The Church does indeed believe in Satan.

Catechism of the Catholic Church said:
391 Behind the disobedient choice of our first parents lurks a seductive voice, opposed to God, which makes them fall into death out of envy. Scripture and the Church’s Tradition see in this being a fallen angel, called “Satan” or the “devil”.The Church teaches that Satan was at first a good angel, made by God: “The devil and the other demons were indeed created naturally good by God, but they became evil by their own doing.”

Catechism of the Catholic Church said:
2864 In the last petition, “but deliver us from evil,” Christians pray to God with the Church to show forth the victory, already won by Christ, over the “ruler of this world,” Satan, the angel personally opposed to God and to his plan of salvation.

Catechism of the Catholic Church said:
2851 In this petition, evil is not an abstraction, but refers to a person, Satan, the Evil One, the angel who opposes God. The devil (dia-bolos) is the one who “throws himself across” God’s plan and his work of salvation accomplished in Christ.

As you can see, the Catholic Church clearly teaches that Satan is a fallen angel. Satan is real and really does exist as a fallen angel.

Even look at the St. Michael the Archangel prayer. In it, it says that Satan roams throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Emphasis in bold mine.

Anyway, it does not surprise me that some bishops and priests don’t believe in the devil. It is unfortunate that they don’t believe in this clearly orthodox doctrine of the Church. But then again, not all the bishops and priests in the Church are orthodox either.

Can someone help me, I couldn’t find the interview of Fr. Amorth on H2O? thanks. Is there any other link that I can go to?

Well, now that’s interesting. While the link I provided does go to H2O News, I could no longer find the video, even when doing a search for “Exorcist.”

It was there yesterday ---- honest!

I believe you. Sometimes the strangest things happens when we speak of the devil…I’ll try some other sites…I’m not sure if there is an official site of the AIE or the International Assocation of Egsorcists. Fr. Amorth was the President once
Sorry it is the International Association of Exorcists:blush:

Vern, I am likewise confused by this statement:

I think you lost me there. What does “and if he is” mean?
I have a brother. He is President of the United States.
One of those statements is true.

Clearly, the Church expresses belief in the reality of Satan as an existent, intelligent, powerful and self-aware being. So does St. Augustine of Hippo. Your position, however, has become increasingly indecipherable throughout this post. Humor me, and tell me straight out whether you believe that Satan, as an actual being, exists or whether you believe him to be a literary devise - scapegoat - for evil. This question does not suppose that Satan is God’s evil twin brother, or that he is the author of evil in any sense. Is Satan real or not?

I understand the dualism anxoity, but what about the book of Job that is all about Satan’s temptations, I do not see how Satan would even come close to nearing God, I think dualism is out of the question, at least for me:confused:

I hope that this article dealing with exorcisms and wether bishops, priests believe in Satan will contribute to this thread…it is on www.speroforum.com; titile of the article is: Vatican exorcist Amorth speaks on Satan’ smoke. ( Spero News)
IMO the question of this thread is closely related to the ministry of exorcism; there are bishops and priests and lay people that don’t believe in Satan. I pray for the priests and lay persons involved in this ministry within the Catholic Church because their efforts are usually not recognized or appreciated. Sometimes when you speak with your fellow catholics about Satan, you can be labelled as being involved in magic or as freaky fanatic etc.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church “Scripture and Tradition” speak of a fallen angel, called Satan or the Devil. “The Church teaches that Satan wa at first a good angel, made by God.”(391) And the Catechism goes on to say much more to this effect.
The tradition of the Church for example is obvious, for example, in the rite of exorcism, a rite provided by the liturgical books of the Church. Who does is this rite meant to exorcise except demons?
Those Catholics who deny there is a satan are putting themselves in the ranks of dissenters, who are discussed often on various threads in Catholic Answers. If we begin accepting the things they say, we personally will have great problems. I don’t like to speak of bishops in this context, but perhaps some few have gone too far in this particular matter, since belief in satan in ingrained in Scripture, tradition and found in the Church’s own Catechism.

:hypno: :hypno: :hypno: (reading this thread)

Yep, read Fr. Amorth’s book… the worse thing the Church needs now is new age thinking … I would think that Priests (of all people) would be able to confirm the existence of satan…don’t they hear confessions? Opps, or are those the Priests that don’t offer confession times and say general confession is just alright by me

Satan is no counterpart to God as he is a created being like other angels and mankind.

To deny satan’s existence is a folly indeed and is manifested in the ways of the world for all to see.

Any exorcist will tell you he is very very real
