While I feel somewhat obligated to be a Good Samritan, I am leery of my government confiscating taxes for another jobs program.
That being said, I still think our current system is worse. Legal, insurance, accounting and adminstration costs bloat the cost of healthcare. Simple procedures further are more costly simply because of cost shifting by providers. It is easier to collect 1,000 $1000 procedures than 2 500,000 procedures. Write-offs, bad debts, collection fees all further bloat the system.
We have a population of fat Americans who are not physically fit, eat terrible, get no exercise, watch tv and play video games. How many teens today can do 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups and even one pull-up? Diet cokes, pizza, hot dogs, doritos, where is the nutrition?
We have a government that subsidizes tobacco farmers? Why but to create a commodity to tax? We have governments that provide lotteries, allow business to “entertain customers” and other endless lists of tax preferences?
We are lazy and gettting lazier every day, fatter every day and dumber. Math and science scores way down. But when we get to the point where corporate healthcare just is not affordable anymore and we have to give it to our ridiculous government?
I say let’s all do a rosary every day for healthcare reform not only the indegent but top shelf quality care at Wal-mart pricing and excellent delivery. Give scholarships to students in science in medicine so when they come out of medical school they don’t come out with 200,000 worth of student loans. Give scholarships to students that pass minimum physical fitness tests. Give scholarships to students that do x amount of volunteer work on an ongoing basis. Invest in the health and general fitness of young people.
Other areas of legal reform would be a “get out of malpractice card” to doctors. One bad case should not put a doctor out of business with insurance premiums.
Tax reform should include some sort of medical provider benefit. Pro-bono type medical assistance funds, where the fortunate like me can give directly to local providers in my neighborhood.
But mostly I think the Good Samaritan is the best example. We all should go out of our way to help, do volunteer work, make a difference, give a little. Heal the sick, feed the hungry, bury the dead.
