Have not been home during the day for a very long time.

The soft porn on daytime soaps is troubling…how to wage a campaign on this?

Please do not suggest no TV - not an option.

For waging a campaign against this, I suggest joining PTC, the Parents Television Council. They have campaigns against sponsors of unacceptable shows, with considerable success.

As far as watching it, I gave up cable TV and only use Netflix and movies from the library. I couldn’t believe what was showing up on cable. We also have an antenna, so my husband gets Univision and PBS and an old movie channel.

Softcore porn?
Are you sure about this?

Softcore porn is nudity and/or sexual activity, without clearly showing genitalia specifics or “penetration”.

You saw this on a soap opera?

.
Do you ever watch soap operas  I recall this stuff from middle school as my first exposure to immoral imagery. It has only gotten worse.

What do you mean by “soft porn”? I’ve never seen soft porn in a soap opera. At least not in a soap opera on one of the major stations.

Me, either. I have seen some sexual situations and a lot of suggestiveness, but never anything close to “soft core porn”.

For it to be “soft core porn” there would have to be nudity. Literally. Breasts totally uncovered. Actors only wearing a pair of underwear or nothing at all. Naked people simulating sex without showing penile penetration. I haven’t seen anything even approaching that on network TV here in the US.

As far as disapproving of what is shown on TV, I can somewhat relate. A lot of the educational TV I used to enjoy has been dumbed down and is just terrible. I can’t abide “reality TV”, either. To avoid those shows and other shows that are simply ridiculous I change the channel or use the internet. 🤷

With modern technology there are about 300+ channels available to most people and then there is the internet, which is full of more intellectually stimulating and wholesome streaming video. Not to mention there is always the option of DVD’s and services like Netflix. Plus, most cable and satellite providers include DVR’s with their services so that you can scroll through every channel you have and select shows you enjoy to record when you are unable to watch them live.

It’s easy as pie to avoid the kind of programming you do not like and have many hours a day of programming that you do like.

Don’t watch them. That’s the best way to “fight” soaps. Companies sponsor soaps because of the audience, and when there is no audience, sponsors walk away, and with no sponsors, there is no soap. That’s the way television works.

Several long-time soaps have gone off the air in recent years, and more will follow. They’re all doomed due to low ratings. Soap operas are suffering the same fate as figure skating broadcasts–women aren’t watching anymore because they have so many options on cable TV, TiVo, netflix, youtube, etc. Most women would rather watch the Food Network or HGTV or movies rather than a soap.

Soaps have always pushed the envelope when it comes to “sex scenes.” Back in my mother’s day when soaps were on the radio, it was “racy plots”; e.g., two unmarried people having an…gasp!..affair! Back in MY day, it was two unmarried people living together, or rape (Luke and Laura started out as a rape), or abortion. Back in my daughters’ days, it was gay couples.

And there have always been “racy” bedroom scenes. Many women would call soap scenes “romantic.” I would. Keep in mind that one of the target audiences for soaps is still women who are at home, often with babies and young children who are taking their naps during the soap. Another audience for soaps is elderly women who are at home. There is nothing sinful about a little romantic fantasy, especially if it leads the woman to seek a real-life romantic encounter with her delighted husband. My problem with the romantic fantasy is that on soaps, it is usually between a man and a woman who are not married… but not always. Soaps still show married couples enjoying a bedroom fantasy! Women need romance, and soaps often encourage them to try to revive the romance with their husbands.

Now don’t misinterpret me–there are definite problems with soaps and there always have been problems with soaps. I realize that another target audience for soaps is teenagers who are at home, which is the majority of young teens under 16 (too young to drive or work). My personal feeling is that if mom or dad watches the soap with the teen, it can be a great bonding experience, and mom or dad can use the soap to discuss real-life romantic scenaria with their teen. MY mother did this–she was a major All My Children fan for decades, and we talked about the soap all the time. (I didn’t watch it, but it’s easy enough to keep up with a soap’s characters by reading the newspaper summaries.)

