Aw! Now I understand what you were writing. It makes so much sense. We are so use to this being shoved down our throats it is hard to realize that other times would not have the mind set or as you stated concept of this sin as being “idenity”.
Except I am not confusing attraction with sin.
Your statement did, though you may not have intended it to: “this sin as being ‘idenity’.”
Nowhere do I refer to attraction. Sin is only involved with the act of homosexuality so when I said sin I thought it would be obvious that it was the act and not the attraction. I think you read more into what I wrote than was there.

You misrepresented what I posted. Than you made a comment as if tthat misrepresentaion is what I wrote.
Maybe we are misunderstanding each other, because I don’t recall strawman-ing you.

I said:
Why are you minimizing the 3 other things that you, yourself quoted in the commentary which are not homosexuality?
Isaiah: social justice
Ezekiel: lack of concern for the poor
Jeremiah: general morality
Because the commentary noted homosexuality plus those three things, but you kept talking about homosexuality only.

Sorry if I misunderstand you. Explain? 🤷

I have talked about homsexuality but hardly only.
Much of what you say is true. It is a much better explanation than " the sin of Sodom & Gommorah was inhospitality."

However, as good as your explanation is it is not definitive on what the sin was that was so grievous that God destroyed them. I tend to side with Jeremiah others may side with the traditional view.
The sin is not mentioned. The Talmud is only an opinion that has no authority. It was written sometime between the 3rd and 5th century. Of course all you have to do is provide the scripture that says it was inhospitality.

In other words, this is just another interpretation.

There is Scripture that address this which seems to have been ignored.
Again from footnotes

That they wanted to commit homosexual acts on the angels is undeniable hence we have the word sodomy. Jeremiah saw it as general immorality of which homosexuality was part of it.
Show me the sripture that is very specific what their sin was. The footnote from the NAB shows three scriptures with three different reasons.
I have consistently pointed out that scripture does not mention what the sin was that was so great that God destroyed them. I sided with Jeremiah who thought it was a general immorality. I disagree with the silly hospitality as God was destroying them before the incident with the Angels.
That Sodom practice homosexuality is obvious but it does not say that it was THE reason.

I didn’t ignore Isaiah who thought it was a lack of social justice or Ezekiel who described it as a disregard for the poor as I believe that Jeremiah’s reason covers them both.

Grace & Peace!

What’s being overlooked here is that what the Sodomites were interested in doing to the strangers in their midst was not some mutual sexual pleasure seeking. This wasn’t about the Sodomites wanting to “sleep with” the strangers. This was about violent gang rape. The modern correlative to the sin of Sodom is not so much a same-sex couple as it is Abu Ghraib or the treatment of Abner Louima (sodomized with a broomstick by NYPD officers in 1997) or the relatively more common sexually-inflected hazing rituals in which some fraternities and groups of “good old boys” engage which establish dominance and “authority” through sexual humiliation and violence. Keep in mind that there is the suggestion that the people gathered at the door of Lot’s home were not just the males, but all the people of Sodom, young and old. Keep in mind, too, that Lot must have had good reason to believe that his virgin daughters would have satisfied the wickedness of the crowd, otherwise he wouldn’t have offered them. Keep in mind that the way in the people of Sodom characterize what they are planning to do with the strangers is in terms of abuse (“we will deal worse with you than with them” doesn’t suggest they had anything pleasant in mind for the strangers). Same-sex attraction as we understand it is not on the Sodomites’ collective mind. But sexual violence certainly is.

That’s not to say that the Bible has anything good to say about same-sex (particularly penetrative) sexual activity. But it is to say that the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is not about the dangers of homosexuality, let alone same-sex attraction, as we understand such things today. The story is about human sexual violence and humiliation.

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,141

It was one sin they were guilty of.

It was one sin they were guilty of.
Yes, one of many. But, none were found ‘righteous’, Not One, per scripture. 100% were guilty. And, it was the abomination sin, of their many, that caused God to rain down fire/brimstone upon them …their intent to commit Sodomy, forcibly, against Guests of Lot.
At this point, the Guests intervened …and ordered the righteous to leave at once. Judgment had been pronounced, to flee from the unrighteous forthwith…or suffer their fate.

Scripture could not be clearer. We men/women …have no excuse. Everybody knows the crimes against mankind that the Sodomites practiced, and God’s judgment for such crimes.

You are now insinuating that a footnote dogmatically explicates and/or points to a singular correct scriptural interpretation simply because the footnote is there.

