Somalia Town Threatens to Behead People Who Don’t Pray 5 Times Daily

Wednesday, December 06, 2006

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Residents of a southern Somalia town who do not pray five times a day will be beheaded, an official said Wednesday, adding the edict will be implemented in three days.

Shops, tea houses and other public places in Bulo Burto, about 124 miles northeast of the capital, Mogadishu, should be closed during prayer time and no one should be on the streets, said Sheik Hussein Barre Rage, the chairman of the town’s Islamic court. His court is part of a network backed by armed militiamen that has taken control of much of southern Somalia in recent months, bringing a strict interpretation of Islam that is alien to many Somalis.

Those who do not follow the prayer edict after three days have elapsed, “will definitely be beheaded according to Islamic law,” Rage told The Associated Press by phone. “As Muslims we should practice Islam fully, not in part, and that is what our religion enjoins us to do.”

He said the edict, which covered only Bulo Burto, was being announced over loudspeakers throughout the town.

Somalia’s Islamic courts have made varying interpretations of Koranic law, some applying a more strict and radical version of Islam than others. Some of the courts have introduced public executions, floggings of convicts, bans on women swimming in Mogadishu’s public beaches and on the sale and chewing of khat, a leafy stimulant consumed across the Horn of Africa and in the Middle East.

After complaints about the lack of consistency from residents in the capital, Mogadishu, the umbrella Council of Islamic Courts set up an appeals court with better educated judges in October.

The chewing of Khat?

Khats, dogs and pigs. What is an animal lover to do?

I agree no one should chew a poor Khat. Thats just plain mean spirited.

Whatever happened to “no compulsion of religion” and “free will”?

The whole thing is disgusting!

another reason those of us who live where there is freedom of religion should be grateful.

Hmm, well any Catholics living there could pray the rosary 5 times a day…but do they mean they must pray Islamic prayers?

I guess that’s why Somalia will never be a big tourist attraction.

Beheading insurance is hard to obtain.

I don’t suppose we would be allowed to apply these laws to parents who fail to show up for sacramental parent meetings, or keep their kids ot of CCD for football tournaments, mariachi, dance class, karate or other reasons.

“Anyone missing 3 PSR classes will be beheaded.” Now that’s taking a hard line.

Tell me again why people like Sharia law?

Because they “like” it compared to being executed. 😦

That’s so sad… what happened to free choice? God doesn’t say how many times a day we have to pray.

My prayers are w/these people.

You are taking free will for granted like it is a human right…maybe in this country it is, but not everywhere. If someone told me I would have to pray 5 times a day or be beheaded, I would but it would become a habit, not something I wanted to do. God wants us to choose him…not be coerced into worshipping him. How great to be able to pray 5 times a day and have the support of government, but to be required? Nope, doesn’t fit God’s plan…

No matter what awful things one expects from Islam, it never fails to live up to expectations.

I don’t post on this forum anymore because I’ve met some of the worst human beings while I was here and I don’t ever want to expose myself to that kind of petty meanness but I saw this and just had to respond. What is wrong with you people? Did you’re parents teach you as children to be blind followers and never question what you’re told? Not to be rude in anyway but the absurdity of this article is only trumped by the absurd comments made here. Does anybody here know any Somalis at all? If you did you would know as a people we respect our religious leaders and even at times we may listen to them when they tell us things but there is a line that has been drawn in the sand, they know this, we know this and if they {the religious leaders} value their heads, they don’t cross it, ever. We, as Somalis, don’t listen to anybody, we don’t like authority, its why our country is in the shape it is in now; we do what we want to do, when we want to do it and how we want to do it. Either every man, woman and child in that village is 110% behind this new rule or it’s a lie, they’re no two ways about it. Ask a Somali.

and fyi Somali has a 100% Muslim population. We’ll do everything in our power to stop someone from converting to Christianity or anything else but at the end of day if that person chooses to convert we don’t persecute them in any shape or form. They’ll become a freak show, people will come from all over the land just to catch a glimpse of them, and we’ll point and stare and make lots and lots of comments; we’ll make it into a spectator sport. Anybody who says either ways is flat out lying and trying to push their own agenda. The only things you could convert to where we may come at you with pitch forks are atheism, communism and/or Marxism. These we hate with a passion, Christians aren’t even a blimp on our radar and when you are you’re there for general amusement; I know its mean but you guys make us laugh.

Kinda sounds like persecution to me, Gus.

Fatuma,
I have met some Somali’s. I I didn’t realize that your attitude is common among them. Maybe we should revise our immigration laws accordingly. But you are right, your attitude and beliefs are why your country is a hellhole. You must be so proud. I notice you personally prefer to live in a non-muslim country rather then your own. Maybe you should go back home, eh?

But let me get this straight. We are rude for objecting to the murder of people who miss a prayer? You don’t find murder a bit rude? Which is more rude?

I invite you to consider joining us laughable Christians. We won’t kill you for forgetting a prayer.
