Why is it that the only tiem one is working hard is hwne they are working according to your standards?
Why is it that the only time one is working hard is when they are working according to your standards? šŸ˜‰
One can work quite hard during 40 hours on the job and still have other things necessary to get done. We shouldn’t all have to conform to this 80 hour work ethic. If jobs paid decently 40 hours would be plenty enough to cover expenses and still invest for prosperity.
Ah, but the guy who created those jobs probably had to work 80 hours a week for years to get his going.

My dad only worked a 40 hour week to raise 5 children. He had to tend to repairs on the house and keep the lawn as well until we could do it by which time we were almost off to college and then he was retiring. How could he have possibly worked your schedule and still get all the other work done? And I don’t for one second believe that the upper echelon guy creating those low paying jobs is working 80 hours. He’s probably spending time in his yacht getting prosperous off of the work of those below him. It is all a pyramid scheme. Make the guys below work at ridiculously low wages while they sit back and enjoy life.

If the upper echelon guy’s job is that easy, why can’t you do it? Just start a business, put in 20 hours a week, and spend the rest on your yacht.

Businesses fail sometimes, in case you haven’t noticed. So most have to work wage jobs and to insist that they work more than 40 hours is just plain obtuse. I’m getting really tired of thesed efinitions of sloth thrown from the conservatives on these forums. And how often does the guy who works 80 hours to start up his business wind up with a divorce on his hands because he paid no attention to the family?

Remember, the first concern for conservatives is the god Mammon. Am I calling it idolatry? You’re darn right I am! I can’t not call it as I see it.

Remember, people don’t regret working more at work as they are dying (if they do, they’re sick). They almost always regret not spending enough time with their loved ones.

What’s so interesting is that it comes from a protestant mindset. They don’t call it the ā€œChristian work ethic.ā€ They certainly don’t call it the ā€œCatholic work ethic.ā€ They call it the ā€œPROTESTANT work ethic.ā€ I wonder why?

There have been times when I’ve had to confess not doing work on work time and my priest didn’t scold me for being a lazy, good fer nothin’ slovenly liberal (like I’m sure some would here), but he reminded me of the simple Catholic ideal of not stealing time from one’s boss. He has a good Catholic mindset.

Right now, I’m working on getting my college education (which adds about 5 hours of class time and about 10 hours of study time to my life). There are several reasons I am doing this…partly because of money (I wouldn’t mind being more comfortable in terms of having financial breathing room, but it’s not the be all, end all…it’s a means), but mostly because of the fact that I really enjoy what my major (Civil Engineering) will allow me to do once I have competed it (design highways).

But I digress.

Good to have you as a friend on these forums. I wish you good fortune in your educational endeavors.

People sometimes have heart attacks and drop dead, in case you haven’t noticed.

What’s that got to do with the price of eggs?

Very infrequently. Read The Millionaire Next Door, which was a detailed study of millionaires. The average millionaire:
  1. Is married and never divorced.
  2. He and his wife still live in their original home (having long ago paid off their 30-year mortgage.O)
  3. Typically wears a work shirt with his name above the pocket.
  4. Is most likely to drive a Ford 150 pickup truck, with the name of his business on the door.

And my dad did all that, except for the Ford:p while only working 40 hours on the job. Why can’t we keep jobs like his around that pay enough to raise a family without the requirement to work more just to be considered as not being slothful?

And he was able to leave enough to support his son, who is only able to work 20 hours a week?

Yes. Are you jealous? I can only work a low stress 20 hour a week job at most due to a disability. He invested well for an emergency such as this but even he agreed that we would still need social security and medicare there for those such as me. Because the family can’t possibly be expected to handle the whole burden and, unlike what some here believe, we are not lazy. We are deserving of assistance.

Well, good for your father. But did he have his own business? How many people did he employ?

What does that have to do with the price of eggs? Is he only important in your eyes if he ran his own business? He still worked hard and invested his after tax income to make more. Practically just as difficult.

Apparently we are starting to determine that the only way to be successful in life is run your own business. Hogwash.

It’s one thing to be the hired hand, working 40 hours a week, and another to be the guy who saved the money, bought the farm, went deep into debt to build the chickenhouses, and who has the risk hanging over him, day after day – and works from can see to can’t see to keep the farm going.

Without that guy, the hired hand would have no job.

Yep – but it was someone else who created the job he worked at.

And the same could be said in reverse. If there were no hired hands the business owner would have to do all the work himself with no time to rest. Noone is more important than anyone else but some don’t understand that concept. We all serve different functions.

Which is neither here nor there. The point is, it is the hard worker, the risk taker, who creates the jobs.

Gee my dad was conservative but he didn’t complain half as much as you conservatives here do. You should all learn a lesson from the way he lived his life. He worked hard at a 40 hour a week job. He invested the leftover income to send five kids to college, buy them cars, pay off the mortgage and still spend quality time with his family along the way. You don’t have to work your b**t off just to succeed. He was a success and I defy any of you to say he wasn’t. In fact I would say his numberone concern being the family and not the money made him a better success than most.

So what? You are still implying that my dad was not a hard worker because he didn’t run his own business and create jobs. You are so wrong, Vern. The guy at the bottom often works just as hard as the guy at the top. It’s just that as the pyramid scheme stays in place the guy at the bottom is working so hard that he doesn’t have time to start his own business.

Gee my dad was conservative but he didn’t complain half as much as you conservatives here do.
What am I complaining about? I’m not the one who says there isn’t a government program designed to help me, regardless of how it would affect others or the nation.

I don’t!?!?

How much time did your dad spend in jungles, swamps, and mountains? How often was he wounded or injured in the course of his work?
He was a success and I defy any of you to say he wasn’t. In fact I would say his numberone concern being the family and not the money made him a better success than most.
Now, you see, you want to make this personal. I don’t attack your mother, your father, your brothers and sisters, or you.

I simply make the point that it is the hardest workers amongst us who create the jobs the rest of us need to make a living. If everyone only worked 40 hours a week, who would create the jobs?

And I haven’t attacked you. Now who is taking it personal. But again my dad did all those things on a job without creating other jobs. You place some more importance on the guy who creates the jobs while I put us on an equal playing field. My dad WAS one of the hardest working among us that you keep on denying yet he never created one job. He did create wealth by investing his income.
