Some say to stop using the word ‘American’. What’s next?

Only we from the US could be so full of ourselves to think that the demonym for entire continents should refer only to our own country.
This. Our arrogance at times can be eye roll worthy (says she who is a proud citizen of the US of A) ;).

I guess ‘Colonials’ wouldn’t go down too well in this day and age?

But people from the US do seem to think they have the only right to refer to themselves as American; there is a certain arrogance in this.

Who actually thinks this? Perhaps I’ve missed it, but I haven’t seen it argued on this thread and I haven’t come across this attitude in real life.

I’ve met many a US citizen who feels this way and looking at some of the news coming from the US there are more than a few who still say Obama wasn’t ‘American’.

I had an argument with someone who was convinced that Obama was born in Kenya and therefore was not fit to be President.

I said Obama was born in Hawaii but I was not believed.

But doesn’t that have to do with his father being Kenyan rather than from a different country on the American continents? IMO he was born in Hawaii with is a US state, so there’s no legit argument against his citizenship, just as there wasn’t with John McCain who was born in Panama while he father was in the military.

Good question.

I have not come across any single person who thinks that and I am not young.

No, I think this comes from the conspiracy theory that Obama’s true birthplace was outside the US rendering him unfit to be President since the POTUS must be born in the USA.

Me either. I call myself American because that’s what we’ve always been called since the American Revolution. I’ve lived in two other countries and visited many more and were always called Americans. We were sometimes called something else, but that’s a different issue.
Arrogant? No, I don’t believe so. Maybe some are, but I’ve never seen it.

I call myself British Columbian. Though perhaps I’m offending both the British and the Colombians?

I was hoping that you and @OraLabora would pipe in. If pressed to expand beyond British Columbia, would you call yourself American? Canadian?

And don’t forget Lancaster and York!
Our minor league baseball teams play each other in a series called the War of the Roses every season.
Oh that’s hilarious. Yes, I can’t believe I forgot those two. I pass through Lancaster with the buggies and windmill quite often, and one of my workmates down in Baltimore lived in York and made the long commute every day because he liked York so much. I’ll have to check out this War of the Roses game.
I drove past the windmill just the other day.
Sometimes Lancaster and York play a double header in both stadiums. First game in one, drive down US 30 to the other.

How about we inhabitants of the United States refer to ourselves as The Chosen People?

What an American tragedy are today’s college campuses. How else to explain the necessity for faculty to provide Play Dough, Legos, cry rooms, therapy dogs, coloring books, therapy tents, and the list goes on and on and on. And why you may ask? All of this on account of Trump’s victory. That list above may seem appropriate for kindergartners. But twenty somethings??? What snowflakes!!!

May God help us!

I guess it’s good to balance out the Left wing propaganda that goes for liberal arts courses these days.
