I have been crying all evening. For the past ten years, I have been experiencing excruciating pain in my feet; it’s pain that I cannot even begin to describe, and it has only gotten worse over the years. I have been to doctor after doctor and no one can tell me what is wrong. Recently, it was explained to me that I simply have chronic pain, and I might have to live with it for the rest of my life. I am a ninteen year old girl, and quite frankly, that is a terrifying prospect.

I used to be a fit ballet dancer, but when the pain started, I was forced to quit my passion and as a result of inactivity, I gained a ton of weight. However, last year, I decided that I needed to do something about my health, and began working out. In six months, I lost sixty pounds, forcing myself to work through the pain.

I recently ordered Shaun T’s Insanity Workout. I am eight days in, and the pain in my feet is back with a vengeance. It has begun to radiate from my feet to my calves. I realize that when you exercise you are supposed to “feel the burn,” but this goes way beyond ordinary pain that one gets from exertion.

I am desperate to lose more weight, but the pain is so bad I can barely walk right now. Everything feels inflamed. I already hate almost everything about myself; I do not attract men, because nowadays, it seems that they are only attracted to the skinny Hollywood image. I am not obese, but I am chunky and still need to take off some weight. So that can be a downer when I let myself think about it. But while that is an issue for me, nothing bothers me more than the fact that I might not be able to do what is required of me in my future career. I am going into law enforcement, and need to be in tip top physical condition. But if I cannot run…what on earth am I going to do? Family and friends try to tell me to “just go into a different area of criminal justice” and “do something that requires less physical exertion.”

No. I have never seen myself doing anything else, nor do I love anything as much as I do criminal justice. My mind is set, I just need prayer to get to my goal. Sometimes I feel as if God does not hear me…and that he doesn’t care about me. It sure seems like that sometimes. I do not want money, or fame, or anything like that…I just want my pain to not be so severe anymore. For once, I would like to get through a workout without feeling nauseous, and as if I am going to pass out from the constant burning in my feet.

Please remember me in your prayers if you can. This week has been a constant struggle for me, and I do not know how much more I can take. If you have any advice, I’d greatly appreciate it. But prayers are more important to me than anything else.

Thank you for listening.

Go and get checked out by a Dr… For some reason I’m thinking that diabetes damages nerves in the feet. I do know the pain you describe…it stinks. I got cancer when I was 32, 10 years ago. The nerve damage in my feet and hands was pretty bad. I had such strong feet being a blue collar worker always wearing boots at work and as an infantry soldier. They turned to mush after the months of chemo…it took a long time before I could wear boots again and even this long after they hurt when I work out…get a foot soaker and soak them puppies in epsom salt water. Don’t get discouraged. Tim

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles! I have actually been tested for diabetes and I am fine. Actually, all of my bloodwork has come out normal so far, thank God. It truly is a mystery. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia three years ago, but doctors do not believe that that is the root of the problem in my feet.

thank you… It ok now, just another mountain life puts in our trail. Definitely soak them in hot salt water and see how that works for you. Tim

Can you take up swimming as exercise while you figure out where the pain is coming from? Your feet will flex from kicking but there will not be the impact you’ve been experiencing from running or other high impact exercising.

If the pain subsides while swimming you could make the argument that the pain was related to the high impact.

I know we’re not supposed to offer medical advice here but I would like to add that the most recent theory around things like fibromyalgia is that it is an immunological disorder. Have you tried various elimination diets to see if you have a food sensitivity that could be causing the immune system to flare up? At any rate go and do some research and find a good doctor who will listen to you.

I would be curious whether there is a connection between your ballet history and foot problems? If it’s radiating up your legs, it sounds like nerve damage.

At 19 you should not concede to living with chronic pain for the rest of your life. You should see a specialist, maybe someone specializing in sports injuries. Fibromyalgia is a cop-out diagnosis, and one usually given when a doctor can’t identify another cause.

I had a health issue for almost two years that doctor after doctor couldn’t help me with. I was tired of hearing guesses and having doctors prescribe medications and treatments, on the off-chance that it might possibly work. I ended up calling the office of the head of the medical department of my issue, at an “Ivy League” hospital, and he gave me an appointment. In a 20 minute visit he correctly diagnosed me. There is hope - you just have to keep advocating for yourself.

I don’t think the police officers I see around town are doing a lot of running. Don’t worry about that. You just need to be fit enough to get on the force.

I also have weight issues and I’m working on foot issues of my own. It’s different from your situation because I have an extra bone near my ankle. I am about to get some expensive custom-made orthotics that I hope will fix my pain. In the meantime, I wear a pedometer and I try to be moderate about how many steps I take. About 10,000 a day seems OK. Much more than that, and I get pain that radiates up to my knee. It’s a pity, too, because some of my reading suggests that 12,000-15,000 steps is needed for real weight loss, and walking fits very well with my lifestyle. I guess my foot and knee didn’t get the memo.

I encourage you to be more moderate about your exercise. You could do permanent damage if you’re not careful, which would end any hope of a career with the police. Have you seen a podiatrist or a specialist in sports medicine? At my last visit, my podiatrist suggested the following four options to decrease the impact on my foot and knee: 1) swimming 2) stationary bike 3) bike and 4) elliptical machine.

According to your post you are nineteen and have been experiencing severe pain in your feet for ten years. That means the problem started when you were nine. You have been suffering way too long.

In tough cases like this it is reasonable to ask your doctor for a referral to a teaching hospital (e.g. Duke University Medical Center, Vanderbilt University, UCLA Medical Center, etc.) for diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

Over the years my experience has been if the local doctors can’t render an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan after three visits with tests they are not going to be able to help and should refer you to someone that can.

