Some Cuckoo took a Kindle to Adoration

I have a Libre Pro, which I like, but there is just something about a read paper book that keeps me reading them.

I buy used books (and trade in my used books that I do not want to keep) and it just so happens we have a great used bookstore in Tucson, Bookmans.

The “text to speech” feature of eBook readers is frowned upon by publishing houses because it supposedly cuts into the profits from such things as “Books on CD” and “Books on Tape.” So don’t be surprised if such features are missing or deliberately broken/inaccurate because the maker has bowed to pressure.

A rosary is a blessed sacramental. An electronic device, while helpful (as I said, I use them too) is not blessed nor a sacramental. Why should you carry a rosary always? I suppose it comes down to whether or not you find value in sacramentals at all. Is there value in wearing a scapular, or a crucifix or a medal? Is it a must? No. Neither is saying a rosary. However, historically Catholics have found value in them. That’s all I’m saying.
Ok. Thanx. 😉

I was thinking that it was ‘bad’ to do a Rosary without having a Rosary in my hand. 😦

But, no, for me, Sacramentals don’t mean that much. I mean, I respect them. I wouldn’t throw them away or let them get soggy and/or dirty (if I could help it), but if I don’t have them, I don’t have to protect them.🙂

I think of all the books I bought for my Kindle only one had text-to-speech. You are right that the publishing houses do not like it.

thanks for the warning. noise isn’t good. i don’t think others and Jesus appreciate that very much.

I have said many rosaries counting on my fingers. The sacramental beads help and may add to the Grace obtained but are not necessary. The prayer is all that matters.

I gotta disagree.

I think the GOOD thing is the OP realizing that what they were doing was something that could be annoying to others, and in an effort to not annoy others, is working to not do what is annoying,. 🙂

While there are things we have to ignore (the sound of a rustling baby, or a person who sneezes, or the sound of a person who walks with some limp or something), there are things which can be avoided. There are other ways to get what is available on the Kindle and NOT make any noise - or come to CAF and ask how to cut the sound.

I think that while there are things to ignore and just deal with, if we are the culprit and can avoid those things, we should do just that!
You’re clearly not getting it…

I feel so sorry for those who come into church before Mass, drop to their knees for prayer and then turn purple with rage because someone might be talking or the music ministry is getting ready. They are depriving themselves of a very special experience because they have never learned to truly focus at a level that allows them to block-out such distractions. Yes I know, the other people shouldn’t be making noise but it far better to control what one can control – namely their own concentration.

Pray that the noise abates while you also pay for the grace necessary to reach that level of focus.

Funny: I put this in my translator and all I got out was: I’m better than you are because you happen to notice things around me.

Just like the women who have husbands who physically and mentally abuse them, and the put up with it and are still married years later, but ridicule their contemporaries who choose to end their marriage. Or people that have children who are drug addicted and stealing and they continue to pay their children’s bills and give them cash in hand, while they insult their contemporaries who evict their children and send them to a rehab.

Let’s face it: not every one has the same tolerance level. Sometimes, it’s ok to be tolerant. Other times, we need to step up and say, ‘there is a problem’ and deal with the problem.

You say ‘people shouldn’t make noise’. Who reminds them? Why should they not make noise if you just stay quiet? And let us not forget: while those who are tolerant are being tolerant and being all ‘holier than thou’, others are saying something. This means that those of you who are being all ‘pius’ don’t even have to deal with it. Others are doing what we are all called to do: Instruct the ignorant. Admonish the sinner’.

I am not able to sit quietly forever and say nothing. I’ve been quiet. I’ve been patient. I’ve been tolerant. Some days, there is no more of that for me. And I will not feel ashamed or accept your ridicule for doing just that. As long as my corrections are tempered with compassion and I remain civil when dealing with others, I have no need to accept your ridicule.

I’ve got a few Catholic reading & prayer apps on my Android phone. Every now and then, when I forget my prayer book, I’ll pull it out at Adoration. I get a few cold stares from others, but the Lord knows what I’m actually doing, and He’s the one I’m there to see, so I don’t fret over it too much.

It goes without saying, however, than any electronic device I carry with me is silenced.

While it may cause someone to give you a second glance, I don’t think that people spend that much time thinking about your actions provided that they don’t cause the interruptions that were feared before you did it. 😛

And before long, they will certainly come to you and say, ‘where can I get one of those’ 👍

My wife … has several theology texts and Bible translations on her iPod touch. 🙂
I take my Kindle with me into the sanctuary nearly everytime I go.
I used a Palm Pilot years ago in adoration for praying the Rosary,
I watched a lady scroll through her** Blackberry** during Mass the other day.
My dh has an iPad and uses it for all kinds of reading, including religious material.
I love my Ignatius pocket size bible with leather cover and zipper,

… I used to use my Palm for the Rosary

I can’t keep up with all of the technologies. Although my adult children do. My son was showing me all of his Catholic pages of prayers, devotions and readings etc on his (I’m not sure what it is called). It took me forever just to get a cell phone. I never heard of a Kindle. A poster on another thread wanted to bring his own incense to Adoration. I thought some Cuckoo was bringing kindling to Adoration. 😃

That’s what Abraham did!🙂
No. That was Isaac.

God said to Abraham “Take your Sony Isaac, your only Sony and go to the land of Motorola…”

Abraham carried the Torch and the ** Sharp RAZR**. Isaac (dressed only in an** i-phod**) carried the Kindle up to the Vista

The androids stayed at the base of the mountain with the donkey, because they were only Ally’s

God sent a Pixi to stay Abraham’s hand

Later, they found some RAM in a Nook tangled in a Blackberry.

All this because Adam and Eve Devour-ed the Apple.

