Hi At Trent.Where have you read the Triduum is a Liturgical Season unto itself ? Is there a link in this thread I missed ?
I asked a priest. His answer leads me to believe the Triduum falls during Lent. As far as the conflicting articles and such, I use the 40 days as a tiebreaker, which shows Saturday as the 40th day.
Give me a link, and I’ll check it out.![]()
Here’s a link ( plus excerpt) to the same document Phemie is quoting from. It’s a circular letter published by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments .
*I. Holy Week
- During Holy Week, the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, beginning with his messianic entrance into Je¬rusalem.
The Lenten season lasts until the Thursday of this week. The Easter Triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, is continued through Good Friday with the cel¬ebration of the passion of the Lord and Holy Saturday, to reach its summit in the Easter Vigil, and concludes with Vespers of Easter Sunday.*
Speaking of Phemie’s most recent post…
I can see how ,in any place but in the "land of the midnight sun", this makes perfect sense. First of all, when a precedent is set even if it is based on a legitimate need it opens the door for all sorts of abuses. For example, the sabbath was always considered to begin from sunset and last to the following sunset. This is part of the basis for our Saturday Sabbath Mass celebrations. That’s not what the Church’s own document on how Easter is to be celebrated says.
Paschale Solemnitatis says this:
77…
1**. The meaning of the nocturnal character of the Easter Vigil**
78. “The entire celebration of the Easter Vigil takes place at night. It should not begin before nightfall; it should end before daybreak on Sunday”. (82) This rule is to be taken according to its strictest sense. Reprehensible are those abuses and practices which have crept in in many places in violation of this ruling, whereby the Easter Vigil is celebrated at the time of day that it is customary to celebrate anticipated Sunday Masses. (83)
Those reasons which have been advanced in some quarters for the anticipation of the Easter Vigil, such as lack of public order, are not put forward in connection with Christmas night, nor other gatherings of various kinds.
During the seventeen years I played music for a living (much of it in the downtown night clubs), our gigs often finished on Saturday night (actually early Sunday morning.) The bars closed at 3:00 am. Then, it might take another hour to 45 minutes to break down the gear and get it out to the vehicles and get paid. Sometimes when not touring, we played in clubs outside of town (up to a 2-3 hour drive away).
So it might be plausibly justifiable for one to attend the Saturday Sabbath Mass because they could end up getting home from work at 6:00 or 7:00 am Sunday morning. However , to be candid, I’m pretty sure that there were times I attended the Sabbath Masses more so that I could get more wasted at work later on, and not have to worry at all about getting up Sunday. That definitely isn’t the right reason to go to Mass [at any time of the day or week…:dts:] (see my username
If anyone is wondering, one of the legitimate needs cited for the Sabbath Mass, was to provide an opportunity for someone who was obliged to travel all day Sunday ; to give them the opportunity to fulfill their Sunday obligation.
