Songs with awesome guitar solos--ideas for my dd?

***Just wondering, especially for those of you who play guitar…any ideas as to good songs for a 12 yr old to learn, with great solos?

My dd is really developing as a guitarist…so proud of her. 🙂 She is trying to tackle Freebird, right now, but it’s pretty hard, she said. She’s got some parts down, but just curious if you all might have any ideas as to songs that have decent solos (challenging) that don’t have bad words/lyrics throughout? She loves Holiday by Greenday, but there are some interesting lyrics throughout…she needs to come up with a new one for her next concert, which is rolling around in a few weeks. (her teacher does the singing)

She loves Bullet for My Valentine, but again…not appropriate – I do let her listen to these songs…if the words are censored. (swear words) She listens for the guitar solos.

So…please, we could use your help! I told her Journey, but she told me it’s too ‘old school.’ 😊😊 :rolleyes:

I’ll get more names when DS gets home, but, there are many great guitarists out there - there is more to being a great guitar player than solos 😃

Buckethead is an amazing musician. While he does work with other musicians, bands and singers, his solo stuff is all instrumental. The man is an artist.

Go to the blues greats, BB King, Buddy Guy. Learn the skills from the ground up, then there will be NOTHING she cannot play.

There is a Gypsy guitar player that is a must listen to for asipring guitar players, Django Reinhardt.

For learning intricate things that are a real challange for the guitar, DS likes the violin work of Pagininni.
 
For her next show? Hendrix “Little Wing” or Prince “Purple Rain”.

Hey, I hadn’t thought of Buckethead…you are right, AMAZING artist, iindeed. :bowdown: Please ask your son…thanks for these tips for right now, kage. 😉 tell her that about being solos, but…her teacher is trying to showcase the different skills each of his students has in these monthly concerts. I love the tune, Sleepwalk…know it? It is very slow, but the guitar is …just awesome…dd said…‘too slow, mom.’ Have you heard of Impulse? Great musicians, but their songs give me a headache. 😛

***She thinks Hendrix is ‘pretty cool,’ I told her the National Anthem by him is just breakthtaking…I think so. There are sooo many talented people out there…the rub is that her teacher has to be able to sing these songs, too…if it’s too contemporary, he struggles with keeping up with the tempo…he is about 60, and an AWESOME teacher…we just love him. He knows a lot of what kids are listening to, but singing them is challenging. ***
 
I’ve been playing for## years.Played Lead guitar in several southern rock bands and and taught guitar at Holy Trinity School.I would encourage any guitarist to “get their feel happening”.Listen and play along with Stevie ray Vaughn,Skynard,Allman Brothers,Molly Hatchet,Eric Clapton,BB King.Gary Moore is Awesome.Go to youtube and check out Gary Moore playing Messiah Will Come.While you’re their,check out Eric Clapton’s Holy Mother,Molly Hatchets "fall of the Peacemakers.You stated she is working on Freebird,Does she use a slide?This is a "must"for Freebird.One of the best slide players around is Derek Trucks.He is in his early 20’s and is awesome.Check out Teresa Russell(bluesrock),Just Google her name.Hope this helps.Rocky.
 
***Oh thank you, ward!!! Exactly what I was looking for. DD will be busy. I have eclectic music tastes and dd is expanding her horizons…🙂

My dh told her Stevie Ray Vaughn, I have a few cd’s of his, actually…she said that it looks too hard to learn quickly, there are going to be songs that take lots of time to grasp. I took piano lessons for years…and still play, although rusty. It took me a long time to master the nuances of Claire De Lune, for example…kids nowadays want everything instantly. I’m so glad she took up guitar, it teaches her patience.👍

PS–How long did it take you to master Freebird, assuming you know how to play that?***
 
Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead or Alive is one of my favorites. And anything by Aerosmith (Joe Perry is amazing with the guitar, and the music is so well written). The lyrics of some of their songs may be questionable for your tastes, though, so I would suggest looking them up before letting her select those songs.
 
I allow a lot of things to be listened to, all in the name of becoming a better guitar player, but I draw the line at vile lyrics, or ones that depict women, or our country in a bad light.

Hm, well I’ve had the guitar solo from Owner of a Lonely Heart by Yes stuck in my head for the past week. But you need a pitch transposer to add a fifth to your notes to play it. And it’s pretty “old school” too. 😛

And your daughter actually has the patience to learn solos note by note? Good for her! I usually only bother if the solo is so well known that it would be just stupid not to play it right. And if it’s short. :o

Does she ever try improvising? If she does, do you guys own a piano or a keyboard? I found that knowing the basics of playing the piano was really helpful with learning to play the guitar; it’s useful to see how the intervals and chords compare. I’ve taken piano lessons but not guitar lessons, and I’m much more proficient at the guitar than the piano!
 
Albatross by Corrosion of Conformity is another good one nice slow song with some good guitar solos for a beginner.

Wow, your twelve year old daughter can play solos similar to “bullet for my valentine?” wow! bows 🙂

I play guitar too, well, not so much lately. But see if she’d like to learn “powerslave” by Iron Maiden, one of the funnest solos to play 😃

Though that too might be “old school” 🙂

***I am in awe of her, myself.:o Her teacher is AMAZING. Really. We are so glad we found him…she started off with a good teacher, but he had some family issues, wasn’t focused…so I started looking around, and lo and behold a music shoppe opened up right by us…we were so happy. He taught her that finger tapping which is so prevalent in Bullet for my Valentine music…I don’t dislike their music, that throaty screaming…bleck.😊 lol But, there is definitely raw talent here. Is it wrong to say I’m so proud of her??? :o

Yeah I’m not big into the “singer” of Bullet for my Valentine, in fact I hate the cookie monster voices 🙂

She has tapping down? Cool! And you say she plays concerts? Even better. Rarely do I ever see female guitarists, at least around here. I thought they didn’t exist, then came across two that blew me out of the water, my own gutiar playing that is, and I’ve been playing for years, but those ladies owned me :o I’m so glad they’re out there!

iron madien has the funnest songs to play I think, there’s so much going on with the bass lines, the lead and all the dozens of guitar harmonies it’s awesome. Not to mention bruce Dickonson is a great singer!
 
*****She has such a big heart, too. She just loves the Lord, and she thanks Him for the talent He’s blessed her with…it’s so sweet, she prays before her concerts. When I say concert, it is at the music shoppe, and in front of parents, but he has a lot of walkers-by who stop in, and pull up a seat to listen…she is not nervous at all…I used to be very nervous. She was a “beginner” for maybe…a minute? 😃 I told her she can be anything she chooses…if she wants to have a band, go for it. I hardly see female guitarists too…

So, can you play Freebird? I just think that is a fun song, I will cry when she gets that solo down. :o*

You are very welcome.When Freebird came out,it was’nt that popular,but because of Skynard’s "live"versions with extended solo’s,everyone requested the song.I was playing in nightclubs,bars etc.(would’nt recommend that).I had to learn it quickly.Great song and fun to play.You are doing the right thing in "filtering"what your daughter listens to.My son(guitarist and drummer)listens to Demon Hunter,a very Heavy Christian band.Matt Mayer is a very good Catholic artist.Good luck and may our Lord Bless and watch over your family.Rocky.
 
Oh yeah, I don’t know if this is too old school for your daughter, but I recommend any of Chicago’s first nine albums for lots of lengthy and technical guitar solos. Terry Kath plays plenty of amazing solos on them (South California Purples, 25 or 6 to 4, etc). I think he was one of the reasons I started learning guitar. Never actually completely learned any of his solos though. 😛
