Laudater Jesus Christus!

Peace to all who read this thread.

Can we base our beliefs (faith) and practice solely/only in the Holy Scripture?

:hmmm:

I voted no - the scriptures themselves may be an authority, but they can’t be final…just look what happens when you don’t have a valid authority to tell us how to interpret the essentials in scripture.

But maybe I’m reading the question the wrong way!

I voted Yes AND No – since that was permitted. In and of itself, Sacred Scripture is a final authority because it’s the Word of God, so there’s no appeal beyond it. Nevertheless, it’s not final in the sense that it doesn’t stand alone from the standpoint of interpretation.

And of courrse, it’s not the ONLY authority.

I think that this poll is problematic because you really have to define what you mean by “final”.

I voted no because I believe we, as sinners, do not have the means to interpret the Scriptures without guidance from Holy Mother Church.

Nope, scripture is not the final authority. The magisterium is.

This is a Catholic website, and the Catholic Church (correctly) teaches that Sola Scriptura is incorrect. It is obvious that all Catholics will vote “No” in this poll.

What if we rephrase the question, how would you guys answer this:
“Is Scripture, properly interpreted, the final authority in faith and life?”

Fr corapi says 3 things are what makes up the final word…Scipture…the magesterium to interpret it…and tradition…you need all 3 for it to be valid

I voted no

Can’t answer, because you do not indicate who is deemed of authority to make such interpretation.

Rephrase it "“Is Scripture, properly interpreted by those, who in the fulfilment of Christs’s Will of preaching the Good News by authority of Apostolic Succession, and who retain full communion with the Church Christ willed, the final authority in faith and life?”

Then, my answer may be yes, but only after asking a Holy Priest for guidence.

And the thing I really don’t unsderstand about those who embrace Sola Scriptura, is the dismissal of two of the things Christ said that need no interpretation, due to their simple and direct message.

Do this in memory of me

** And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against* it. ***

He did not say “churches”, and it can’t be argued he meant otherwise, or he would have said “them” instead of “it”.

What IF Tradition [with a capital T], conflicts with the clear teachings in Scripture? What will prevail, Tradition or Scripture?

Why should it?. Oral tradition was what Christ taught and passed down before there was a bible!

I think you are grapsing at straws!

I was like most people and voted NO because the Church is the final authority because it is the Church that must interpret the Scriptures.

Tradition does not and would not contradict Scripture. Scripture is a product of Tradition and complements it perfectly, otherwise it would not be sacred. and the Holy Spirit would be wrong.

The only thing Tradition would conflict with is a MISinterpretation of what Scripture says. Scripture came out of the Tradition of the Church. The only conflicts are when people take a verse from here and a verse from there out of context and try to make up their own doctrines. Scripture, read in light of the Traditions of the Church and under the guidance of the Magisterium, can never conflict with Tradition.

How do we know that Holy Mother Church is Infallible; is this not from interpreting the Scriptures?

Thanks for pointing this out - the question is like asking, “what if the sculptor contradicts his sculpture?” Obviously analogies are limited, but the question really doesn’t make sense.

I have no disagreement with you on this at all. There is only one Church that Jesus established, not many.
