservative” pastors admitted to some sexual contact outside of marriage with a church member. The figure jumped to over 40 percent for “moderates”; 50 percent of “liberal” pastors confessed to similar behavior.

In 1990, in a study by the Park Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith and Ethics in Chicago, it was learned that 10 percent of ministers said they had had an affair with a parishioner and about 25 percent admitted some sexual contact with a parishioner. Two years later, a survey by Leadership magazine found that 37 percent of ministers confessed to having been involved in “inappropriate sexual behavior” with a parishioner.

In a 1993 survey by the Journal of Pastoral Care, 14 percent of Southern Baptist ministers said they had engaged in “inappropriate sexual behavior,” and 70 percent said they knew a minister who had had such contact with a parishioner. Joe E. Trull is co-author of the 1993 book, Ministerial Ethics, and he found that “from 30 to 35 percent of ministers of all denominations admit to having sexual relationships—from inappropriate touching to sexual intercourse—outside of marriage.”

According to a 2000 report to the Baptist General Convention in Texas, “The incidence of sexual abuse by clergy has reached ‘horrific proportions.’” It noted that in studies done in the 1980s, 12 percent of ministers had “engaged in sexual intercourse with members” and nearly 40 percent had “acknowledged sexually inappropriate behavior.” The report concluded that “The disturbing aspect of all research is that the rate of incidence for clergy exceeds the client-professional rate for physicians and psychologists.” Regarding pornography and sexual addiction, a national survey disclosed that about 20 percent of all ministers are involved in the behavior.

In the spring of 2002, when the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church was receiving unprecedented attention, the Christian Science Monitor reported on the results of national surveys by Christian Ministry Resources. The conclusion: “Despite headlines focusing on the priest pedophile problem in the Roman Catholic Church, most American churches being hit with child sexual-abuse allegations are Protestant, and most of the alleged abusers are not clergy or staff, but church volunteers.”

Finally, in the authoritative work by Penn State professor Philip Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests, it was determined that between .2 and 1.7 percent of priests are pedophiles. The figure among the Protestant clergy ranges between 2 and 3 percent.
