Some say to stop using the word ‘American’. What’s next?

I had to learn to stop saying “American” to mean USA when I spent 2 years in a grad program with people from 100+ countries, including a number of Central and South Americans.

They consider themselves Americans also
but they aren’t Americans. They are either South, Central, or North Americans. None of the countries in South or Central America have ‘America’ in their name.

I live in the United States of America. That is the name of the country hence, I am an ‘American’. So there is no slight to any other country located on the American continents.

Yes

Just like citizens of the United States of Mexico can call themselves Mexicans.

But that’s silly. Because “Mexico” refers to a very specific country. “America” does not.

Only we from the US could be so full of ourselves to think that the demonym for entire continents should refer only to our own country.

And that’s really the crux of all this. When you’re in an environment where you’re surrounded by an international body of people working together, maybe we should think about that.

Here we go again, we are “Americanos” by our continent. It’s an english problem that the word for people living in the USA is the same as people living in the entire continent (including the USA).

do you suppose that the residents of the United States of Mexico would object if residents of the United States of America began calling themselves ‘United Staters’?

Not when "America’ is in your country’s name. So what should we call citizens of The United States of AMERICA? USAers? how about United Staters? well that wouldn’t work it would upset the citizens of the United States of Mexico.

How about you call them up and tell them that. Have fun!
no need to. If they want to claim to be Americans it’s fine by me. I only have an issue If they object to me calling myself an American then we can have a discussion.

You were not talking about how are you called but about how us are called.

I have heard proposals such as “USA citizen” but, nevertheless, that is not what we were debating.

All this PC and speech codes and thought crime could backfire. Normal people (uh oh I goofed, the article says this phrase isn’t allowed to be said) how about men and women (nope not allowed) how about males and females (not allowed) don’t like to be bossed around by a bunch of control freaks who think they know it all. So they’ll be defiant and use all these banned words even if they would have never thought of using them before.

I feel like if the US ever did decided to change the nationality from ‘American’ to something else, I would prefer ‘Statesmen’ over ‘staters’ or any other option (I’m a woman, and I don’t mind it). 'Statesmen sounds more appealing than “staters”, I guess I kinda like “statesian” too.
Buuuuut that’s just me 😉

I see the shift. Like I said, I have no objection to people calling themselves American. I object to them having an issue with people in the USA calling themselves American. Just because a citizen of the USA calls themselves an American it should not be considered a slight to anyone who resides in the American continents.

Sorry you felt pressured over saying “America” - I would not have stopped. It is the United States of America, and people in a grad program that wish to say they are from America, have to clarify or be misunderstood. I bet they were suggesting a slight insult.

Canadian Americans, who are North Americans no less, are even more annoyed by our co-opting the word American for the United States only.

The point of my being in the program was to learn how to do deals in an international business environment. If calling them “Americans” is going to help me work with them better so we can get good grades in the program and help us all eventually make more money, I’ll happily do it, because it’s easy enough to do. If I wanted to go around making political statements, I’d have taken up poli sci or just marched around the White House with a sign. I don’t see how that grows the pie or increases my bottom line unless I wanted to become Steve Bannon, which I didn’t, so somebody else can deal with that.

If they have a replacement better than USAian or United Statesian I’m all ears.

Statesians?

For states of what?

Statesman could also refer to a political leader or figure. There could be confusion on that along with other people getting offended that the people of the USA are claiming that term for themselves.

I don’t think they do. USAian is too close to USAsian, while United Statesian sounds awkward and somehow brings to my mind United Klansman and United Klans of America. I’ll stick with American.