Okay. We can play that game, Coptic. If a footnote is narrowly dogmatically definitive, how much more the text of the catechism itself? Let’s apply such a narrow and dogmatic framework to the passage you quoted from the catechism.

We see a few things from the bit of the catechism you posted:

1–Homosexuality refers to relations (presumably sexual) between people who are sexually attracted to other people of the same sex. I.e., homosexuality is homosexual sex between homosexual people.
2–Homosexual acts are acts of grave depravity. We are given to understand that homosexuality as defined in point 1 is gravely depraved: sexual relations between people who are sexually attracted to other people of the same sex are acts of grave depravity.
3–We must conclude from the definition and context given that for a homosexual act to be a homosexual act of grave depravity, it must be committed by two homosexual people who, by the definition given, at least have the capacity to find each other sexually attractive even if they may not (in specific instances and for whatever reason) be attracted to each other.
3a–It is impossible, therefore, for a heterosexual person to commit homosexual acts. While some heterosexuals do engage or have engaged in same-sex sexual activity (on account of prostitution, porn work, “experimentation,” perpetrating or falling victim to sexual violence such as hazing, etc.), that activity, by definition, cannot be considered a homosexual act if it is engaged in by one or more heterosexuals. I.e., it is impossible for a homosexual man and a heterosexual man to engage in a homosexual act together.

A–We must assume, then, that the men of Sodom (young and old) found the strangers/angels in their midst sexually attractive (or were capable of finding them so) and were thus homosexual since we have assumed, a priori and on the basis of a footnote , that the story is about homosexual acts committed by homosexual persons. While there is no evidence for this assumption (the Genesis text would indicate that some violent sexual act was being committed, and we know that attraction need not be involved when one person rapes or sexually abuses or humiliates another person regardless of the sex of the victim and the sex of the perpetrator), if this assumption is not made, then we are* not* talking about homosexuality according to our strict reading of the catechism’s definition of what homosexuality is.
B–We must also assume that the strangers in Sodom found all the men of Sodom (young and old) sexually attractive (or were capable of finding them so) and were also homosexual. There is no evidence for this assumption. But it must be made in order to satisfy the catechism’s criteria of what constitutes homosexuality and thus what constitutes a homosexual act (see 1, 2 and 3 above).

Now, Coptic, this exegesis of the catechism and its relation to Genesis 19 is absurd. But it certainly doesn’t go against the *letter of the catechism when it comes to it’s definition of homosexuality and homosexual acts. Likewise, interpreting the mere presence of a footnote to be indicative of a dogmatic definition of a single “correct” interpretation of a passage of scripture is absurd, even if it agrees with the letter *of the catechism, though not with reason.

You damage the credibility of the catechism, the credibility of scripture and the credibility of the faith when you insist on reading dogmatic definitions into things where such definitions are lacking or even inappropriate and which may prove a skandalon to other believers, those weak in faith, or those curious about the faith. Similarly, you do no one a favor when you insist on the singular orthodoxy of a narrowly constructed reading when it is clear that other readings (such as that of Ezekiel mentioned earlier in this thread) are at least as authoritative and traditional as those you wish to promote.

The issue here is not which interpretation of scripture is a priori and dogmatically “right” or “wrong” on the basis of a footnote–the issue is: how do we interpret the scripture in a way that authentically takes into consideration and is faithful to: the intentions of scripture; the guidance of tradition; the needs of our community in our time (i.e. we must ask not only what is scripture saying, but to whom–you wouldn’t tell a starving person that “man shall not live by bread alone” and then send him on his way); and the objectively definitive revelation of God in Jesus Christ.

Having addressed these issues, the next important question we should then ask is *not *whether the interpretation is right or wrong, but: “How does it impinge upon my prayer, which is or ought to be my life?” If the interpretation leads to the spread of the Gospel, the building up of the Church of Christ and the equipping of the saints for ministry, then great! We’re on the right track! If not…then we need to try again.

This won’t do. Certainly homosexual acts are grave sins, but indulging homosexual thoughts would be a venial sin. It is not as if only the unchaste thoughts of heterosexual persons were confessional matter!

Further—and this is more important now than in previous times—the public advocacy for acceptance of heterosexual acts as “good” or “morally neutral” is wrong, just as publicly advocating for abortion is wrong even if one does not obtain an abortion oneself. (This error is not restricted to homosexual persons; indeed, more heterosexual persons advocate for same-sex marriage than homosexual persons do. Some may not know any better, in which case they are in serious error but have diminished culpability.)

