Sounds like he wants to justify homosexual behavior…🤷
It’s nothing new. There have been people through the ages twisting Scripture to justify their particular sins. I’m sure he read the work of a homosexual apologists who are doing their best to prove that homosexual acts are no problem. I mean why pay any attention to both Christian and Jewish traditions, Natural Law and simple reason?

Obviously there has got to be some reason why he is adamant that homosexuality plays no role in the Sodom and Gommorah event…

Maybe he just wants to point out that somewhere along the line, some people started to associate the destruction of sodom and gomorrah with the notion that God hates gays. And wants to point out that in fact God destroyed those cities for other sins.

That would be my guess. I’m sure he realizes that homosexuality is condemned for reasons other than the Genesis story of sodom.

Homosexuality is far worse for society than say, eating an apple.

The biggest misconception is that homosexuality is so grave while other sexual sins pale in comparison. Fornication, adultery, pornography and any use of sex outside the boundaries of marriage between a man and a woman are condemned and equally offensive to God. Why homosexuality has a greater sin connotation is beyond me and why anyone would want to p(name removed by moderator)oint one biblical story as condoning any devious sexual behavior is beyond me…teachccd

I agree. We are looking for a place in hell that’s not quite as hot when we resort to finger pointing.

👍 I’ve often wondered that. I thing the abuse of one’s spiritual faculties is - all things being equal - far worse than any sexual sin; it’s astonishing that the Church says lies can be venial, while being so “hung up” on sexual sins; which are all mortal, IIRC.

To answer the question - maybe as (among other reasons):
  • It’s relatively unusual - unlike adultery. So it’s easier to hate “queers” - hating adulterers is dangerous, because adultery is the kind of thing anyone is capable of; even oneself. It is difficult to despise people in a group of which one is one is a member. So the luxury of despising members of a group one is not in, is easier to lose if one condemns adulterers. It’s safer to hate the “pooves”
  • It’s relatively rare, yet still sexual - so it has a high "“yuck factor”: if sex is nasty, that kind must be really disgusting
  • Prurient curiosity & hypocrisy & self-righteousness are a winning combination - & they can easily look like piety.
  • Historically, sex has long been viewed as dirty, debasing, something to keep from, sinful in itself. So that kind of thing must be far worse, “that unspeakable crime” as a 16th-century Bull calls it. And the Bible seems to show a city being destroyed for that very thing, by a Divine judgement. From that it is a short step to burning homosexuals - especially when homosexuality can be interpreted as a heresy. After all, Christians are not at liberty to differ from God, even if they might like to. What He hates & punishes with death, they must.
  • What the OP said 🙂

I agree with the rest of you that homosexual acts are no more sinful than other sexual sins. I think the reason there is so much “focus” on it is twofold.
  1. There are a lot of efforts globally right now for gay marriage. While sexual sins are equally grievous, making relationships based on homosexuality equivalent to a heterosexual marriage is a bigger deal.
  2. Unfortunately, other sexual sins (masturbation, heterosexual sodomy, fornication, etc.) have become acceptable by society. They were outrages at one time, and they still bother some of us…but we are just “nutters.” Homosexuality is headed in the same direction, so the outcry against it has increased.

Again, I will ask: What is the original Greek and Hebrew word for sodomite?

You are looking for the Greek and Hebrew word for one who commits sodomy? Usually when I try to learn a language I start with words like, “Hello, my name is Bob.” “What is your name?” or maybe even " Where is the restroom?" But if you want to start your Greek lesson with , “One who engages in anal intercourse.” well, so be it…

Again, I will ask: What is the original Greek and Hebrew word for sodomite?
The nglish edictionary says that sodomite can mean someone who lived in the area of Sodom and Gomorrah, or someone who engages in sodomy. Why don’t you tell us the Greek words, I sure don’t know, but I’m curious about it now and would like to know the definitions and what you conclude from them.

Again, I will ask: What is the original Greek and Hebrew word for sodomite?
It’s an incredibly boring question. You may think you are being clever in your approach, but it doesn’t make for interesting dialogue. If you have a point, then make it. People may be interested in debating you, or they may just agree with you.

Here’s another reason you forgot:

The marital act, as designed by God, places the seeds of new life into a nourishing place designed to allow life to begin and for that life to be sustained.

The act of sodomy, instead, puts the seeds of new life into a terrible place designed for the elimination of waste.

The two actions are analgous to the question:
Will I put my baby into a warm safe crib, or into a sewer?

So, the act of sodomy is linked by analogy, to the desecration and destruction of innocent life.

So based on the responses to that question, is the final analysis that there is no original Greek and Hebrew word within scripture for the word “sodomite”?

There isn’t? I’m not surprised, I didn’t even think it was an English word, to be honest.

(And despite the comment made by one of the posters in reference to me trying to be clever. That isn’t my intent. These are honest questions that deserve to be asked, that’s all.)
