Where is sola scriptura in the bible???
When Jesus confronted Satan in the wilderness, did He say “it is written…” or “the Catholic church declares…”?Where is sola scriptura in the bible???
What is sola scriptura?Where is sola scriptura in the bible???
Sola scriptura is the doctrine that says that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, and is the authority by which tradition, revelation, doctrine and practice must be judged. What is sola scriptura?
And that reasoning answers the many and varied interpretations of “doctrine and practice” how ???Sola scriptura is the doctrine that says that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, and is the authority by which tradition, revelation, doctrine and practice must be judged.
The Catholics will tell you that we believe it means that the Bible is the only source of authority, but this is not true.
We also accept the authority of the church (just not their particular branch of the church), the creeds and confessions of Christianity, and tradition, among other things.
We believe that each of these is a valid source of doctrine and pratice. We just believe that they are to defer to the authority of God’s word and are valid only inasmuch as they are in agreement with God’s word.
I’m just answering his question about what sola scriptura is. If you want to raise the typical Catholic lie of “30,000 denominations”, I’m afraid you’re going to have to play by yourself. And that reasoning answers the many and varied interpretations of “doctrine and practice” how ???

You raised it… you play with it. The bottom line, though, is that there are a whole lot more than one, one hundred, or one thousand.I’m just answering his question about what sola scriptura is. That sounds reasonable. What could be wrong with that?Sola scriptura is the doctrine that says that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, and is the authority by which tradition, revelation, doctrine and practice must be judged.
Actually, I didn’t raise it. He asked what sola scriptura is and I told him.You raised it… you play with it.
His exact words were: “What is sola scriptura?”The questions asks if Sola Scriptura is biblical, not what it is.
I agree. There is one church. It’s just not the exclusivity of the Catholic church. And of course it is not Biblical, and neither is the concept of more than one Church. “… I will build My Church…” is singular.
He indeed appealed to the authority of the scriptures. But where does that imply sola scriptura? Jesus is speaking here as an Old Testament man. There was no church in the Old Testament. But there is a church in the New Testament and that is what has been given the authority (1 Tim 3:15).When Jesus confronted Satan in the wilderness, did He say “it is written…” or “the Catholic church declares…”?
Which authority did He appeal to?
Where does the Bible say that? I don’t find that doctrine in the Bible! It’s a man made doctrine.Sola scriptura is the doctrine that says that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, and is the authority by which tradition, revelation, doctrine and practice must be judged.
It doesn’t. I’m describing what sola scriptura is, not showing where in scripture sola scriptura is taught.Where does the Bible say that?
That’s exactly what sola scriptura is: an appeal to the authority of scripture. He indeed appealed to the authority of the scriptures. But where does that imply sola scriptura?
The Old Testament was complete with the Old Law. Is scripture complete with the new Law? Or are traditions also involved? That’s exactly what sola scriptura is: an appeal to the authority of scripture.
Most Catholic doctrine may not be found word for word in the scriptures, but the church appeals to the scriptures for its doctrine. You say that scriptures do not use the words “scripture alone” in the bible, so reason says that you can not believe in scripture alone, because the bible does not use the words scripture alone. It doesn’t. I’m describing what sola scriptura is, not showing where in scripture sola scriptura is taught.

Then, by your convoluted logic, I shouldn’t believe in the Trinity and you shouldn’t believe in Purgatory. Most Catholic doctrine may not be found word for word in the scriptures, but the church appeals to the scriptures for its doctrine. Convoluted? I think not sir…the fact is that Christianity has always believed in implied doctrines. In fact, a great many of the messianic prophesies that Our Lord fulfilled are implied in the Old Testament and that is one thing that has caused the Jews to stumble over Him to this day. Then, by your convoluted logic, I shouldn’t believe in the Trinity and you shouldn’t believe in Purgatory.
