Hi all! Since Christmas is quickly approaching, a few issues have flared up in my family and I am in need of a bit of advice…

Some of you might know from my past posts that there are “problems” (to say the least) on my dad’s side of the family, specifically with my nana and his one sister. My nana is 88 years old and although she lives alone, her daughters (my aunts, obviously) are constantly in her life…and not always for the better; they are so nasty to her, are demanding of her time and money, and scream at her for little things. It’s horrendous. I just want to crawl in a hole and die when I witness it. One time, my aunt asked my nana to purchase a large package of bottled water for my cousin. Not only did my nana do that, but at 85 years old (at the time), she carried it all the way to the third floor of the dorm…by herself…without the help of my cousin!!!

You see, my father is, to put it plainly, the black sheep of the family. Although I have my disagreements with him, I love him dearly and after what he has pulled through in his life, he is my hero. His father, an alcoholic, left the family when my dad was seven, forcing my nana to go to work. At that young age, he raised, and I mean raised his two baby sisters all on his own. He cooked and cleaned the house, picked them up from school, and took care of their needs, all while my nana scrubbed toilets for 25 cents an hour.

When he was 18, he got his girlfriend pregnant, and wanted to do the honorable thing by marrying her. They did, but soon after, she cheated on him and wanted a divorce - he also discovered that while he was on the road working, she was physically abusive to my sister, as well. After the divorce, my daddy worked full time as a truck driver, while caring for my sister to the best of his abilities…completely alone. His mother changed the locks on him at the request of his sisters, and he ended up having to live in a rat and bug infested, condemned apartment with my sister. But he fought, even though he wanted to die…my dad, my hero, never gave up.

I felt the need to give some history before addressing this current problem. He has remained a good son to my nana throughout all of these trials. He calls her on the phone everyday, and is at her home in a heartbeat when she needs something fixed. Regardless of his faithfulness and love, she abuses him verbally. His youngest sister is and has always been very spoiled by my nana; she gives my cousins EVERYTHING they want, and favors them. Personally, I do not care if she does not give me anything. I just want to be loved…she is my only living grandparent.

So here we are, four days before Christmas. My dad does not want to go to my nana’s home for the Christmas Eve celebration to avoid conflict. However, today my nana specifically asked me if I would come. Even though she abuses me, I still love and respect her…her life was not peaches and cream either. But the dilemma is…do I disrespect my nana and not go solely to appease my dad? I am 100% on my father’s side, but…what if this is her last Christmas? Will it hurt my dad?

Finally, I am asking for prayers to heal this somewhat broken family. My cousins are not practicing Catholics, but my nana and aunts are, as are my parents and myself. Please pray that God helps us all through this pain - especially my father. He truly is a hero in every essence of the word. I do not think I would have the strength or will to do what he did - my sister lived a good life because of the sacrifices he made. So during this holiday season, please pray that he is able to overcome the wounds inflicted on him by his family. He suffers from severe depression, especially around Christmas time…all the old feelings re-surface.

God bless,

Christa

Oh and also, one of the things that bothers me the most lately is that when he is angry, he takes it out on me. I was just vacuuming, and he came in my room and started yelling at me because I was going to “wake” my mother who is sleeping in the living room - my mom does NOT care if I vacuum…she’d probably even be happy that I am getting some things done. It’s just because he has been drinking and is really out of it. Now, I still mean what I said…I love my father so, so much…but when he is like this…it is so hard for me to deal. I hate it when he takes his anger out on me. 😦

I’m praying for you this night…my late husband was like this. It’s difficult walking on eggshells all the time. Know that my prayers go before you.
Peace,
C

I am sad that you are going through this. Many members of your family are looking back on times when things were difficult, and if they let the Lord heal them of their past pain it would help a great deal. You have a loving concern for all of them and have to watch this unhappy circus of people causing each other pain.

Christa, (what a beautiful name), I promise to pray for you and that situation, and I also exhort you to say a prayer and make the effort to be aware that your Dad is most likely taking out his frustrations on you because you have a loving nature and would not talk back. I know it is hard, but the Lord and His Blessed Mother can help you to offer it up to Jesus, who was so misunderstood and tortured for all of us.

