Is our culpability for sin dependent on our personality and temperament? I know people raised in the same household but are wildly different. Perhaps I just cannot understand personality. I used to think some people are drama queens but some people for whatever reason are naturally more intense, emotional and sensitive. That is them being authentic. Some people can think very clearly during stressful situations. I want to argue why can’t we all make ourselves even tempered, responsible, thick-skinned. Some people take longer to adapt while others are quick. I used to think it was laziness. This very shy quiet girl is such a capital b when she is drunk. Is that the real her? Why can’t people hold their liquor. I know people who have forgiven their child abusers while some will forever hold resentment. Why can’t we all be ideal? Each of us is flawed.

I get very frustrated with myself for not understanding certain things. I am English person. I am clichéd hopeless romantic and overly sensitive. It is difficult for me to pick apart a situation objectively. Also I have to be withdrawn from a situation to see it for what it is. Sometimes I think we’ll what does my sort contribute to society. I wish I were more well balanced but I notice I will probably always lean closer to the emotional sensitive side than rational.

I don’t know if this will help, but St. Teresa, the Little Flower, sort of dwelt on this.

She saw a field of wild flowers and noticed how very different they were. Some were tall while others were little. Some splashed with color while some were bland. And so on. Then she made the observation that they all give God glory in their own special way in their difference and variety.

Then she applied this to people who are quite different in their own way, but give glory to God too in their own special way.

Wouldn’t it be a boring world if everyone was just a like.

“The seed of glory sown in man will flower when we see your face.” (Hymn)

C.S. Lewis wrote a book about Heaven and Hell called The Great Divorce. It’s fiction, but it has a lot of good stuff in it. One of the things that the book points out is that if we conquer our weaknesses and our most common sins, they will become our glories in Heaven.

For example, in the book there is a man who subdues his longing for sexual sin. When he finally conquers it, his concupiscent tendency suddenly turns into a beautiful heavenly horse which he can ride through the streets of heaven.

(Well, okay, that’s not exactly what happens, but it’s one of those books where you have to read the whole thing to understand what’s going on. So I’m approximating here.)

Being emotional or having volatile feelings can be a grave weakness. But it is also a great strength if applied to understanding other people, or artistic performance, or other kinds of communication needs. The trick is being able to harness an emotional nature, instead of letting it harness us. And it’s not an easy trick; but the older and more experienced one gets, the more one can grapple with it.

A lot of the great saints have had this problem. (Heck, there isn’t a problem that some great saint hasn’t suffered with…) St. Therese of Lisieux struggled with her strong and volatile emotions from her earliest youth, and if you read other stuff than her own autobiography, you find out that so did her whole family. There were also many male saints who were like this. King David certainly was a very emotional guy, and it got him into trouble a lot. And yet, despite all his sins, he was also a man after the Lord’s own heart. Confusing, isn’t it?

So the trick is to persevere and pray for help. It’s also good to do things that strengthen you in being calm and reasoned. I am sure there are other things to do that your priest or a wise friend could tell you.

Emotional, sensitive people often make the best artists, musicians, writers etc. God created some people to be thinkers and others, feelers. There is no ideal type, just an ideal vocation and career for each person.

Any personality type can become productive and holy through the grace of God. Embrace your uniqueness.

Being emotional and sensitive is not a sin.

Being resentful is.

We each have our crosses to bear. An emotional and sensitive person has to struggle to forgive where a tougher person may let things slide easily. The tougher person, however, has other crosses that he must work on.

I used to be a person who always responded sharply. Now I try to not respond and to say a prayer for the other person. (Not that I always manage ;))

I am not sure how resentful I am or grudgeful. I have a difficult time letting things go especially if I am still in the situation.

True. A white lily will never be a red rose. Roses like people are sought after more. That is a beautiful way to see the world.

Tougher people can be too rough or callous when dealing with others. I know a kind person who a lot of people dislike brutal honesty is way more brutal than honest. She has cultivated a group of haters - no one likes be yelled at, treated harshly. Men are less sensitive than women they hate her too. She does not seem to notice or care how rude and dismissive she is of others. No problem delivering snide or sarcastic remarks she kind of does those things without really thinking. Her depths of cruelty is scary if you cross her. I guess her way of relieving stress through snide remarks.

Me too. I still have people on my spit list from the third grade.

Lol. Not that resentful. I try my hardest to forget. I have to forgive and forget. If I remember, old feelings are sure to reemerge. I guess i should just realize no one is perfect anyways but work on myself. Life is so short. This young man I knew died today. Was in an accident early morning yesterday. I guess it is true you do not know the time or the hour.

I cannot forget and I cannot let go. People ask me why I carry so much anger in my heart and I joking say it’s because I am running out of places to keep it. 😃

For example I had a supervisor at a job back in the 1980s. He was a jerk (I could use a stronger word but I’d get banned) and absolutely hated the guy. After I had left and moved on I later learned that he spent a year in jail for molesting his 13-year old stepdaughter. So yeah, he really was a jerk.

Earlier this year I saw that he had died. Finally, I was able to let go.

Gees. What a jerk. Write a letter to yourself or write a journal cursing them out. i am not sure if this is a sin.

I wonder about these things, too. It seems like we’re called to abide by the same set of rules as if we’re all the same person.

“Thou shall not eat liver,” isn’t a problem if everyone hates liver. But there are people out there, and I’ve never met one, who like liver.

Dude, that is exactly what I am trying to say. Lust is going to be a problem for men -higher sex drive. Vanity for women - a lot of what attracts a man to woman is her youth, beauty and fertility. Some people seem to not be as deeply wounded by sin. I guess all these degrees really do not matter. Sin is sin whether you are traumatized by it or not. Whether you face the consequences now or in the next life. I think death is end honestly.

Letting things go is the opposite of holding a grudge or being resentful 😉

However, in an ongoing situation, one might forgive but still be on one’s guard. Forgiveness does not mean one has to become BFFs! Be realistic, but pray for the person.

I am not particularly angry at anyone. Maybe bitter? I just keep wishing things were different. I guess I am grudgeful/resentful.

It fascinates me how vastly different people’s life experiences are. I guess I hold reason and logic the highest value. I think people would be faultless if they were more logical. Honestly the Bible helps me remember that we cannot make ourselves perfect. Some people appear more or less perfect than others. I react very strongly emotionally, I am not being a drama queen I just feel things very strongly. I like it sometimes but I can make a mountain out of a molehill. Feelings cannot be trusted. As for being more logical, I am not sure how I see fault other than it hinders you from understanding the supernatural, if you believe that stuff.

My therapist suggested this “write a letter” thing. Ive tried and it hasn’t really help. Besides, I’d have to murder a whole forest to write all the letters I’d need to write. And yes, I’m a jerk. I’d use a stronger word but I’d get banned.

I did not say you were a jerk. Somethings take longer than others to fully forgive. The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I guess this is truly between yourself and the Lord. I do not want to pretend to know why it may be difficult for you to let things go. I am similar. I do not actually knowing what vices people struggle with, it opens the gate for pride.