This is all recorded in the notebook of Moses.

When ever a discussion comes up talking about the little things that annoy us I recall this from St Terese of Lisieux.

The practice of charity, as I have said, dear Mother [Mother Agnes, i.e., her sister Pauline, prioress at the time], was not always so sweet for me, and to prove it to you I am going to recount certain little struggles which will certainly make you smile. For a long time at evening meditation, I was placed in front of a Sister who had a strange habit and I think many lights because she rarely used a book during meditation. This is what I noticed: as soon as this Sister arrived, she began making a strange little noise which resembled the noise one would make when rubbing two shells, one against the other. I was the only one to notice it because I had extremely sensitive hearing (too much so at times). Mother, it would be impossible for me to tell you how much this little noise wearied me. I had a great desire to turn my head and stare at the culprit who was very certainly unaware of her “click.” This would be the only way of enlightening her. However, in the bottom of my heart I felt it was much better to suffer this out of love for God and not to cause the Sister any pain. I remained calm, therefore, and tried to unite myself to God and to forget the little noise. Everything was useless. I felt the perspiration inundate me, and I was obliged simply to make a prayer of doing it without annoyance and with peace and joy, at least in the interior of my soul. I tried to love the little noise which was so displeasing; instead of trying not to hear it (impossible), I paid close attention so as to hear it well, as though it were a delightful concert, and my prayer (which was not the Prayer of Quiet) was spent in offering this concert to Jesus.

Had to so some editing:

No. That was Isaac.

God said to Abraham “Take your Sony Isaac, your only Sony and go to the land of Motorola…” So they Sprint-ed off to do His bidding.

Abraham carried the Torch (because it was very hard back then to make one’s own Firefox) and the Sharp RAZR. Isaac (dressed only in an i-phod) carried the Kindle up to the Vista.

The Androids stayed at the base of the mountain with the donkey, because they were only Ally’s

God sent a Pixi to stay Abraham’s Palm

At that, they looked to the Verizon and found some RAM in a Nook tangled in a Blackberry.

All this because Adam and Eve Devour-ed the Apple.

This is all recorded in the notebook of Moses.

(1) That’s why we all need to pray for more.

(2) That’s why you need to pray for some peace. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take appropriate action outside of Mass. What it means is that you learn the ability to block-out what annoys you in situations you are unable to change in real time so that you do not miss or degrade the experience of being in His Presence.

(3) You’re clearly angry. You need to pray for His peace and grace.

It’s very sad to see that some just don’t get it. They go to Mass. They begin their preparatory prayers and unfortunately some come in and begin talking. Instead of re-doubling their focus on their preparation they get distracted and angry. Sometimes they just sit there, focused on how wrong the others are to be talking. Sometimes they leave. Other times they make a scene which is usually not effective. The tragedy is what they miss in the process.

It takes great strength and grace from God to remain focused in prayer. More people should ask for the gift and develop it. That doesn’t preclude taking other appropriate actions outside of the Mass.

Living in New York City, I have many opportunities to reflect on that quote. I try, I do try, oh, how I try to love all those little noises…God only knows how I try…:o

(1) That’s why we all need to pray for more.
Yes. We do all need to pray for more. One of my most intense prayers is that I be graced with more tolerance.

But that doesn’t mean that I should not be bothered by bothersome things, or that I am a bad person because I am bothered by bothersome things.
(2) That’s why you need to pray for some peace. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take appropriate action outside of Mass. What it means is that you learn the ability to block-out what annoys you in situations you are unable to change in real time so that you do not miss or degrade the experience of being in His Presence.
See… this is the kind of thing that aggravates me and gets my hankles up: Who said that I don’t pray for peace? Who said that I haven’t prayed for peace? Is that a fair assessment for you to make of me? Is that nice? But yes, I have prayed for peace. And while I take my actions outside of Mass (there is no point in making every one else uncomfortable), there are some actions that I will take during Mass: the finger to the lips to quiet someone who is talking, holding the hand of the person who is snapping papers, holding the hand of the child who is bouncing around on the pews, talking to people before they start their actions which are disturbing during the time between Masses. 😉

And for many of the actions, I won’t say anything to any one at all. But then, I get grief from others to whom I feel comfortable enough to vent to that I shouldn’t have done whatever I did… even when they don’t know that I did anything.
(3) You’re clearly angry. You need to pray for His peace and grace.
Yes. I’m angry. But now, I’m more angry at someone who accuses me of actions that they don’t have any evidence that I’ve done, and when it comes in a frilly package called ‘I’m so nice’, yes, it’s very aggravating. I’m angry. I don’t even get this upset with the people who make the noises. They don’t know any better. At least, I hope they don’t. And their actions are not directed towards me nor are they any indictment of me or my character. Still, I do continue to pray for peace and grace, as well as for a tamed tongue and the discretion to say something when it may do some good, and to remain silent when it would do no good.
I’m sure you’ve seen this a number of times. I can guarantee that you didn’t see me doing this any of those times.
It takes great strength and grace from God to remain focused in prayer. More people should ask for the gift and develop it. That doesn’t preclude taking other appropriate actions outside of the Mass.
And again, my translator is buzzing with the, ‘I’ve got grace and strength and you don’t, nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah’ stuff. Your comments are very condescending, to be very frank with you.

Just as much as those who may come into church and talk loudly and be distracting and not reverant in the church may be an annoyance, it’s not right to say to those who are not so guilty, ‘you’re the bad guy’.

And no, I’m not waiting on any thing that even resembles an apology. I just ask that you not do to others what you’ve done to me. I’ve prayed for, and been blessed with, a tamed tongue in this situation. Others may not be so kind.🙂
