Catherine Heinhold, a campus minister and director of the Catholic retreat program at Georgetown, said many students believe “it is more important to serve the poor than to go to Mass” but they also feel “a very real, deep desire to grow in their faith and spirituality.”
“They respond well to outreach,” she said, "and they are really hungry for God."
So,… they have a hunger for God, but won’t eat Of God?
Hmmm,… sounds like someone needs to inform these “young people” about the mechanics of getting nourishment.
I suppose there might be a stray from the materialism to look for something new in spiritualism. If that is found empty, there might be a return to materialism, but hopefully they’ll come to the balance of keeping their spiritually meeting at the materialism at the Mass.
I’m wondering if the sons and daughters of the those that grew up with the fashion to rebel against authority, might be open to a guiding authority. Maybe not, but their children might.
I think it depends on whose kids are being interviewed. The children of liberal Catholics will respond with a Peace Corps mentality while children of orthodox Catholics will break for the Sacraments , Mass and traditional faith markers. Both are needed to Catholic identity, but liberals always risk diluting the power of God, and lose the foundational purpose of faith.