Congratulations on dropping the weight. It can only help.

I also have foot pain. It’s manageable with pain meds. I was told it was Diabetic neuropathy two years before I was diagnosed with Diabeties. Get to a foot doctor and see what they can do. And don’t be shy about it. These are your feet, they need to be taken care of.

Not all men are so fickle. I’m not and I know many other men who are likewise. The ones who are aren’t worth your time.

You can do a LOT in law enforcement without having to physically be able to chase a bad guy. Forensics comes to mind. Obviously, you can go to law school without having to be able to catch a felon.

Everyone has gone through that. He DOES care and He DOES love you, it’s just hard to see His love in this valley of tears sometimes.

It’s chronic pain, so the cause also could be chronic. Have you asked your doctor to do a vitamin panel–particularly vitamin D?

I’ll pray for you.

I’m a retired professional ballet dancer. My feet are the reason they have those signs in restaurants–“no shoes, no service.” I don’t do pedicures, that would be like putting a Victorian paint job on an outhouse. And only a deranged person would like to look at my feet.

You’re losing weight, which is good. Get a really good podiatrist. Low impact aerobic activity. Don’t buy cheap, unsupportive, or extreme high heel shoes. Get a couple of pairs of lace up oxfords (they’re the most supportive,) and consider getting custom orthotics.

To strengthen your feet again, consider doing some releves and tendus at home, using your kitchen counter as a barre. Really pointe through.

I pretty much live in running shoes (not sneakers, actual running shoes) most of the time nowadays.

Blessed Mother Mary…we need you to be lovedance4ever’s Mother…right now…she is in great need right now…and your Blessed intercession is great and powerful. Amen.

He does care. But I think you need to be open to the possibility that He has other ideas for you. You say your mind is set. One should not approach God in such a manner. Pray for His will in your life, not your own will.

Anyway, I hope you can sort out your feet. Ballet can be brutal on feet. I hope you can find some explanation, treatment, and relief.

“Don’t buy cheap, unsupportive, or extreme high heel shoes.”

That’s another thing–a podiatrist will give you a long list of good and bad shoes and what to look for in footwear.

Doctors usually hate flip-flops, by the way.

Let me share with you something I have learned in my spiritual journey and that is there is value in suffering. Let me explain, no one enjoys pain and my heart is so sad that at such a very young age you must experience such a great deal of it, but if we must suffer, use it for good. Offer it to our Lord, say to him “Heavenly Father, I accept my suffering this day for love of you! I lay my pain at the foot of your cross in reparation for sins committed against you and for the poor souls in purgatory.” Every soul that is released from purgatory by your good works is a soul in heaven that will pray for you always. (It’s good to have friends in high places :)!).

I am sorry you are struggling with so much pain- I have a chronic pain disease as well and it is certainly hard.

I would definitely give up the Insanity. It’s too extreme for someone who has pain issues without it. Experiment with different workouts that do not impact your feet so much. Someone recommended swimming, which is a good idea. A personal trainer might have some more ideas.

Regarding your career- I do not know what kind of physical requirements you will need to meet but if I were you I would find out before you continue on this path. It may be the case that you’d be alright, and it may be the case that you wouldn’t be able to do it. I had to give up a career that I loved because of my condition and it saddens me still, but it does happen. Saying “no” only goes so far- instead, take steps to see whether your career might be feasible, and if it won’t, pray for the grace to accept it and ask God what He wants of you. I’ll be praying for you, I hope that you can find some relief for your pain.

Living with pain is rotten–I know. But even worse than pain itself is pain’s good friends, Fear and Despair. “I’m afraid I’ll never have a complete life because of my limitations”–“I’ll never feel better. The doctors will never be able to help me”–and other such thoughts can harm you even more than can the pain itself.

So, as other people have commented, bring your trouble to God, and always rest assured that He will not give you more than you can bear, and He will be with you to sustain you. Even when you’re feeling horrible, give thanks to God for His mercies to you; I say, from personal experience, that this will give you light and hope and comfort.

Finally, be sure to surround yourself with loving family, friends, and church members. Don’t feel that they will be “tired” of your problems; reach out to them, and they will lift you up. It is a joy to others, especially others in the Christian community, to support those who need it. Blessings.

Consider low impact exercises approved by your doctor / physical therapist. If you are having pain, pushing yourself in exercises that cause pain while not getting attention is dangerous.

Learn about nutrition. In 5 minutes of bad eating you can eat more than 5 hours of exercise can burn off.

Listen to your body. If your body is telling you no, listen.

I am not sure why, but we can all get into these mental ruts where we push ourselves in forms of exercise that are bad for us. For example, sometimes people have joint replacements who were former runners. They are told not to run, and they still do it and destroy the joint. If they had just walked, swam, biked, or other exercises approved by their doctor / physical therapist, then they would have been fine.

I have not done Insanity or P90, but I would say that looking at these sort of workouts for the principles, may be more important than the actual exercises. For example, I am particularly interested in the idea of “muscle confusion”. The guys that wrote p90 noted that the body habituates if we do the same thing every day. So for myself, I am trying to incorporate this principle by alternating low impact exercises instead of the high impact exercises in the workouts. Body builders also know a lot about nutrition. We can learn from them without doing the heavy weights that can hurt you. All my strength work now is bands.

I am in a similar situation in that I started a new sport that is causing me a lot of pain. I may have to give it up and do something else even though I love the sport.

It is also getting me down. I am going to get myself checked out.

So I am not sure of the reason, but sometimes we mentally picture ourselves as doing / being something. Then we push ourselves in the wrong direction when we could have gotten to our destination by a safer / healthier, route.

So I would say also to stay close to God and hope for His guidance in choosing the right professionals.

Good luck.
