I’m always mixed about this stuff. I thought the whole point of the Olympics was to compete without the politics. The games are not meant to be affected by the real conflicts between nations. I suppose the Munich Olympics changed that considerably.

Our athletes have sacrificed so much, their families as well, that I want to support them aby watching, but I also am burned out on all this. Haven’t decided yet whether to turn it on or not.
Tune in! The ceremonies are awesome and the spirit of the athletes is contagious.

Best opening ceremony.

Hands down.

I thought Beijing’s was outstanding and nothing would top it. I was wrong.

You go Russia!

I thought that little girl flying high above the sets was fantastic, although, I would never allow my child to attempt this. They reported she broke an arm some time ago in practice:(

You did notice that one of the snowflakes did not morph into an olympics ring? I know it was just a glitch, but it was reported that what the Russian people were shown on their TV, was a recording of the “perfect” practice pre-recorded earlier.

One of the best opening acts. Caucasian approved. Go Mother Bear!

It was a great olympics opening! Kudos to Russia.

Unfortunately, for some, the headline would be about the olympic ring glitch.

I doubt that. Do you have the report?

You know this olympics is really shedding a light on just how much propaganda our own media engages in. To hear them tell it it is 1980 and the Russians are landing in colorado. I am getting tired of this “third world” schtick that we are being fed.

No, I just made it up:p

The opening ceremonies were very impressive. maybe the best ever, but there were two big disappointments. First, I saw nothing at all regarding the role of Christianity in the telling of Russia’s history. Second, having the Russian team enter the stadium to the music of the homosexual activist duo Tatu, was thoroughly offensive. Other than that, I really enjoyed things.

Best Team Outfits. Spain
Worst Team Outfits. Germany
Oddest Team Outfits. Taiwan followed by Kyrgyzstan
Venezuela and Kazakhstan sounded on TV like they received the loudest ovations of visiting nations, with the US and Canada also receiving good receptions. All for now.

I enjoyed CBC coverage of the opening ceremonies more than NBC’s. The anchors (what are they called?) didn’t talk over the announcement of the countries and the information in their commentary was more interesting and relevant to the Games or point out that the athletes from Israel and Iran were next to each other in order and it’s hard to keep politics out of the Olympics. Well, yeah, if you keep yakking about it.

And they didn’t keep reminding us that we were being presented with an “idealistic” image of Russia like NBC mentioned a number of times. No, really? Because that’s what the world wants to see; people starving under Stalin and the Cold War portrayed by ballerinas.

At least NBC isn’t dropping Russian words. Yet. I’m waiting for the first “spasibo” uttered by NBC.

Well, they really couldn’t tell it like it really WAS!

And what kind of message were they trying to send with the homosexual musicians at the entrance of the Russian athletes? I really don’t get that:confused:

Tatu aren’t really lesbians and it was a Daft Punk :cool: version of the song and I read that it was used because it was the only pop song by a Russian artist that might have been heard outside of Russia.

Thanks. That makes sense now:thumbsup:

hmmmmmm… i recorded the opening ceremonies because i had to work this evening, but i am really not that impressed with what i have seen. it started out ok, but then went downhill as far as i am concerned. unless there is more after the parade of nations. after the teams march in, is there more to the opening ceremonies?

okay, i watched more after the parade of the athletes and it was very good. it makes me want to read books now like war and peace and anna karenina and crime and punishment and the brothers karasmokov (i think i spelled that wrong). i think russian history is fascinating.

it looks like there is still more! i am really impressed now.

I’ve got a brother in law who competed in the 1980’s Olympics in Moscow. The then Prime Minister offered our Olympic competitors a certain amount of money ($5000?) not to compete. The brother in law refused. In his own words he’d trained too hard and too long for a bunch of politicians to stuff it up.

While I haven’t got much time for all the politicking going on about the Sochi Olympics by the Western media, I do have a bit of an uneasy feeling about it.

I hope nothing happens to upset it.