Hopefully, when your Dad is in a more pleasant mood you can share with him your hurt when he made such a fuss? He probably is not even aware of how he is hurting you.

May the Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother be with you, and comfort you in this most uncomfortable situation.

Peace and Prayers,

Dorothy

Christa, it seems to me that your grandmother is treating you very badly.

Whether or not there are differences between your father and her (and from your description, I think she’s being unreasonable, especially as he’s struggled to do the honourable thing throughout his life) she has absolutely no business abusing you.

If I were you, I’d not put myself through it. Love is a two-way street. If she is incapable of showing love to either you or your father, you really aren’t obligated to spend what should be a happy day with her.

You can’t make her love you, and you shouldn’t feel guilty for showing love to your father and being with him. You seem to be being emotionally blackmailed by your grandmother, perhaps even being used to try and hurt your father.

It’s time to say no, from what I can see.

Spend Christmas with your Dad. Love him and be at peace with him rather than being put down by your grandmother. I know you want her to love you, but you can’t make it happen. She needs to know you’re not going to be walked all over. Stay away and if she asks you why, you tell her that you’ve had enough of being abused by her. Perhaps if this does happen to be her last Christmas (and nobody can really tell when their days are going to be up, that’s God’s decision) and if this is the signal she needs then perhaps, if by staying away, she gets closer to understanding her wrongs, she might - when the time comes - go to meet her maker in a much better frame of mind.

Tell you Dad how much you love him, honour him and respect the sacrifices he made for you. Spend the time with him. It sounds to me like he needs it much more than she does.

You’re not going to like this but… I would mostly just do what he says. As long as it’s not illegal, immoral (or fattening :D). It’s your Dad, and someday, when he’s gone, you’ll be glad you honored your father and you’re keeping the commandment, which would be the priority. So, you’re still a minor - under 18? Have you thought about talking over a little more with your dad your wanting to see Grandma on Christmas Eve? Perhaps after he’s sober, and has just eaten his dinner ;). Maybe he will agree to let you go and bring her your present and visit for an hour or two. You’re a kind person to ask for prayers for your family. I’ll pray for you guys this Christmas. Merry Christmas!

I actually am not a minor…I am 20 years old. But of course, I still want to honor my father. Thank you for your response, I’m sure you are right on!

My goodness, I do not know what to say other than your post touched me very much. Thank you for your prayers and advice. 🙂

An “unhappy circus of people” is exactly what they are. You are right on with that statement. It is so sad to see the sibling rivalry (between my two aunts); I actually believe it one of the reasons why my own sister is so distant from me and nasty at times. She grew up seeing my aunts’ constant bickering, and I can only imagine how horrific that must have been for a small child to witness.

It is such an unhappy situation, but I will do my best to handle it…of course, not without a lot of prayer. Part of the problem is that I have been very physically sick for the past five months, and it just makes the whole thing worse. I try to offer it up to Our Lord and will continue to do so.

God bless and thank you again.

So your Nana is having a Christmas Eve celebration. Where will you/your parents/your Nana be on Christmas day? What is your dad going to be doing on Christmas Eve instead of going to the celebration?

My first thought would be to see if you could fit a visit in to Nana without neglecting your dad. He said that he wanted to avoid conflict - that doesn’t necessarily mean that he doesn’t want YOU to go. After all, he does dutifully continue to care for and maintain a relationship with his mother - so I imagine he would be ok with you doing that also. I’m not sure I would necessarily look at it as taking sides. You can support him in recognizing his own limits, AND visit with your Nana. If you are going to be spending Christmas day with your parents, and not your Nana, then I imagine they might not mind if you spend a couple of hours away on Christmas Eve. Can the time be coordinated in such a way that you can still spend quality time with your parents on Christmas Eve? Keep in mind, you don’t have to stay for the whole event.

If I were in your place, I would be inclined to talk to my dad about this (when he is approachable). I’d let him know that I would like to visit Grandma, but that if it will disrupt his plans, or make it hard for him to do that at the time of her celebration, that I would make a visit to her another time. See how he reacts, and if you think this is going to be too hard for him, then visit your Nana earlier in the day, or on Christmas night, or the next day.