Sorry, but indulging /fixation/fantasizing of such thoughts…either by straight or gay are mortal…and need confession.

Whether they are mortal or venial is for a confessor to discern. The point was that homosexual thoughts can be sinful; it is not just the act that is sinful (-though the act is a grave sin indeed.)

I’ve heard this many times and see an obvious problem: literature provides us with volumes of testimony from adult heterosexuals who felt “different” at an early age. One might say it is normal for children to feel “different”!

Further, children feel “different” for many reasons: some are shy, some are sickly, some are aggressive, some are tall, or short, or fat, or have rashes, blemishes, a speech impediment, famous parents, infamous parents, and so on.

But backing up: if a child of five or so feels “different,” how likely is it that he senses that his sexual orientation is not the most common one among his playmates? In order to feel “different” in the right sense (-for this scenario to seem tenable) it is not enough to know years before puberty one’s sexual orientation (-which is puzzling enough to me) but to sense that of OTHER PEOPLE TOO and thus realize that most of them are not gay, thus making you different. This is scarcely credible.
I totally agree with what you are saying here.

You make some good points and mostly I agree but I don’t know where you determined that thoughts are only venial. They could be mortal depending on if all three conditions for a mortal sin is met.

I believe the one that it is serious matter is met. Jesus said
Matthew 5:27-28
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[a] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
I do not know why this wouldn’t also apply to homosexual thoughts as well.

It does apply …and because the King of Heaven & Chief Priest on Earth said so …

we can absolutely know our thoughts,( if deviant, disordered & fixated upon to take pleasure) …are mortal sins that must be confessed.

I agree with you here. My point was to counter the claim that ONLY homosexual acts are sinful by pointing out unchaste thoughts can be sinful but I should have been clearer that unchaste thoughts can be mortal sins. (I think they may also be venial, especially where the young / immature are involved but this is all confessional matter and a priest is best placed to discern in particular cases;)

Hey adrift, sorry that I misunderstood your posts. :o

Dear adrift,

Cordial greetings and a very good day. Hope all is well. Perhaps I can be of some help.

In the Epistle of Jude we read: “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (v. 7, emphasis mine, “acted immorally and indulged in unnatural lust” (RSV CE). Here the nefarious and unnatural conduct of the notorious Sodomite sinners is unmistakeably stressed, dear friend. Incontrovertably, this passage states that the men of Sodom and Gomorrah engaged in deviant homosexual vice and the rare compound ekporneuein, ‘fornication’, may suggest by ek ‘against the course of nature’. Be that as it may, there is no mistaking that for St. Jude the men of Sodom and Gomorrah (and the cities round them, Admah and Zeboim, Deut. 29: 23), paid the penalty in “eternal fire”, as an example for all to see. Normally in Sacred Scripture, eternal fire means Hell fire and thus the meaning is probably that the firery destruction was an anticipation of that eternal fire which awaits the Devil and his wicked accomplices (see Rev. 19: 20, 20: 10, 21: 8). It represented a lasting and fearful warning to posterity and served as a standing reminder that the triumph of evil is not final; the judgment of God, though it delay, will at length surely come.

Homosexual acts of depravity witness to the deep degradation into which man has fallen by his vices - vices against which Nature herself protests and which should not be spoken of without blush and shame. Since this destestable vice was decriminalized in both America and the UK, it has come to be increasingly regarded by the avant garde as an acceptable ‘alternative lifestyle’. However, dear friend, such an aberrant vice should not be named or thought of but with the utmost abhorence and destestation. What is so very distrurbing today is how these wicked acts are spoken of quite casually and even refered to as ‘gay’, when the homosexual lifestyle is anything but gay. How men need to be reminded afresh that the obliteration of Sodom and Gomorrah is a particular warning to all people to take heed of and steer well clear of all homosexual deviant acts, which evoke the wrath of God. This unnatural vice consumed the Sodomites with fire from Heaven, therefore ought men to tremble and not imitate their vile sins, lest the same fate should befall them as it did the men of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Men should not delude themselves, God is the same holy and just God now as He was then and is “of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity” (Hab. 1: 13). Can the vile and unnatural vice indulged in for momentary pleasure in this mortal life make amends for “suffering the vengeance of eternal fire”? “Stand in awe, (therefore) and sin not” (Psalm 4: 4).

God bless.

Warmest good wishes,