I guess I just don’t think that soap operas are that serious a problem in the U.S. There are much worse media culprits that we need to pay more attention to.

There’s a big leap between “don’t watch TV” and “don’t watch soap operas”. If you don’t like a particular show, don’t watch it. Simple as that.

Just don’t watch them. It’s very easy to just change the channel and watch something else. 🤷

Find some clean shows that are also funny, cute, thought-provoking, exciting- whatever it is you’re looking for. Then watch those instead. 🤷

I agree that I’ve never seen any “soft core porn” in a soap opera… But then, I don’t watch soap operas. I can’t imagine sexual nudity airing in the daytime, but maybe we’ve gone that far? I doubt it, but I suppose it’s possible.

Either way, the best solution is not to watch shows you don’t approve of.

I agree with the OP. Daytime shows are getting bad now. Kids are home after school and now for the summer. It’s not only soaps. The Doctors had a show on the subject of “how to satisfy a woman in bed”. They went into the whole subject of sex, etc. If parents don’t know what their kids are watching then they would be shocked.

I know some parents only buy tapes of shows they know are G rated and the kids watch those, no TV allowed. They have some good G rated tapes like Veggie Tales and many good moral shows. Even Sesame Street now is trying to tell the kids about gays and transgendered subjects. I certainly would get the parental turn off switch for TV and also the Internet. The Internet can be a lot worse. Parents need to know.

As for watching them yourself you need to make that call. I stopped watching “Friends” when it seemed all the characters were determined to sleep with all of New York City. The last show I watched was when Pheoby worried why her date hadn’t taken her to bed yet, after it was their third date.

I donot watch any of the daytime soaps. I happened to be home and was trying to get to my shows of choice cooking channel and HGTV.

My OP was not about disputing the definition - it was about the impact that these daily shows have on adolescents that may beat home alone.

I would simply encourage no TV for kids without parents OK-ing the show. It is much easier to get rid of TV altogether. I wouldn’t suggest getting rid of all shows, but simply having something like Netflix or Hulu Plus gives much more choice and control. That means kids won’t be left watching inappropriate stuff just because “nothing else is on”. Personally, I only watch stuff on hulu these days.

I would definitely reccomend supervising small children and limiting their internet access. Teens I think should be given much more leeway, especially if they have not abused the privilege. Besides, stopping teenagers from accessing the internet is almost impossible anyway, unless you keep them house-bound and without a computer or phone.

If you want to stop the shows from airing, the same course of action can be followed. Don’t watch. If nobody watches, the show will stop airing due to low ratings. 🤷

Thank you for some of the posts that are filled with wisdom and concrete suggestions.

My question is not about the definition of a term I used in my OP - it is about the impact these day time story lines have on the audience it attracts. It may not be “soft porn” in a definition - it is still spirirually harmful.

Are those on this thread in agreement? If not please explain.

Who cares? You live your own life and let others live their own life.

I re-read the OP and realized that you said not to suggest doing away with TV entirely. Sorry about that. (Although I am curious about why it’s “not an option”.)

I’m not really sure what we’re supposed to be discussing. The OP is very vague on what this “soft porn” is, as well as what your goal is. Get it off TV? Not be harmed by it? Not have it shown to kids?

I don’t think we can say too much more unless we have a bit more backround or explanation of the topic.

Yes, people have sex on certain TV shows (though I wouldn’t call it porn). But not all. If it’s a problem for you, just avoid those that do. 🤷

Who cares? I do. I am my “brothers/sisters” keeper.
I understand your concern, and trust me I too am bothered by the way sexuality is portrayed on TV these days. But in this case I do agree with the poster you are responding to above: live and let live. Unfortunately not everyone is going to think premarital sex and casual sex are wrong, and trying to take that completely out of television is forcing it quite a bit I think… 🤷

Thank you for your post. The Catholic Church has stood against larger and more well known issues than my concern…however many of them continue to be harmful to the spiritual life of many Catholics. How do Catholics stand up to this trend?

Live and let live? I hope there is another way to address this topic.
