So, I think a big part of the disappointing sales is not a reaction against Solo, but a reaction against the Last Jedi, which many saw as terrible, including me.
That’s a good point. Plus I don’t think it helped coming only 5 months after Last Jedi, plus coming on the heels of Infinity War and Deadpool 2. It may have fared better if it were released in December.

It’s all about the money. An article in Variety pointed out that Disney is flush with cash and it was likely that a newer Star Wars movie would sputter - eventually. Just another info fragment.

Now that I’ve seen it, I thought it was very good. No spoilers )

I re-watched Rogue One today for the first time since it was in theaters. That movie is just amazing. I was the biggest cynic of the new Star Wars movies going in (and I mostly hated Episode 7), but Rogue One really knocked it out of the park on every count for me. It’s the only one of the four new ones that feels like the originals for me.

Same. Rogue One was good. The New Trilogy Movies…not so much.

After Force Awakens it was game over for me. We got a taste of the radical feminism in that one, and from what I’ve heard, it’s even worse in The Last Jedi. Forced politics ruins movies. And I didn’t want to see the degradation of Luke.
Disney used to make wonderful feminine movies, but now they are trending feminist.

Disney is pushing for a Lord of the Flies world run by children, but it’s like they’ve never read the book.

I saw it last weekend and I was very pleased. I’m a pretty big Star Wars fan and I enjoyed it immensely. I felt like Alden did a fine job and the story, while not terribly creative, was good and kept me on the edge of my seat.
I found out that Lando was supposed to be pansexual after I saw the film. There is a certain character who’s extremely feminist and happens to be his “love” but it’s a female programmed droid and I honestly thought it was just Lando being smooth until I heard a few of what I think was supposed to be jokes.

My guess is that critics are trying to make up for their highly inaccurate reviews of the Last Jedi. I don’t really know of any Star Wars fan that liked the Last Jedi, and it wasn’t even good cinematically except for the last 10-15 minutes (which is actually done better than Empire Strikes Back). Though one friend said if you don’t have expectations, then you can enjoy it, which I agree since the whole movie was a troll on the fans, but the cinematic flaws were so glaring.

From what I’ve heard, Solo is decent as a movie and has some good scenes, but a hard sell coming of the disappointment from the Last Jedi

I think that’s pretty spot on.

You’re limited in how much you can do when shooting a prequel of sorts. It’s hard to take any danger Han, Chewie or Lando get into as legitimate when you know their characters are alive and well in the originals.

My disappointment with The Last Jedi turned me off of Solo, which would have been opening weekend material for me even though I never asked for it. I’ll probably see it eventually.

My disappointment with TLJ is just how flimsy and poorly written the story is. It has the “right” story beats, it has themes, but the actual plotting is just terrible from a writing perspective. It’s a first draft effort and it shows. I also don’t mind the idea of giving directors a lot of creative freedom, but it’s apparent that there was no overarching vision or plan for this trilogy (the directors have openly admitted as much), which is just insulting and abominable.

I don’t think Lucas had a hard outline, but he clearly wanted to tell a Hero’s Journey arc for Luke and follow typical fantasy tropes. Farmboy realizes he’s part of a much bigger destiny and goes out into the world. It just so happens that he’s following in the footsteps of his father who he’s learning new things about (not even commenting on the big twist in Empire, which was planned). This basic character arc for Luke did set up what generally needed to happen, a “belly of the whale” moment in the middle, the losses and confrontations, etc… But yeah, Lucas obviously winged some things or changed some stuff later.

However, I feel the ST lacks even that as a basic vision. Rey’s already come away the better against Kylo twice. Finn has already come away victorious against Phasma twice. Where’s the suspense or growth in that? Character flaws are missing for Rey (seeing the good in people or wanting to see her parents/family is as much of a flaw as telling a possible employer your flaw is that you work too hard sometimes). And if we breakdown TLJ in detail, the Casino/codebreaker arc is just silly, the tracking and fuel plot are pretty bad, the best moments were Luke/Rey/Kylo but really Rey was there only about a couple (literally) days if you look at the timeline. Maz’ appearance was absurd, and like much of the plot, badly contrived such that it feels like it’s happening because the writers are forcing it to happen between plot point A and plot point B, not because it feels like a natural sequence of events. Luke going bitter and into exile was fine but his confrontation at the end was more interested in making him look like a bad*** at the cost of characterization and completing his arc one way or another.

I agree. I think the cinematic effects and angles were good but the story was pretty bad.
If only Disney would make Lucasfilm be like Marvel and plan everything out. Now, it’s just directors doing their own things and getting confusing and weak stories as a result.

SPOILER ALERT!!!

My big concern was that the new guy wouldn’t play Han convincingly. He actually did a very good job. I bought it. I really enjoyed it. Was hoping for a sequel to explain Darth Maul and his role in the whole thing.
I didn’t like the idea that he survived and featured in the Clone Wars series. I just didn’t accept that he could survive being cut in half and falling down a deep chasm.

That’s the power of the dark side for ya…
Strong in the Force is he.
