What is meant when it is said that the Roman Liturgy is supposed to have a somber, solemn character?
Thanks for anything.🙂

Who said that? and have you confused sobriety with solemnity? Sobriety means they’re not drunk. It’s the least we can ask, no?

I believe it is sobriety and solemnity. Has not sobriety have more than one meaning?

What do you think it means?

Solemn-- reverent, holy, serious

The Mass is solemn because we enter in to the Pascal Mystery.

Wouldn’t clapping be okay even though its solemn?

If you’re talking historically- it is because the Roman liturgy was inherited the legal character of the ancient Romans, Everything was siple, straightforward and dingified. It was low of the cultus of saints, short and to the point in word and ceremonial, etc. If you draw the comparison to one of the liturgies of the East you’ll see the difference. They tend to be wordier, have more ceremonial, frequently mention the Mother of God and the saints, etc. When the Roman liturgy was fused with the Gallician ones- it did take on some of their characteristics including wordier prayers and more ceremonial. But it still remained a bit on the “sober” scale

I guess that answers everything.🙂

Laudatur Iesus Christus.

The Holy Spirit and the conciliar fathers of Trent taught: “those who are present shall have first shown, by their decently composed outward appearance, that they are there not in body only, but also in mind and devout affection of heart. They shall also banish from churches all those kinds of music, in which, whether by the organ, or in the singing, there is mixed up any thing lascivious or impure; as also all secular actions; vain and therefore profane conversations, all walking about, noise, and clamour, that so the house of God may be seen to be, and may be called, truly a house of prayer.” Decree Concerning the Things To Be Observed and To Be Avoided in the Celebration of Mass, Council of Trent, Session 22 (A.D. 1562)(Emphasis added.).

I find this hard to reconcile with “clapping” in the Church and especially during the Mass.

I am not aware of anything in the teachings or rulings of subsequent Oecumenical Councils or Magisterial documents that would contradict, countermand, or rescind this teaching.

I would appreciate any further information on this point.

Spiritus Sapientiae nobiscum.

I should forward this to the church I’ve been attending. You’d think this was the bleachers at a ballpark. Everyone chattering before Mass, moving around. I was always taught to be reverent most especially because the Blessed Sacrament was there.
